Romoty [rɔˈmɔtɨ] (Template:Lang-de) is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Kalinowo, within Ełk County, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in northern Poland.[1] It lies approximately 9 kilometres (6 mi) south of Kalinowo, 21 km (13 mi) east of Ełk, and 143 km (89 mi) east of the regional capital Olsztyn.
Before 1945 the area was part of Germany (East Prussia).
History
The village Romotten was built around 1500. It belonged to the possession of the ancient noble family Gutowski, originating from northern Mazovia. The name Romotten is of Prussian origin and refers to a sanctuary of the once-based Baltic tribe, as pagan worship was held outdoors, in forests and on heathens (roms, rams: silent, quiet, devout).
