Honda Canada Inc. is the Canadian division of the Honda Motor Company. Founded in 1969, Honda has been building cars in Canada since 1986 in Alliston, Ontario and head office in Markham, Ontario. Since 1964, Honda has been committed to lessening the environmental impact of their business. [1]
Manufacturing
In 1986, Honda opened a manufacturing plant in Alliston, Ontario in an effort to build vehicles locally. Since then, Honda opened a second plant in 1998, and an engine plant in 2008.
Honda is the most popular automobile manufacturer in Southern Ontario, and second most in Canada behind General Motors Canada.
Honda fully expresses their environmental policy through their manufacturing plants, sending zero production waste to landfills.[2]
Environment
Since 1964, Honda has been committed to lessening the environmental impact of their business. The Blue Skies for our Children initiative represents Honda’s vision that future generations can experience freedom and mobility without sacrificing environmental sustainability.[3]
Honda Canada has been partnered with Forest Recovery Canada since 2013 to plant over 160,000 trees across the country.[4] Through the launch of hybrid and electric models, Honda is seeking to have electric vehicles make up two thirds of its global sales by the year 2030.
Community
Honda founded the Honda Canada Foundation in 2005 in an effort to support other Canadian registered non-profits in the areas of family, environment, engineering, and education. [5]
In 2017, they supported more than 15 charities and support programs, spent over 2,700 combined hours of volunteer time across Canada, and more than 450 Honda associates volunteered in their communities. [6]
Safety
Honda strives to achieve safety for everyone, regardless of cost and vehicle type. To achieve this goal, Honda created its Honda Sensing® and AcuraWatchTM technologies, which assist in vehicle safety and collision mitigation through a network of sensing technologies.
Through the use of these technologies, such as the Lane Keeping Assist System, Collision Mitigation Braking SystemTM, and other safety features, Honda seeks to contribute to a collision-free society by 2040. [7]
Mobility
Honda sees robotics as an integral part in reaching their full potential. As a result, Honda created a line of experimental technologies designed to empower humans and enhance the way they move.[8]
Honda’s line of experimental technologies includes several personal mobility devices designed to remove mobility barriers for humans, as well as ASIMO, The World’s Most Advanced Humanoid Robot.
Corporate Head Office
Honda Canada Inc. had purchased land in Richmond Hill, Ontario with intent to build a new corporate headquarters there. When infrastructure disagreements with the municipal government could not be resolved, plans to move to Richmond Hill were scrapped and subsequently were solidified in Markham at 180 Honda Boulevard.
The new facility is a LEEDs showcase building.
Honda Canada Finance Inc. (HCFI), o/a Honda Financial Services, was established in 1987 to provide financing and leasing options for Canadian consumers.
Honda Canada Inc. supports a network of 237 Honda and 51 Acura authorized automotive dealers in Canada.
There are also over 600 dealers for Honda motorcycle and power equipment products. These dealers sell motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, snowblowers, lawnmowers and other equipment in Canada.
Sales
Motorcycles were the first Honda products sold and it was not until 1973 that cars were sold in Canada.
The first zone office was established in Montreal, Quebec in 1972, and a regional office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The next in Richmond, British Columbia in 1984. The first car dealership was opened by German entrepreneur Siegfried Bauer in downtown Montreal (Honda de Sigi -7702) followed by a second dealership in Laval (7703). An advance technical training centre was opened in Boucherville, Quebec in 1991 and 15,000 square metres of space for the third new Quebec zone office.
