Mentioning athletic conference in the lead of an article about a university

The lead is 3 sentences long. Do we really think that the athletic conference that a university belongs to is 1/3 of that university's identity? On the Colgate Raiders article, sure. But not on the main article about the university. I realize that some sports fans think colleges exist solely for providing college sports entertainment to the masses, but believe it or not, their mission is actually education.
