Samuel Moore

Samuel Moore UEL was born on 4 Apr 1742 in Rahway, NJ, died on 19 Sep 1822 in Norwich, ON at age 80, and was the first person to be buried in Norwich Pioneer Cemetery, Norwich, ON.

Samuel was the son of Samuel Moore, grandson of Captain John Moore, and great-grandson of the Honourable Samuel Moore, Treasurer of East Jersey.

Samuel married Rachel Stone. Rachel was born on 21 Sep 1743 in Elizabethtown, NJ and died on 7 Dec 1813 in Elizabethtown, NJ at age 70.

As a Quaker, he could not take the Oath of Allegiance during the American Revolution and was run off his land by the Colonial forces. He was resettled with other English Loyalists, about 1784, in Wilmot Township, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, (now a province of Canada). He eventually held about 1500 acres there.

In 1810, he started a move to Upper Canada, via a return visit to New Jersey. He eventually settled in Upper Canada (southern Ontario). It is reported that Samuel accumulated approximately 2000 acres in Upper Canada. Land records show that between between 1811 and 1815,he owned the 200 acre lot consisting of lot 21, 2nd Concession Charlotteville, Ontario.
