Emeterio Arrese, or Emeterio Arrese Bauduer (1869–1954) was a Spanish lyrical and post-romantic poet and writer in the Basque language[1] . He studied at the Piarists of Tolosa. He was a friend of Pedro María Otaño (1857–1910), the extraordinary bertsolari, who became fond of Euskera and poetry. Due to which his lyrics reflected then-scarce popular tastes. He also dedicated himself to propagandizing Basque pelota, building frontons, and similar things.
Arrese spent much time abroad, mostly as a contractor, and mainly in Havana and San Luis de Missouri. He led an adventurous life, making a fortune several times, only to squander it later each time. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean forty-four times.[2]
Biography
Arrese's poetry is traditional in nature and post-romantic. His writing is similar to bertsolarism, with topics typical to the genre, the passage of time, stability or balance, life, and love for country.[3]
Emeterio Arrese passed the witness of post-romantic poetry to Xabier de Lizardi, and he, at least in certain periods, even surpassed the threshold of this current. Arrese and Lizardi were good friends who deeply respected each other. In his last years, he professed a special affection for Lizardi's work.[4]

He wrote the lyrics for the opera of his friend, the Toulouse musician Eduardo Mocoroa, entitled Sentierak, which premiered in Pamplona in 1900, and which was later recast with Leidor.[5][6]
Likewise, his are the lyrics of Aiton baten eriotza ("Euskeltzale", June 1898, and in "Euskalerria" 1900). Zara, opera with music by E. Mocoroa, awarded for "Euskalerriaren Alde" in 1911, and published in 1913, together with the poem Nere bidean.[7][8][9]
