BTS (Korean방탄소년단; RRBangtan Sonyeondan), also known as the Bangtan Boys and Beyond the Scene, is a seven-member South Korean boy band formed by Big Hit Entertainment in 2013. The group consists of RM (rapper and leader), Jin (vocalist), Suga (rapper), J-Hope (rapper), Jimin (vocalist), V (vocalist), and Jungkook (vocalist). The band won several New Artist of the Year awards for their track "No More Dream" and gained prominence with their albums The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 (2015) and The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever (2016), both charting on the US Billboard 200. In 2018 to 2019, BTS topped the US Billboard 200 chart three times with their albums Love Yourself: Tear, Love Yourself: Answer, and Map of the Soul: Persona, making them one of the groups to have three number one albums in less than a year. The last group that managed the same feat was The Beatles in 1995 to 1996. The band has been named by various media outlets as "the biggest boy-band in the world".[3][4]

Their second full Korean album, Wings (2016), sold more than 1.5 million copies, making it BTS's first "million seller". BTS made their debut on the Billboard Hot 100 with the track "DNA" from the EP Love Yourself: Her (2017), which peaked at number 67. Another track from the EP, the remix version of "Mic Drop", peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. Both tracks are certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, a first for any Korean group and the second Korean act overall after Korean artist Psy.

Their third album, Love Yourself: Tear (2018), debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 making them, as of 2019, the first and only Korean act to achieve this . Their fourth album, Love Yourself: Answer (2018), sold over 1.9 million copies on Gaon Album Chart in August 2018, breaking the chart's all-time monthly record previously set by Love Yourself: Tear. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, becoming their second chart-topper. On November 9, 2018, Love Yourself: Answer became the first Korean album certified Gold and the single "MIC Drop" became the first track by a Korean group certified Platinum in the United States. Their latest EP, Map of the Soul: Persona (2019), debuted at number one in the US, becoming their third number one on the Billboard 200. In Korea, they have sold over ten million albums, with five million sold in 2018.

Known for their large social media presence, BTS were the most retweeted celebrities in the world in 2017 and 2018. In October 2016, Billboard placed BTS #1 on their Social 50 chart, another first for a Korean group. In May 2017, they won the Top Social Artist Award at the Billboard Music Awards, becoming the first Korean group to win a BBMA. Guinness World Records noted that BTS had earned a spot in their 2018 edition for "having the world's most Twitter engagements for a music group". In 2018, BTS became #1 on the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list, which ranks South Korea's most powerful and influential celebrities. They also became the youngest ever recipients of the Order of Cultural Merit from the South Korean government. In September 2018, BTS gave a speech at the United Nations as ambassadors for UNICEF and announced "Generation Unlimited", a new campaign focused on "youth development with empowering messages". They were also featured on the cover of Time magazine's international edition as 'Next Generation Leaders'. A December 2018 study conducted by the Hyundai Research Institute concluded that BTS are worth more than $3.6 billion USD to South Korea's economy each year and were the reason one in every 13 foreign tourists visited the country earlier that year. In April 2019, they were named one of Time 100's most influential people of 2019.

The septet co-writes and produces much of their output, to which some media outlets have attributed their success. Their music often features references to literature, paintings, and psychological concepts. In addition, there is an alternative universe storyline running through their music videos, called the BTS Universe, or BU. Some of the recurring themes that appear in their albums include mental health, the troubles of school-age youth, loss, the journey towards loving oneself, and individualism.

Name

The group's name, BTS, stands for the Korean expression Bangtan Sonyeondan (Korean방탄소년단; Hanja防彈少年), literally meaning "Bulletproof Boy Scouts". According to member J-Hope, the name signifies the group's desire "to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets".[5][6] In Japan, they are known as Bōdan Shōnendan (防弾少年団), which translates similarly.[7] In July 2017, BTS announced that their name would also stand for "Beyond the Scene" as part of their new brand identity.[8] This extended their name to mean "growing youth BTS who is going beyond the realities they are facing, and going forward."[9]

Career

2010–2014: Formation and early years

BTS first began its formation in 2010 after Big Hit Entertainment CEO Bang Si-hyuk met with group leader RM and was impressed with his rapping.[10] BTS was originally supposed to be a hip hop group similar to YG Entertainment's 1TYM,[11] but between their initial formation and their debut, Bang Si-hyuk decided that the contemporary youth needed instead "a hero who can lend them a shoulder to lean on, even without speaking a single word".[12]

The group was meant to debut in 2011 and featured on several tracks by artists such as 2AM and Lee Seung-gi before their debut was postponed and the group was reorganized into a more traditional idol group.[13] The lineup was then finalized with Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook in 2012. Six months prior to their debut, they began to gain attention for their presence on various social media websites, as well as song covers on YouTube and SoundCloud.[14][15]

2 Cool 4 Skool

On June 12, 2013, BTS released their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, the first installment in their "school trilogy" series, simultaneously with its lead single "No More Dream", which peaked at number 124 in Korea before quickly falling off the charts.[16][17] While the album peaked at number five in South Korea and eventually sold over 145,000 copies,[18] it was not a major hit, selling only 24,000 copies in 2013.[19] Their subsequent single “We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2” failed to chart.

