Barry N. Haack
I have written and substantially many Wikipedia pages, typically about historical figures and contemporaries who stand out in my profession. Most recently (last fall) I submitted an article on Barry N. Haack, a recently retired professor who is a pioneer in the field of remote sensing. The draft article was immediately critiqued for lack of references (although there were many). Many more were added, and the article we resubmitted nearly five months ago. So far, no editor has looked at it. How do I call it to the attention of editors now that it has been revised? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Twilson088 (talk • contribs) 00:03, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

- @Twilson088: you've submitted the draft for review, but it may take a while to be looked at by a reviewer, so unfortunately all you can do is be patient. As the yellow box at the bottom of the draft says,
There are 4,007 pending submissions waiting for review.
However - while I am not a reviewer myself - the "Early Life and Education" section appears to have no references at all, so consider adding inline citations to relevant references in that section. Seagull123 Φ 01:04, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
What does URL live status mean at the end of a reference
Can someone explain to me what URL live status is at the end of a reference. Also is it important when adding references to a Wikipedia article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikieditor6557 (talk • contribs) 01:23, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Wikieditor6557: see the documentation at
{{cite web}}
, which is a massive tangle of information which is likely to make your eyes glaze over. The URL status is unused unless the archive URL is set. When url-status=live, it means that the original URL is still good, but the reference is also available at the archive site. This affects the way the reference is presented to the reader, so the reader will click on the original and only go to the archive if the original has died. As an editor you should put it in only if the original URL is still live and you also have an archive URL, and you have a suspicion that the original is likely to remain live for awhile. -Arch dude (talk) 03:21, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Sandbox
I have a question regarding the wikipedia sandbox. If I create a draft on sandbox and click the publish button but I do NOT click to submit it for review, is that draft only visible to me? SpotBeanz (talk) 06:19, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- No, it is publicly visible. Enjoyer — talk 06:46, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- SpotBeanz, virtually everything on Wikipedia is visible to everyone. The button was changed to Publish changes due to some legal mumbo-jumbo a while back to make people understand that their edits are public, even if the edits aren't in mainspace. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 07:01, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- Tenryuu, which "legal mumbo-jumbo" is this? Can you provide a link? Sounds interesting to read. Enjoyer — talk 08:14, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Enjoyer of World: See Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous)/Archive 57#Change to the edit submission button label. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:18, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Enjoyer of World: The "reasoning" behind the change relates to our terms of use and copyright law. Any time you put anything anywhere on the Internet in a form that is visible to anyone else, you are "publishing" it in the sense of the term in copyright law, and you own the copyright. By our terms of use, when you make any additions of any type anywhere in Wikipedia, You agree to license your copyright to us (and anyone else) under the CC-BY-SA license. Calling the button "publish" makes it clear(?!) that you understand that you are licensing your copyright. This has caused quite a bit of confusion among non-lawyers who are trying to add an article to Wikipedia and who use the term "publish" with its more common definition. -Arch dude (talk) 18:05, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- Tenryuu, which "legal mumbo-jumbo" is this? Can you provide a link? Sounds interesting to read. Enjoyer — talk 08:14, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- @SpotBeanz: Please note, though, that the Wikipedia:Sandbox is commmon to all users, and is routinely cleared out or edited by other editors, and so is not a good place for a draft article. Your personal sandbox at User:SpotBeanz/sandbox or another page under your userspace, like User:SpotBeanz/Article Name Here, or Draft:Article Name Here is a better place to draft an article. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 05:50, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Question about categories
How is it decided whether an article, or the category of the same name, or both, will be included in a given supercategory? For example, both United States and Category:United States are located in Category:Superpowers, only United States is included in Category:Transcontinental countries, only United States is located in Former British colonies, but only Category:United States is located in Category:Former British colonies and protectorates in the Americas. —Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 07:44, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Naddruf: Not everybody who adds an article to a category knows all of the categories that exist, so if there are some that should be added, you are always welcome to do so. My only rule of thumb is you want to make sure that you put the article in the most specific category. If you don’t, the next person might. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 09:10, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- That doesn't really answer my question. I'm not sure if the article and the category of the same name should be in all the same categories. —Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 16:29, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia Twitter Handle and iPhone / Android App ...
