Flip or Flop is a television series airing on HGTV hosted by real estate agents and real life husband and wife, Tarek El Moussa (born August 21, 1981) and Christina El Moussa (born July 9, 1983).[1]
Premise
The El Moussas were both Real Estate agents prior to the real estate crash in 2008, and began flipping homes.[2] Most of the properties are located in Orange County, California.[3]
One day in 2011, Tarek asked a friend to help him make an audition tape for HGTV. The friend filmed an entire episode of the process of house flipping from start to finish. The audition tape was sent to HGTV and they were interested in talking to the couple. In 2012, HGTV signed the couple to a regular weekly program that shows the process of buying distressed property and renovating it.[4] In an interview for Variety Magazine, Christina said "each episode shows things that can go wrong, and do go wrong".[5]
Christina’s real estate expertise is primarily in design and she works with Tarek to find and renovate homes. She handles the designs of the new spaces and keeps everything on schedule.
The show follows them as they buy homes, typically bank-owned, short sales, or foreclosures to renovate and resell.[6]

Personal Life
Christina was born in Anaheim and grew up in Anaheim Hills, CA.[7] She went to school in southern California and began working in the real estate industry right after college, where she met her husband, Tarek. Tarek El Moussa earned his real estate license at twenty-one years of age.[8]
Tarek and Christina were married in 2009 and currently live in Yorba Linda, California. They have a daughter named Taylor and son named Brayden.[9]
Tarek and Christina were selling real estate and were selling millions of dollars worth of upscale homes in the southern California area.[10] When the housing market plummeted after the October 2008 stock market crash, they went from living in a $6,000 per month home to a $700 per month apartment.
Tarek was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2013 when a viewer of the TV show noticed a lump on his thyroid gland and wrote in to say that he should have it checked. After testing, the doctors found that the lump was cancerous and he was scheduled for immediate surgery.[11]
Real Estate Career
Today the couple runs a real-estate agency, called Tarek and Christina: The El Moussa Group, in Orange County, CA, an area with one of the largest foreclosure rates in the country.[12] Tarek, Christina and their business partner, Pete De Best, bought their first investment house in Santa Ana for $115,000. After selling the property for a profit of $34,000, the trio split the money and have continued to flip houses, expanding their real estate investing business into Arizona and Nevada.[13]
Real Estate Training Workshops
The couple leads Success Path Education, a real estate investment seminar series held at locations across North America for aspiring investors.[14] During these workshops, the couple explains the entire process of house flipping to potential investors. They try to help new investors avoid common mistakes when flipping houses.
Today the couple has successfully flipped hundreds of homes, and with each deal they have refined their house-flipping system and broken it down into a series of repeatable steps. Their system helps to maximize profits, reduce expensive mistakes and get the best overall profits from every deal.
Since Tarek and Christina started coaching a few years ago, Success Path has become one of the most popular real estate training workshops in North America.[15]