In 2 Cool 4 Skool, BTS employed an old-school hip-hop sound with scratches from the 1980s-90s and excessively fierce visuals.[20] From their inception, BTS was convinced that telling their story was the only way for the younger generation to relate to their music.[21] Thus, the lyrics of the album primarily reflected on the misunderstanding and prejudice towards them, criticism of the society that diminishes their dreams, and their anxiety and determination towards their future.[20] During the production of the album, Suga and RM rewrote the lyrics of “No More Dream” more than 20 times.[21]

2 Cool 4 Skool’s release was followed by several appearances on Korean music shows.[22][23] Despite being unpolished, these early live performances demonstrated BTS' potential with their intense and charismatic stage presence.[22] Expanding their endeavors to Japan, "No More Dream" was later re-recorded in Japanese and released in June 2014.[24]

O!RUL8,2?

In September 2013, BTS released the second part to their "school trilogy,” the extended play O!RUL8,2?, along with its single "N.O,” which peaked at number 92 in Korea.[25] The EP peaked at number four in Korea and has sold over 160,000 copies to date, including 34,000 copies in its release year.[26] Musically, BTS did not fundamentally change their sound as compared with 2 Cool 4 Skool, utilizing fiery rapping along with trap beats, brass, and soulful melodies. Lyrically, the EP expanded on the theme of dreams and happiness, revealing their frustration under the harsh Korean education system and their determination to confront the struggle of proving themselves.[27] Despite several performances on Korean music shows, the single quickly fell off the charts.[28]

That same month, BTS starred in their own variety show, SBS MTV's Rookie King Channel Bangtan, based on a fake broadcast station, "Channel Bangtan", through which members parodied variety shows such as VJ Special Forces and MasterChef Korea.[29] At the end of the year, BTS was recognized with several New Artist of the Year awards, including the 5th Melon Music Awards, 28th Golden Disc Awards and the 23rd Seoul Music Awards.[30]

2014–2015: Moderate success and first concert tour

Skool Luv Affair

The last act to their "school trilogy", the EP Skool Luv Affair,[31] was released in January 2014 and topped the Gaon Album Chart, selling 100,000 copies in 2014 and over 250,000 copies overall.[32] It also marked BTS’ first appearance on Billboard's World Albums Chart, peaking at number three.[31][33] The album was supported by the singles "Boy in Luv" (Korean: 상남자; RR: Sang-namja) and "Just One Day" (Korean: 하루만; RR: Haruman), which peaked at number 45 and number 149 in Korea, respectively.[34] While Skool Luv Affair musically retained much of their hip-hop influences with the incorporation of R&B and hard rock, the album coincided with a thematic shift from dreams and happiness to love, focusing on school-age and youthful love.[35]

Following Skool Luv Affair’s release, BTS made several appearances on Korean music shows and held their first fan meeting that March with an audience of 3,000 fans in Seoul.[36][37] That July, BTS held their first concert in the United States in West Hollywood for free to an audience of 200 fans.[38] In August, the group also made their first appearance at KCON in Los Angeles.[39] Despite being the newest artist on the list, BTS met such intense crowd reaction that Billboard noted they “wouldn’t be surprised to see a U.S. tour announced soon.”[40]

Dark & Wild

In August 2014, BTS released their first Korean studio album, Dark & Wild, which peaked at number two in Korea and sold over 200,000 copies total.[41] It was supported by two singles: "Danger" and "War of Hormone" (Korean: 호르몬 전쟁, RR: Horeumon Jeonjaeng), which peaked at number 58 and number 173 in Korea, respectively.[42] The album served as a narrative extension of the “school trilogy” and a transition into their next series. Musically, the album fused the grungy electric guitar sounds of rock within the framework of hip-hop and continued to expand their sound towards R&B. The central theme of the album’s lyrics focused on expressing the sentiments of maturing, youthful desires, and impatience for romance.[43] During production of the album, BTS recorded their single "Danger" in a makeshift studio in a garage in Los Angeles.[44]

Following several appearances on Korean music shows, [45] BTS embarked on their first concert tour, 2014 BTS Live Trilogy – Episode II: The Red Bullet, from October to December, held in various halls and theaters in six cities: Seoul, Kobe, Tokyo, Manila, Singapore, and Bangkok.[46]

Wake Up

Their first Japanese studio album, Wake Up (2014), released that December, peaked at number three on the weekly Oricon Albums Chart and sold 28,000 copies.[47] Along with re-recorded Japanese versions of older songs, it also contained the original tracks "Wake Up" and "The Stars."[48]

In support of the album, BTS held their 1st Japan Tour 2015 Wake Up: Open Your Eyes in February 2015 to an audience of 25,000 fans in four cities.[49] After successfully ending their Japan tour, BTS held their second solo concert in Korea, BTS Live Trilogy – Episode I: BTS Begins, in March to a crowd of 6,500 fans.[50]

2015–2017: Mainstream breakthrough and commercial success

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1

Following the moderate success of their "school trilogy", BTS took a risk and made a significant shift to their sound and image. Rather than being the encompassing concept, hip-hop became only one of their many musical aspects and the vocals began to emerge more prominently in their music as they moved away from their previous aggressive, masculine image.[51] For their next series, BTS wanted to express the beauty and anxiousness of "youth" and settled on the title of "花樣年華," which can be loosely interpreted to define "youth" as "the most beautiful moment in life."[52]