Does anyone know a) who works the Wikipedia Twitter account? b) who determines the main page content on the iPhone / Android app (not the en.m.wikipedia.org mobile browser website main page)? Any leads? Thanks. Ktin (talk) 09:15, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Ktin: meta:Social media appears to say that it's the WMF's communications department that runs the social media accounts, and specifically AJohnson (WMF) who runs the Twitter account. I can't find anything about the apps, however. Seagull123 Φ 15:41, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Seagull123:, thanks much. Dropped AJohnson (WMF) a message on their talk page. However, seems like they are not very active on this side of Wikipedia. Let's see if the message reaches them. Thanks for the lead. Ktin (talk) 16:57, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Ktin, that's a good question. Unfortunately it's not mentioned at mw:Wikimedia Apps/iOS FAQ. The Featured Article card is the same as on wp:en main page. Picture of the Day is from Commons rather than 'pedia; Commons:Picture of the day says that the POTD is selected from Featured Pictures, but I couldn’t find who chooses that or where it's discussed. On This Day currently appears to have the same items as January 31#Events. Places I guess might be random if the app has no access to location services, maybe with some filter so that you only get good articles or major places (just guessing there). Top Read would, I suppose, be auto-generated from pageview stats – I wonder if it's for previous calendar day, dynamic throughout the day, or some kind of rolling multi-day average? I have In the News enabled in Settings, but don’t get a card for it. Pelagic ( messages ) – (20:14 Sun 31, AEDT) 09:14, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, I am trying to update this article with current information and it keeps being rejected. I did a "request edit" in the talk page disclosed that I am a family member of Annabelle Chvostek's. I am trying to be as neutral and factual as possible. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong so I can correct it. Thank you! Here is the additional info for the page:
Resilience was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award and includes a co-write with Bruce Cockburn'. In 2012, Annabelle released the album 'Rise', which she co-produced with Torontonian Don Kerr. 'Rise' was nominated for a Juno Award and a Canadian Folk Music Award. In 2015, she released the 'Be The Media, co-produced with Jeff Oehler of Beehive Productions in Saranac Lake, NY.
Her upcoming album "String Of Pearls" is due out in March, 2021. It is a collaboration between Canadian and Uruguayan musicians, with musical arrangements by Uruguayan composer and multi-instrumentalist, Fernando Rosa. "String Of Pearls" was co-produced by David Travers-Smith, Fernando Rosa, and Annabelle Chvostek, and was recorded in both Toronto and Montevideo.:

Wikipedia Says Trump Jr Is a ‘Conspiracy Theorist’ Who ‘Colluded With Russia’ And ‘Incited Capitol Riot’
I have pretty much always had faith in what I read on Wikipedia, however this statement (Wikipedia Says Trump Jr Is a ‘Conspiracy Theorist’ Who ‘Colluded With Russia’ And ‘Incited Capitol Riot’) and all it's posturing is political in nature by Wikipedia Staff, this statement serves no value other than to discredit Mr. Trump Jr and will forever discredit Wikipedia as being an openly "Biased" publication! Forget about Republicans and Democrats! Wikipedia stood for truth, worthwhile information, free speech, journalistic integrity! However now it has resorted to "Tabloid Status" and your content will be permanently ignored by at least 80 million US Citizens and the world at large![1] Jimfi1955 (talk) 17:13, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

- @Jimfi1955: The statements in our article are referenced to multiple reliable sources, primarily news organizations with international reputations. The En volve article you cite makes no attempt to refute these allegations and cites no sources. En volve describes itself as conservative. That site is a set of web pages with a layout like a news site, but it is apparently just a blog. It has none of the hallmarks of a reliable source. In particular. There is no statement as to who runs the site, or who the publisher is. A web search for En volve returns only two hits for the site (and many hits for totally different sites): here are the hits: the factcheck misinformation directory and the mediabiasfactcheck entry. Thus the site is completely biased and published falsehoods, and it is not even itself notable enough to have a Wikipedia entry. You should ask yourself why you trust such a site more than you trust Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 03:08, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Jimfi1955: Wikipedia does not claim to be free of bias. Any bias in sources will be reflected in Wikipedia. We present the sources to readers so they can evaluate and judge them for themselves as to bias. We don't claim anything here is the truth, only that it is possible to verify what us written. If there are missing reliable sources and you are interested in civilly collaborating with other editors, regardless of their political views, please offer your suggestions. If you just want to push talking points from the conservative bubble, and read only what you want to hear, this is not the place for you. 331dot (talk) 11:57, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
