Šekovići
Template:Infobox RS Šekovići (Cyrillic: Шековићи) is a municipality and town in northeastern Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The main economc activity is logging. The land area is 195 km².
Demographics
According to the 1991 census the municipality had a population of 9,639, including:
- Serbs (94.26%) (See: Serbs of Bosnia and Herzegovina)
- Muslims by nationality (Bosniaks) (3.40%)
- others (2.34%)
The town itself had a population of 4,323 with 97% Serbs and 3% others. Most of the Bosniak population lived in the village of Papraća.
History
Šekovići were named after one part of its population that moved here from Šekovina in Herzegovina in the 17th century. Some famous people whose ancestors originating from Šekovići include Ilija Birčanin, Hadži Milentije, and prota Mateja Nenadović. Jelena Jakšić Glinska, a mother of the Russian emperor Ivan Grozni, was also from Šekovići by origin. Monasteries Papraća and Lovnica situated in this area were important centres of literacy and freedom.