Released in March 2015, their third EP, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1, began by "shining a light on the dimmer and overshadowed dangers of youth rather than focusing on the beautiful aspects."[52][53] While the album initially explored the growth and emotional agony of youth, it ultimately culminated in a depiction of youth's playful and uplifting sides.[51] For those who felt BTS' previous sound was too aggressive at times, it was considered a solid offering, with Fuse including it as the only Korean album on their list of the "27 Best Albums of 2015 So Far."[54] The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 has sold over 415,000 copies to date.[55]

The lead single "I Need U" was BTS' first top five hit in Korea[56] and garnered BTS their first ever music show win on SBS MTV's The Show.[57] Although their second single, "Dope (Korean: 쩔어; RR: Jjeoreo)", peaked at number 44 in Korea,[58] its music video became BTS' first to accrue over 100 million views on YouTube in October.[59] "Dope" later peaked at number three on Billboard's World Digital Songs Chart.[60] In May, Twitter launched its first ever K-pop emoji, featuring BTS.[61]

Following several Korean music show appearances, BTS commenced in June their first world tour, the 2015 Live Trilogy Episode: The Red Bullet, visiting halls and theaters in various cities throughout Asia, Oceania, North America, and Latin America.[46] During their tour, BTS released their fourth Japanese single, "For You", to celebrate the first anniversary of their Japanese debut in June. The single topped Oricon's daily chart, selling over 42,000 copies within its first day.[62] They also participated in the Summer Sonic Festival tour in Japan that August.[63][64]

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2

In November 2015, BTS launched their three-city concert tour, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: On Stage tour, in conjunction with their fourth EP The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2, which was later released after completion of their Seoul dates. During their three-day Seoul concert, the group performed their new song "Run", the lead single of their new EP.[65]

Thematically, this EP focused more on the serious and speculative aspects of youth, and was lyrically more profound and thoughtful, touching on the pursuit of success, loneliness, affection for their origins, and the suffering of the younger generation due the unfavorable conditions in current society. Critically, it was praised as the successful merging of the style of The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 with BTS' initial identity.[66]

The album topped the weekly Gaon Album and Billboard World Albums charts and remained atop the latter for multiple weeks, making BTS the first K-pop act to achieve that feat.[67][68] It also marked BTS' first appearance on the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at number 171 with over 5,000 copies.[69] At the 17th Mnet Asian Music Awards, they received the Best World Performer in recognition of their international fan base.

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever

As the grand finale to their "youth series," BTS released in May 2016 their first Korean compilation album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever, which combined a number of songs from both The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 (2015) and The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 (2015) and included three new singles: the top 40 hit "Epilogue: Young Forever", the top 10 hit "Fire" (Korean: 불타오르네; RR: Bultaoreune), and the top 20 hit "Save Me".[70][71] The album topped Gaon Weekly Chart in Korea for two consecutive weeks and peaked at number 107 on the U.S. Billboard 200.[72][73][74] This album was critically considered to be a key breakthrough and one of the most important albums of their career, able to achieve a balance between popular appeal while maintaining BTS' signature sound and raw youthful energy. The track "Epilogue: Young Forever," RM's first producing effort, was considered a "masterpiece that condenses the essence and sentiment of all the themes of the youth series." [75]

Following Korean music show appearances, BTS embarked on their Asia tour, 2016 BTS LIVE The Most Beautiful Moment in Life On Stage: Epilogue, from May to August, visiting 10 cities and performing to 144,000 fans.[76] During their tour, BTS held a landmark two-day concert at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul in May,[77] and the group performed as headliners for the first time at both US KCON shows held that year in Newark (June) and Los Angeles (July), to sold out audiences.[78][79]

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever later went on to win BTS' first major grand prize (daesang) for Album of the Year at the 18th Melon Music Awards.[80] In September, BTS released their second Japanese studio album Youth, which included re-recorded Japanese versions of a number of songs from their "youth series" and Japanese editions of "I Need U" and "Run" as singles.[81] The album sold over 44,000 copies on its first day of release and peaked at number one in Japan.[82]

Wings, You Never Walk Alone and world tour

Back in their home country, pre-orders for the group's second Korean studio album, Wings, released that October, accumulated over 500,000 copies within the first week.[83] The lead single "Blood Sweat & Tears" achieved an "all-kill" in South Korea,[84] becoming their first number one hit on the weekly Gaon Digital Chart.[85] Its music video gained over 6 million views within 24 hours, breaking the previous record held on YouTube for the highest number of views of a K-pop group music video within 24 hours.[86] In South Korea, Wings became the best-selling album in the Gaon Album Chart history at the time.[87] It peaked at #26 on the Billboard 200, which marked the highest chart ranking for a K-pop album ever.[88] It sold more than 1.5 million copies that year making it BTS's first "million seller".[89]

In October 2016, Billboard placed BTS #1 on their Social 50 chart, making them the first Korean group to top the chart.[90] They later won Artist of the Year at the 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards,[91] becoming the first artist not from a "Big Three" entertainment company (SM, YG and JYP) to do so.[92] Also in 2016 they charted on YouTube's Music Global Top 100: 17th on the video chart, 6th on the artist chart and 14th on the tracks chart.[93]

In early 2017, BTS embarked on their Live Trilogy Episode III: The Wings Tour. That February, pre-orders for the repackaged edition of Wings, entitled You Never Walk Alone, reached over 700,000 copies and broke the record for most albums sold in a month.[94] The lead single "Spring Day" (Korean: 봄날; RR: Bomnal) topped eight of the major South Korean online music charts, as well as Gaon,[95] and crashed Melon's digital chart due to the high influx of user traffic.[96] It also entered the US Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 singles chart at number 15 with "zero promotions".[97]