When speaking of others, maybe a certain degree of noninflammatory hyperbole would be in order. Remember those who do not follow Liberal party line dogma, further those who question the reemergence of involuntary servitude of the masses by this mass media orchestrated campaign of censorship and suppression of the truth in todays climate, and lastly those who question the malignant masters of the bourgeoisie are at this point in fact ‘Conspiracy Theorist’ which is of course our right, one of which I might ad is contained within the "Bill of Rights"! For one instance forget about ones political indoctrination and subjugation by either the Left or the Right, because I know I have, I'm a "Free Thinker" and deal with the truth, not solicitous platitudes describing anyone maliciously for any reason! Truth, not speculation, nothing less, nothing more, and definitely nothing from the "Fact Checked" political pundits representing either side alleging an unbiased viewpoint. Next, I would like to also address your use of the term "Conservative Bubble" which speaks volumes as to your political affiliations. Furthermore, I realize bias will always exist in a free society with "Free Speech" simply because the animal mankind is bellicose by nature and independent in thought, however we can curtail our avaricious nature and exhibit a minimal degree of literary neutrality of with the aforementioned statement about Mr. Trump Jr clearly did not and is overtly obvious to the most simplest layperson that mass media manipulation along with suppression of the truth are driving this campaign of melee, divisiveness, and strategic political posturing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jimfi1955 (talk • contribs) 16:50, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Is the information displayed on Wikipedia biased or unbiased in nature? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jimfi1955 (talk • contribs) 17:16, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Jimfi1955: Wikipedia strives for a neutral point of view (WP:NPOV). We do this by requiring that our editors cite their assertions to reliable sources (WP:RS). If those sources are biased, then Wikipedia is biased, but we strive to counter this by using multiple sources when available. -Arch dude (talk) 17:43, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

- Hello. I'm afraid that, like many people, you misunderstand what Wikipedia is. It is an encyclopaedia, not social media or a directory. Articles should be neutrally written, and based almost entirely on independent sources, not on what the subject says or wants to say. If we have an article about you, you should not be editing it, as you are likely to find it difficult to keep the tone neutral; but you are welcome to suggest edits to the article on its talk page, using the edit request procedure. The changes you made to the article were unsourced, and we have no way of telling whether unsourced material is correct or not, so we generally remove it, especially from articles about living people. Please see ABOUTYOU for more information. --ColinFine (talk) 19:17, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Your cavity wall insulation page shows a bad photo the wall cavity should not be abridged by insulation all accross .There should be an air space gap between face of insulation bat and outer wall . The width of the fibre glass bat should be about less than a third of what is shown in you bad photo representation. - Hello, IP user. If you have an improvement to suggest to a Wikipedia article, please make your suggestion on that article's talk page. Where it concerns a picture: if you can find a better picture in Wikimedia Commons, then you can edit the article to use that picture. if not, it's a bit harder, because copyright severely restricts the images we can use. If you have a better picture yourself (that you took), you are welcome to upload it using the upload wizard, and then add it to the article in question. But it sounds as if you want material added to the article as well, in which case, posting your suggestion on the article's talk page - with citations to reliable published sources, please - is the way to go. --ColinFine (talk) 19:24, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

- Hello. It's not clear whether you mean you have a picture to upload, or want help finding a picture. If you have a picture of him that you took (so it is your own work), you may upload it to Wikimedia Commons, using the Upload Wizard, and then inset it into an article. But if you haven't got a picture you took yourself, it is much more complicated, as the copyright owner has to license it to be free for reuse (not just give permission for Wikipedia to use it). But if you want to work on that article, much much much more important than cosmetic things like pictures would be adding citations to reliable sources for all the information which is currently not sourced. --ColinFine (talk) 23:10, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
