Elements is a New American fine dining restaurant formerly located in Princeton, New Jersey on Bayard Lane. The restaurant opened in 2008 and closed in 2014, while a new location was developed in downtown Princeton on Witherspoon St.[1][2]
Development
Founder and owner, Steven Distler,[3] a semiretired private-equity executive of Bank of Princeton, purchased and renovated the property from an auto-repair garage next to a gas station.
Distler hired executive chef Scott Anderson, a Caldwell native and Rutgers graduate. Anderson, was a former associate of restaurant Nova Terra in New Brunswick. He has never been formally trained, but spent six years at the Ryland Inn, where he became the head chef before the restaurant closed. He was introduced to Distler by business partner, Laurent Chapuis, owner of the Princeton Corkscrew Wine Shop. Anderson is currently an equity partner in the restaurant.[4][5]
In 2013, Anderson and Distler, opened Japanese themed restaurant, Mistral, in Princeton.[6]
Elements closed at its first location in Princeton after dinner service on June 28, 2014. It will reopen in the building that currently houses Mistral in early 2015. Mistral will remain open during the renovations. Both locations will share the liquor license upon reopening. [7]
Menu
Elements had a seasonally changing menu and served an array of different cuisines ranging from chicken liver pâté to Pittstown styled corn meal to Laughing Bird shrimp. Elements offered multiple brands of wine with bottle prices ranging from $26 to $2,700.[5]
Ratings
In 2009, Elements was named best restaurant in New Jersey for its unique taste, imagination, and work ethic.[4] Wine Spectator praised Anderson's Spaghetti Carbonara in 2010.[8]
In 2012, Elements was voted best brunch and lunch in the 29th Annual Jersey Choice Restaurant Poll[9] and was ranked the 35th best restaurant in the United States by Forbes.[10]
In 2013, NJ Monthly named Elements as a Top 25 restaurant praising Scott Anderson for his revival of artisanal techniques of preserving food.[11]
Scott Anderson was a semi-finalist contender in the 2014 James Beard Chef Award for best Mid-Atlantic chefs.[12]