2017–present: International recognition

Love Yourself 承 'Her'

Their fifth EP, Love Yourself: Her, was released that September[98] and featured music from the Chainsmokers' Andrew Taggart for the track "Best of Me".[99] The EP debuted at no. 7 on the Billboard 200, selling 31,000 album-equivalent units.[100] The EP sold over 1.2 million copies on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart in its first month, achieving the highest monthly album sales in the chart's history and the highest on any Korean chart in 16 years, second to g.o.d's Chapter 4 album in 2001.[101] The EP was supported by two singles: the lead single "DNA" and a Steve Aoki Remix of their song "Mic Drop" featuring American rapper Desiigner. "DNA" was released simultaneously with the EP and debuted at number two of the Gaon Digital Chart. The music video was viewed more than 20 million times on YouTube breaking the record for most viewed K-pop group music video within the first 24 hours.[102] "DNA" became the group's first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 85, making BTS the first K-pop boy band to do so and the second Korean act with a Korean-language song.[103] The following week, "DNA" rose to number 67 and became the highest-charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 for a K-pop group, beating Wonder Girls' previous record at number 76.[104] The "Mic Drop (Remix)" peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first top 40 entry for a K-pop group on the chart.[105] "DNA" and "Mic Drop" were later released as a triple-A side single in Japan with the new song "Crystal Snow",[106] which topped the Oricon Chart,[107] becoming the highest-selling single from a K-pop artist within a week.[108] The single sold more than 380,000 copies by the end of the year and was certified double platinum by the RIAJ in January 2018. They were the only foreign artist to do so in 2017.[109][110][111][112]

In November, they became the first K-pop group to perform at the American Music Awards,[113] raising their profile internationally.[114] They won their second Artist of the Year at the 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards,[115] becoming the first act to win the award two years in a row.[116] "Spring Day" later won Best Song of the Year at the Melon Music Awards.[117] In December, they performed on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve to welcome the new year, making them the first K-pop group to be part of the show's lineup.[118] They made their Japanese TV music show debut on TV Asahi's Japan Music Station Super Live on December 22.[119] On November 20, 2017, Guinness World Records revealed that BTS had earned a spot in their 2018 edition for "having the world's most Twitter engagements for a music group".[120]

In January 2018, they became the first artist outside of the "Big Three" to win both grand prize (Daesang) awards at the Golden Disc Awards[121] and the Seoul Music Awards respectively.[122] In February, their "Mic Drop Remix" and "DNA" singles were both certified Gold[123] by the RIAA,[124] making BTS the first and only Korean artist to receive two certifications.[125] An original eight-episode documentary series entitled Burn the Stage, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the group's 2017 Wings Tour, premiered on March 28 on YouTube Premium and ran exclusively on the platform until May 9.[126][127] Their third Japanese studio album, Face Yourself, was released on April 4,[128] debuting at number 43 on the Billboard 200 as the third-highest-charting Japanese album in the history of the chart.[129] Later that same day, the group released a nine-minute video titled "Euphoria", said to be the theme of Love Yourself 起: Wonder.[130]

Love Yourself 轉 'Tear'

On May 20, BTS won Top Social Artist at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, making them the only Korean artist to be nominated for and win the award two years in a row.[131][132] They also debuted as performers at the show, premiering their new single, "Fake Love",[133] from their third Korean-language LP, Love Yourself: Tear, released on May 18.[134] The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 135,000 album-equivalent units (including 100,000 pure album sales), becoming BTS' highest-charting and first number one album in the US, the first K-pop album to top the US albums chart, and the highest-charting album by an Asian act.[135][136] Love Yourself: Tear also reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart, marking the group's first top ten album in the country.[137]

Their single "Fake Love" peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band's highest charting song as well as their first top ten.[138] Overall, "Fake Love" is the seventeenth non-English song to reach the top ten and the first by a K-Pop group.[139] The single also debuted at number seven on Billboard's Streaming Songs chart with 27.4 million streams earned in the week ending May 24, giving BTS their first top ten on the chart and making "Fake Love" the first K-pop song to land on top ten since Psy's "Hangover" feat. Snoop Dogg in 2014.[140] On August 14, "Fake Love" was confirmed by the Recording Industry Association of America to have reached "Gold" status, having sold over 500,000 copies in SPS units. This marked BTS' third song to reach Gold certification.[141]