Rename
Hi, I want to translate my username into English. How can I do this?--ارتین محمدیان (talk) 22:00, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- ارتین محمدیان, are you referring to a complete name change of your account or just on English Wikipedia? If it's the former, you will want to look into a name change (easiest is through Special:GlobalRenameRequest if you have a connected email address to the account), or if the latter, just change your signature (WP:SIGTUT gives a tutorial on that). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 22:44, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

(•_•)
(Συζητώ) 22:46, 29 January 2021 (UTC)- The (slight) problem with that solution, ارتین محمدیان is that in order to ping you (as I have done here), most editors on English Wikipedia will not have an Arabic Keyboard, so will have to copy and paste your username. That in turn is tricky if you're not used to it, because of the way the editor works with selections on RTL text. (I thinik it is especially likely that they may miss the alif at the beginning: some people may not even realise it is a letter). It's not a major problem, but my guess is that you will not get some intended notifications, because people either copy your username wrong, or give up on pinging you at all. --ColinFine (talk) 22:58, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

- @ارتین محمدیان: It would be a nice gesture of goodwill to the community if you would go back and undo the edits that were grammatically incorrect. The rule of thumb with using “a” versus “an” is if the following word starts with a vowel, or has a silent consonant like with “hour”, you need “an”. Otherwise you use “a”. So it’s “a disruptive editor” instead of “an disruptive editor”. And why also the rapid undo of the IP edits? This does not fit the profile of a brand new editor. Category question
Category:Former buildings and structures in Finland now includes both Vyborg railway station and Vyborg railway station (1913). However, this is a little bit confusing, as Vyborg railway station hasn't gone anywhere, it's still standing there in Vyborg, and in active use. It's just a "former building in Finland" because Vyborg itself is no longer in Finland. Is this OK, or should there be some sort of separate category for buildings that aren't former but just formerly were somewhere? JIP | Talk 00:19, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- @JIP: You added Category:Former buildings and structures of Finland to Vyborg railway station in 2007.[3] That seems wrong. Category:Former buildings and structures says: This category is for buildings and structures that no longer exist. I don't think we have or should have categories for places which were formerly in another country. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:00, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello, need to make an edit to the Oak Park-River Forest High School alumni section. I don't feel comfortable doing it myself. Ludacris should be on the page. Chris Bridges has mentioned several times that he went to the school. - Nope. The only source in Ludacris "supporting" that claim was IMDb, which is unreliable. (The Chicago Tribune reference only mentioned his middle school.) I've removed it. If you have a reliable source, then it could be restored in the article and he could be added to the high school. Clarityfiend (talk) 05:43, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- Also, this is the wrong forum for questions like this. The talk page of the high school (or possibly Ludacris) is where you should have gone. Clarityfiend (talk) 05:45, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- There's a Washington Post article which talks about it, but it requires a subscription. From what I can see (briefly), it sounds like it debunks the idea, but I can't tell for sure. Clarityfiend (talk) 05:47, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Clarityfiend: I can see (without a subscription – maybe they have an article views per day limit) what appears to be the article as published, which matches this archive, but it seems to end abruptly, simply saying that Ludacris said to Czarniak that he attended the school, and that she then tweeted that he was there, but it's not clear she remembers him. The author goes on to say that they are both 37, so there's a good chance they were there at the same time, but then makes no claim about the truth of the statement. Czarniak asked him to set the record straight. 'One year, yep,' Ludacris said. 'One year. Because my mother lived in Centreville and I moved from Chicago to there. It was for one year'." Page Protection question
Hi there, I am looking for some guidance on page protection. Recently several IPs and editors have repeatedly deleted the "Recent Usage" section of the Pine Tree Flag page. This section now has multiple reliable sources cited, namely journalists and photojournalists, as well as linking to a short posting by the commentator Andrew Sullivan about the flag's recent use.
