History

Opened in November 1992 as the first suburban mall (Northpoint Shopping Centre, Chinese: 纳福坊) in northern Singapore, it received a lot of publicity. As this is the first mall, it marked the first time some of these departmental stores or shops venturing to the heartlands of Singapore. Shops or brand name like Cold Storage, John Little, Swensen's, Giordano, Guardian, Photo Finish, Mark and Spencer's and Toys R Us opened their first outlet in the heartland.

In 2001, Northpoint underwent a refurbishment programme which saw the interior flooring and signage being replaced.

In 2002, a 2-storey annex housing small eateries and retail outlets was opened on the site adjacent to the bus interchange. The annex was closed in 2007 to facilitate the construction of the new extension of Northpoint.

The new extension was completed in November 2008, which saw an net increase in floor area and a new retail concepts. The Yishun Public Library was incorporated into this extension. The overall number of tenants was increased by half.

In 2015, the Yishun Bus Interchange was demolished to make way for a new building, which will incorporate an extension of Northpoint Shopping Centre, the air-conditioned Yishun Bus Interchange and the Nee Soon Central Community Club, which will be the first of its kind in Singapore. On the top of the new building will be a 920 unit condominium called North Park Residences. They are expected to be completed in phases from 2017 to 2019.

In July 2017, Northpoint Shopping Centre was officially renamed to Northpoint City which its existing shopping centre will be renamed as its North Wing while the new extension will be named as South Wing.

The south wing of the mall was opened in December 2017, increasing the number of tenants to 500 and bringing new and exciting concepts, such as high street fashion and more food choices, including gourmet street Makan Town. Anchor tenants include a Harvey Norman superstore, Uniqlo, Anytime Fitness and Halal food court Bagus. A sunken garden at Basement 1 connects the two wings together.