Love Yourself 結 'Answer' and world tour

On July 17, the group announced the release of their second compilation album Love Yourself: Answer for August 24, 2018, with seven new tracks added to the release.[142][143] It sold over 1.9 million copies on Gaon Album Chart in August 2018, breaking the chart's all-time monthly record once again.[144] Their 2018 world tour, titled BTS World Tour: Love Yourself, began the following day in Seoul.[145] For the final stop of the North American leg, the band performed at Citi Field, marking the first time a Korean act has performed at a U.S. stadium.[146] All 40,000 tickets for the stadium date were later confirmed by Big Hit Entertainment to have sold out in under 20 minutes.[147] On August 24, the album was released, along with the music video for "Idol".[148] An alternative version of the track, featuring Nicki Minaj, was released digitally on the same date,[149] with a music video premiering on September 6.[150] The music video received over 45 million views in its first 24 hours on YouTube, breaking the record of 43.2 million views in 24 hours previously set by Taylor Swift with "Look What You Made Me Do".[151] Debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200, the album became BTS' second number-one album—their second of 2018—and their highest sales week in the country to date.[152] It earned 185,000 album-equivalent units, of which 141,000 were pure album sales,[152] making BTS the only K-pop act with two Billboard 200 toppers and the first pop act with two number one albums in less than a year since One Direction topped the chart with Midnight Memories in 2013 and Four in 2014.[152] In Canada, Love Yourself: Answer became the band's first number-one album on the Canadian Albums Chart, earning over 10,000 consumption units. The single "Idol" reached number five on the Canadian Singles Chart, marking BTS' first top-ten hit in Canada.[153] On October 25, they were featured on "Waste It On Me", a song by DJ Steve Aoki. The song was their first all-English language song and performed primarily by two BTS members, Jungkook and RM.[154][155]

In early November 2018, a popular Japanese music show cancelled BTS' performance citing a T-shirt a member wore the year before.[156] In the same month the Jewish human rights organization Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) stated BTS owed victims an apology for the shirt in 2017, clothing with Nazi symbolism, and a flag.[157] Big Hit Entertainment issued an apology, saying that the images on the clothing were not intended to be hurtful to the victims of Nazism or atomic bombings, and that the band and management would take steps to prevent future mistakes. They also stated the flags were meant to be a commentary on the Korean school system.[158] The apology was accepted by SWC and the Korean Atomic Bomb Victim Association.[159][160]

Crossing over to film, Burn the Stage: The Movie was released in theaters worldwide on November 15, 2018. In the United States it accumulated $1.2 million on opening day for a total of $3.54 million over the three day weekend, breaking the record for the highest grossing event cinema musical production which was previously set in 2014 by the band One Direction. It ranked at number ten in the box office despite selling at only 620 locations compared to the 2,000-4,000 locations for the other top ten sellers.[161]

On November 9, 2018 Love Yourself: Answer became the first Korean album to be certified Gold (500,000+ units), and BTS became the first Korean group to get a Platinum (1,000,000+ units) certification with the single "Mic Drop" in the United States.[162]

According to StubHub BTS was one of 2018's best selling concerts in international markets outside the US, second to only Ed Sheeran.[163] Vivid Seats named BTS the 2018 artist of the year, citing the group's history-making concert at Citi Field.[164]

In December 2018, Billboard reported that BTS ranked #8 in their year-end Top Artist Chart, alongside the likes of Drake and Taylor Swift. They were also the No. 2 act of the year in the Duo/Group ranking, only behind Imagine Dragons.[165] In the same month they made the Bloomberg 50, which cited their "willingness to address social issues, mental health, and politics, despite being in a genre often painted as bubble gum pop".[166] They sold over ten million albums in Korea, with five million being sold in 2018 alone.[167]

Map of the Soul: Persona and stadium world tour

In January 2019, it was announced that BTS had begun production on new music, with a planned release date between late April and early May.[168] The album, titled Map of the Soul: Persona, was announced on March 11, 2019, with the release date officially slated for April 12.[169] On February 10, 2019, BTS attended the 61st Grammy Awards. They also presented an award, a first for a Korean act.[170][171] It was their first time attending the event following an appearance by the group at the LA Grammy Museum in 2018.[172][173]

BTS announced a stadium tour called Love Yourself: Speak Yourself in March 2019, with dates in multiple stadium venues including Wembley Stadium, Stade de France, MetLife Stadium, Rose Bowl, and Soldier Field. All dates had sold out within 2 hours, and shortly after, Big Hit announced second dates for all venues.[174]

On April 12, BTS released Map of the Soul: Persona and the single "Boy With Luv", featuring American singer Halsey.[175] On the same day, Spotify announced that BTS became the first Asian act to surpass 5 billion streams on the platform.[176] BTS also performed on Saturday Night Live on the 12th, a first for a K-pop act.[177] The group's appearance was anticipated as one of the biggest in the show's history.[178] The following day, it was confirmed that "Boy With Luv" became the most-viewed online video within the first 24 hours, peaking #1 on YouTube and #2 overall.[179]

In April 2019, BTS were named as one of Time 100's most influential people of 2019.[180] With Map of the Soul: Persona, they became the first Korean act to hit number one on the UK Albums Chart.[181] In the US, the group notched their third number one on the Billboard 200 chart in less than a year. The last group to achieve the feat was English rock band The Beatles in 1995-1996, having three number one albums in the span of 11 months and a week.[182]

Artistry

Music

The septet co-writes, produces, and composes much of their output, to which some media outlets have attributed their success.[183][184] The group's early musical style and image was influenced by hiphop, as in "N.O.", "No More Dream", and "We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2".[185] They later branched out into R&B and rock music with "Danger", their lead single from their first full-length album Dark and Wild, and "Boy in Luv", from their record Skool Luv Affair.[186] The members' solo songs in Wings incorporated a diverse range of genres, with neo soul for V's "Stigma", gospel for J-Hope's "Mama" and piano-rap for Suga's "First Love".[187]

Lyrics and themes

BTS has been praised for "speak[ing] honestly about topics they deem important, even in a conservative society" by Jeff Benjamin in Fuse magazine.[188] They try to include experiences everyone has felt in life, such as sadness and loneliness, and turn them to something more light and manageable. When asked if it is difficult to write about things like mental health, Suga responded,

"We feel that people who have the platform to talk about those things really should talk more, because they say depression is something where you go to the hospital and you’re diagnosed, but you can’t really know until the doctor talks to you. [...] More and more, I think artists or celebrities who have a voice should talk about these problems and bring it up to the surface."

