The Year of the Hangman is an alternate history novel for young adults, published in 2002 and written by Gary Blackwood.
Changes in History
one of the key differences is that, during a battle in which Washington tried to fight against the british head on, washington was captured, and put on trial. This change affected the war and different characters greatly. For instance Benedict Arnold never had a chance to betray the country, and is one of the main hero's in this book.
Plot
The rebels are losing the revolution. With George Washington dead, their leaders are struggling. Creighton Brown is the son of a British hero who was killed in battle. After losing all his money gambling, his mother, in last resort, sends him to America to live with his uncle, a tough General named Gower. But he is captured by American rebels. He is taken in by Benjamin Franklin, who befriends him and gives him a job in his printing shop, where Franklin is relaying messages through his newspaper. But now his uncle expects him to spy on the rebels. Creighton has to choose between his friends in the Americas or the British.
