When applied to fabric, the term sheer refers to semi-transparent and flimsy cloth.

It is usually a very thin knit and is used to make tights, leggings and stockings. It is also used for effect in dancewear and lingerie. File:MS10064.jpg When applied to ship design, sheer refers to an upward curve in the deck toward either end.