RM also stated they try to not sound as if they're preaching or reprimanding people in their songs as everyone has different lives and different destinies.[189] Tamar Herman of Billboard magazine noted that the band's songs have recurring themes. Their "school trilogy"—2 Cool 4 Skool (2013), O!RUL8,2? (2013), and Skool Luv Affair (2014)—explored "the troubles and anxieties of school-age youth."[190] Their next album series, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life (2015-2016), "tackled a subject that the vast majority of youth experience, but few pop musicians articulate well: Mental health and the desire to belong in society." The 12-minute video titled "Prologue", an in-universe prequel to the events of the "I Need U" music video, has "the creative direction with non-linearity, temporal lingering over character expression and set pieces, and self-reflexive cinematic techniques [that] speaks the language of arthouse films." [191] Wings (2016) touched on mental health, female empowerment, temptation, and sin.[192] "Not Today" from You Never Walk Alone is an anti-establishment anthem, with messages advocating for minority groups[193], while "Spring Day" was created to memorialize the victims of the Sewol Ferry tragedy.[194] Love Yourself: Her, the first of four EPs of the "Love Yourself" series,[195] deals with "love, friendship, loss, [and] death",[190] in addition to being about falling in an obsessive love.[196] The second entry, Love Yourself 起: Wonder, was a nine minute concept video that served as a music video for "Euphoria", a solo song by Jungkook, as well as a continuation of the The Most Beautiful Moment in Life storyline.[197] BTS's third studio album, titled Love Yourself: Tear, was the third entry in the series, and was praised for "dealing with the cycle of grief that lingers through a separation."[198] BTS's third compilation album, titled Love Yourself: Answer, was the fourth and final entry in the series, and was praised for its conclusion of the overarching theme of the Love Yourself era, being called "a magnum opus from BTS that that few other artists, boy bands or otherwise, ever can hope to achieve."[199]

South Korean president Moon Jae-in, in a letter to BTS, recognized their sincerity and inclusion of diversity as key to their success, writing, "Each of the seven members sings in a way that is true to himself and the life he wants to live. Their melody and lyrics transcend regional borders, language, culture, and institutions."[200] Grace Jeong, editor-in-chief of Soompi, has said, "BTS has something to say, and has a great marketing strategy that doesn't alienate non-Korean-speaking fans."[192] The Wire mentioned in their article that "BTS are big because they are 'different'" in that they have creative input to the band's sound.[201]

Influences

BTS' musical inspirations include Nas, Eminem, Kanye West, Drake, Post Malone, and Charlie Puth.[202]

In addition to musical inspirations, BTS also takes many inspirations from literary, psychological, artistic, and philosophical mediums. Their album Wings is inspired by Hermann Hesse's coming of age novel, Demian.[203] Their song "Blood Sweat and Tears" references Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zurathustra, Herbert James Draper's The Lament for Icarus, Pieter Bruegel's Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, and Pieter Bruegel's The Fall of the Rebel Angels by quoting Nietzsche and featuring the three aforementioned paintings in the music video.[204] Their "Spring Day" music video contains lyrical and visual references to Ursula Le Guin's short story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.[205] The Love Yourself series was primarily influenced by Erich Fromm's The Art of Loving,[206] while their song "Magic Shop" of Love Yourself: Tear was inspired by James R. Doty's memoir Into the Magic Shop.[207] Their 2019 album Map of the Soul: Persona gains its name from Murray Stein's Jung's Map of the Soul: An Introduction.[208]

Impact and influence

In 2015 BTS participated as judges for a K-pop cover dance competition in the Bridge to Korea festival in Russia, an event that aimed to promote tourism between the two countries, where they also performed on stage.[209] In June 2017, Time Magazine named the band one of the twenty-five most influential people on the internet,[210] and Forbes Korea Power Celebrity named them the fifth most influential celebrities of Korea.[211] The group was the most tweeted about celebrities in the world for both 2017 and 2018.[212][213]

In October 2018, Time Magazine featured BTS on the cover of their global edition, naming them "Next Generation Leaders".[214] In the same month they performed at the Korea-France Friendship Concert in Paris, a summit meant to show the friendly relations between France and South Korea. Around 400 officials attended the meeting, including South Korean president Moon Jae-in.[215] BTS became #1 on the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list in 2018, which ranks South Korea's most powerful and influential celebrities, as well as became the youngest ever recipients to be awarded the Order of Cultural Merit from the South Korean government.[216][217]

It was reported that BTS brought US$3.63 billion to the Korean economy each year, and that one in every thirteen foreigners who visit Korea do so because of them.[218][219] In 2018, the Hyundai Economic Research Institute listed BTS as one out of seven positive factors for the economy that year.[220] The Korea Foundation, a government affiliated organization, attributed the surge of interest in the Hallyu Movement between 2016 and 2018 largely to BTS.[221] According to the Korea Customs Service, online purchases of K-Pop items surged in popularity in 2018 due to BTS.[222] Yung Duk Kim, vice president and chief operating officer of KOCCA, stated K-pop has “skyrocketed” since BTS' popularity surged and it has created jobs not only for BTS and their team but other idols as well.[223]

Their chart success and popularity in numerous countries has prompted many Western media outlets to nickname them as 'the biggest boyband in the world'.[224][225] In 2018 they ranked on the Global Artist Chart, second to only Drake. It was the first time any Korean musician made the list.[226] BTS, along with Ariana Grande and Drake, boosted global music sales to $19 billion in 2018. Such profit had not been seen since 2006 before digital purchases gained momentum.[227]

According to the National Gugak Center, the organization had to expand the amount of Korean instrument sounds available as demand increased from Korean and foreign producers alike after "Idol".[228] According to Herald Corporation, idol groups have begun changing the themes of their lyrics from love stories to words such as "looking for myself" which is an influence and reflection of the "Love Yourself" era BTS had from 2017-2018 and the speech RM gave at the United Nations.[229]

Various artists have cited BTS as an influence, such as (G)I-dle,[230] D-Crunch's Hyunho,[231] The Boyz' Younghoon,[232] SF9's Zuho,[233] Euna Kim,[234] Golden Child's Jaehyun,[235] Wanna One,[236] IN2IT,[237] Park Ji-hoon,[238] Kim Dong-han,[239][240] Seven O'Clock,[241] Hyeongseop X Euiwoong,[242] Noir,[243] Victon's Sejun,[244] and Loona.[245]

The "BTS Effect" was termed by various news outlets. They used it whenever companies profited from BTS' influence, such as when the banking firm KB installment savings accounts increased six times compared to the prior year after signing a contract with BTS and how after BTS topped the Billboard 200 stock prices of entertainment companies in South Korea shot up for five days afterwards.[246][247][248] It was also observed when it was reported all companies tied to BTS, such as Netmarble, NetMark, Soribada, Key Shares, GMP, and Diffie, had their stocks raise various amounts.[249]

When their partnership with Mattel was announced in 2019, the company's stocks raised more than 8% within a day.[250] According to the IFPI, BTS were the second best selling artists worldwide in terms of physical, digital, and streaming platforms, coming second only to Drake.[226] The IFPI had also reported that BTS had the second and third best selling albums worldwide in 2018 with Love Yourself: Answer and Love Yourself: Tear, respectively.[251]

In 2019, BTS were named one of Time 100's most influential people of 2019, a first for the group. Their tribute was written by singer-songwriter Halsey, who previously collaborated with them on their Map of the Soul: Persona single, "Boy with Luv".[252]

Awards and achievements

BTS have received many awards and honors, including 15 Melon Music Awards, 15 Mnet Asian Music Awards, 14 Golden Disc Awards, 12 Seoul Music Awards, 10 Gaon Chart Music Awards, 4 Korean Music Awards, 2 Billboard Music Awards (first Korean group), and one American Music Award (first Korean group). In Korea, BTS have one Multi-Million album and one Million album.[253] As the first Korean group to receive RIAA certification, BTS have one Platinum single, 3 Gold singles, and one Gold album in the United States.[254] In Japan, BTS have 2 Multi-Platinum singles, one Multi-Platinum album, and 3 Gold albums.

BTS also have a large social influence and currently hold seven Guinness World Records, including the world record for most Twitter engagements. To date they have spent 117 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Social 50 chart.[255] In October 2018, BTS was awarded a fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit from the President of South Korea for their contributions in spreading Korean culture and language.[217]

BTS has worked with Puma Korea as brand ambassadors since 2015.[256] In 2016, Nexon released character avatars based on the members for their RPG game Elsword.[257] That year, they topped the 'Boy Group Brand Power Ranking' published by the Korean Corporate Reputation Research Institute for 9 out of 12 months.[258]

In 2017, BTS worked as honorary tourism ambassadors for Seoul as part of the 'I Seoul U' program. The group filmed an advertisement produced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, which was subsequently aired in over 100 countries, and released the promotional song "With Seoul."[259] BTS also worked as brand models for Lotte Duty Free Shop[260] and collaborated with popular Korean communication app Line to create new Line 'characters', called BT21, that serve as emojis, stickers, clothing, and more.[261]

Expanding their endorsements overseas, BTS worked with Japanese department store 109 to promote their eighth Japanese single, "Mic Drop/DNA/Crystal Snow", through a Christmas campaign that used "Crystal Snow" as the image song for the collaboration.[262] Pop-up shops selling various original and limited edition BTS merchandise were opened at four different locations: the flagship Shibuya 109 store, and then at the Osaka, Kagoshima, and Fukuoka branches.[263] BTS also promoted Yahoo! Japan's Yahoo WiFi in 2018.[264]

In 2018, BTS became global brand ambassadors for Puma,[265] promoting the remix of their 'Turin' line and Puma's Sportstyle line worldwide.[266][267] BTS also worked as the new brand spokespersons for KB Kookmin Bank, one of the top four largest banks in South Korea.[268][269] Their collaboration was highly successful, generating the opening of over 180,000 accounts, and BTS extended their contract with KB Kookmin Bank through 2019.[270] BTS also served as global brand ambassadors for LG Electronics, promoting their new flagship model, the LG G7 ThinQ.[271] Coca-Cola Korea[272] had signed BTS on as their new campaign models for promotions during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.[273][274] BTS also worked as global brand ambassadors for Hyundai Motor as part of the company's promotions for their 2019 flagship SUV the "Palisade". The car's unveiling at the 2018 LA Auto Show featured a clip of the members promoting the car.[275] In the same year the mobile game SuperStar BTS was released through Dalcomsoft, Inc.[276]

In January 2019 it was announced that BTS would collaborate with the manufacturer Mattel to create dolls modeled off their outfits from the music video "Idol".[250] That same month, they partnered with LICO and Line Webtoon to release a 16-part comics series entitled Save Me in the United States and parts of Asia, as part of the ongoing BTS Universe.[277][278] This is the third webtoon released with BTS following the releases of Hip Hop Monster and We On published through the Nate Webtoon portal in 2014.[279] A simulation game, named BTS World, was announced to be released by Netmarble Games in 2019.[280]

In February 2019 it was announced Medicom Toy teamed with BTS to create "BE@RBRICK", a block-like toy with the BTS logo and gold-hued accents that was modeled after BTS' stage clothes.[281] In the same month Funko announced they would be releasing BTS versions in the coming year.[282] BTS also signed a contact with the brand Mediheal to endorse mask sheets that are set to be released in March.[283]

Philanthropy

In 2015, BTS donated seven tons (7,187 kg) of rice to charity at the K-Star Road opening ceremony held in Apgujeong-dong.[284] The following year they participated in ALLETS's "Let's Share the Heart" collaboration charity campaign with Naver[285] to raise donations for LISA, a Korean medical charity which promotes organ and blood donation.[286]

In January 2017, news media reported that BTS and Big Hit Entertainment had donated KR₩100,000,000 (US$ 87,915) to the 4/16 Sewol Families for Truth and A Safer Society, an organization connected to the families of the 2014 Sinking of MV Sewol. Each member donated KR₩10,000,000 and Big Hit Entertainment donated an additional KR₩30,000,000. The donation was intended to have been made in secret.[287] Later that year, BTS officially launched their Love Myself campaign, an initiative dedicated to helping "protect and support child and teen victims of domestic and school violence as well as sexual assault around the world...", in partnership with the Korean Committee for UNICEF.[288] BTS donated KR₩500,000,000 (US$448,000) from the members and 100% of all sales of official goods for the Love Myself campaign over the next two years, in addition to donations collected from donation desks installed by UNICEF,[289] towards several social programs to prevent violence against children and teens and to provide support for victims of violence.[290] In addition, 3% of the sales from each album in the Love Yourself series (Love Yourself: Her, Love Yourself: Tear, and Love Yourself: Answer) will be donated to the cause.[290] Within two months of its launch the campaign raised an additional KR₩106,000,000, taking the worldwide funds total to KR₩606,000,000.[291] In November 2018, UNICEF Korea announced that the Love Myself campaign had raised over KR₩1,600,000,000 (US$1,400,000).[292]

In April 2018, BTS participated in Stevie Wonder's "Dream Still Lives" tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. alongside other celebrities, sharing their dreams and hopes for the world.[293] On June 27 of the same year the group donated to the ALS hospital building fund.[294] On September 24, 2018, BTS attended the United Nations 73rd General Assembly for the launch of the youth initiative called "Youth 2030: The UN Youth Strategy" and its corresponding UNICEF campaign titled "Generation Unlimited".[295][296] On behalf of the group, BTS' leader RM delivered a six-minute speech in English about self-acceptance, as well as their Love Myself campaign.[297][295] According to UNICEF, the goal of the initiative is "to provide quality education and training for young people".[298] BTS were selected to attend due to their impact on youth culture through their music and social messages, previous philanthropic endeavors, and popularity among the 15-to-25-year-old age demographic.[295][296]

In addition to the group raising money for charity, both the members themselves and their fanbase also participate in philanthropy. On December 4, 2018, Jin personally donated bags of food, bowls, and blankets to animals under the protection of the Korean Animal Welfare Association.[299] On December 20, 2018, J-Hope donated ₩150,000,000 (US $133,000) to ChildFund Korea in order to support "students in the arts, music, and physical education who need financial support in order to pursue their dreams, and students who need assistance with paying for health care". Later, On February 18, 2019, J-Hope donated ₩100,000,000 (US $87,915) to support low-income students attending his alma mater through ChildFund Korea. On March 9, 2019, Suga donated ₩100,000,000 (US $87,914) to the Korea Pediatric Cancer Foundation and 329 plush toys to the children patients, alongside placing his gifts underneath the fanbase name.[300] It was belatedly reported on April 5, 2019 that Jimin donated ₩100,000,000 (US $87,914) to the Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education to be used towards education development. In addition, it is reported that BTS's fanbase donated a total of 30 million won (approximately $26,373) to the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association in the name of BTS to help the victims of the Gangwon Province wildfire. [301]

BTS Universe

The BTS Universe, also known as the Bangtan Universe or BU, is an alternate universe created by Big Hit Entertainment that winds through the group's music videos, social media, teasers, and short films. The webtoon entitled "Save Me" closely follows the story line, along with their book HYYH: The Notes 1.[302][303]

The chronology of the universe began with the song "I Need U" and spans to the present time.[304] It tells the story of the seven members in an alternate reality and depicts their anxieties and uncertainties as they confront their futures.[305][306]

Mariejo Ramos from The Inquirer said about the universe "no other artists have successfully mixed the same literary technique to pop music in such a scale." They used the alternate universe and literary books, such as The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, as a framing device for their albums to help showcase their artistry.[307] Mixing the two has created an interactive environment for their fans who make theories when new material or hints are released.[308][309][310]