One IP making these deletions repeatedly calls these paragraphs "communist propaganda" and "hate speech" in his/her edit summaries for the deletions. This anonymous editor is not using the Talk page, which does have a discussion started on recent use of the flag. Neither this anonymous user or the other deleters are elaborating on their rationale. A national news article about the events at the US Capitol on Jan. 6 2021 linked to this wikipedia page which may have increased its traffic.
A request to semi-protect the page based on deletion of reliably sourced information temporarily was just rejected. The reasons given by the admin who rejected the request were that the citations include a link to a blog (the Andrew Sullivan opinion piece) and that a content dispute should be in the talk section.
If the Sullivan link is removed would it be worth it to make another request to try again to get this page temporarily semi-protected? Should I have indicated the reason for the request was vandalism instead of removal of reliably sourced information? I have never tried to protect a page before. It's kind of discouraging if the only option is to just keep reverting the deletion of actually factual and relevant content. Thanks in advance for any insight. What’s the point of archiving references and how do you do it?
Can someone explain to me why people archive references for Wikipedia article and how do you do it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikieditor6557 (talk • contribs) 04:38, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Wikieditor6557: the Wikimedia foundation (and Wikipedia) do not archive references. This is done by the Internet Archive, which is an entirely separate organization. The internet archive has a system called the "wayback machine" that crawls the web and captures snapshots of web pages that do not disallow it. You can explicitly request it to archive a particular page, and it will do so if allowed. The point of all this is that pages disappear on the web for various reasons. You might choose to request archiving for a page if you are concerned that the page will not remain in a stable location on the web. -Arch dude (talk) 05:59, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Wikieditor6557: We have a help page for this at Help:Archiving a source. I was unaware until I read it just now that we have a bot that asks the Wayback Machine to archive all new references in articles. However, we do not appear to have a bot to automatically add the archive URL to our references. I suspect that such a bot would be unworkable because there are too many potential problems that require human intervention. -Arch dude (talk) 06:21, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) @Wikieditor6557: The reason is that specific urls simply disappear from time to time, often when web server administrators reconfigure their web pages. This results in WP:LINKROT, and typically a 404 error, Page Not Found. Editors and bots can place {{Dead link}} by the ref as a warning. Sometimes the page has simply been given a new url, and a search within a website may find it. More often stuff just gets deleted or there is no search facility. The Wayback Machine, part of the internet archive.org may well have saved the page in the past, and Wikipedia's {{cite}} or {{citation}} templates allow the archived page to be referenced, and also refer to the dead one. The Wayback Machine[4] allows you to save individual live pages immediately, see Save Pages in the Wayback Machine. When searching for archived pages, only the blue dots work, the green and orange ones are no use.
- The main two parameters to use within eg {{cite web}} are:
|archive-url=
and|archive-date=
, along with the standard|url=
and|access-date=
. The optional|url-status=
live or =dead
determines whether to display either the current or the archive url as the first link in the ref. I get the feeling that either Good articles or Featured articles, or both, require all urls to be archived. - Here's an example:
{{cite web |title=1870 A 5 French Silver Francs (Liberty head) |website=SilverAgeCoins |url=https://www.silveragecoins.com/en/details?item=7106 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200813003740/https://www.silveragecoins.com/en/details?item=7106#expand |archive-date=13 August 2020 |access-date=30 January 2021 |url-status=live}}
, which results in
"1870 A 5 French Silver Francs (Liberty head)". SilverAgeCoins. Archived from the original on 13 August 2020. Retrieved 30 January 2021. >MinorProphet (talk) 07:01, 30 January 2021 (UTC) - (ec) @Arch dude and Wikieditor6557: IABot can add archive links to article(s). It's a bit clunky to get back to the user page after logging out, so I saved the toolforge url as a link on my own user page. Cheers, >MinorProphet (talk) 19:23, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
Draft or sandbox?
When a user wants to create a page is it better to create it in the form of a draft or in the sandbox? Dr Salvus (talk) 08:08, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Dr SalvusDr Salvus (talk) 08:08, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Dr Salvus. There isn't a whole lot of difference, except that stale drafts are deleted after six months. So, if you are a good faith editor who works slowly, your personal sandbox space is best. I have been editing since long before draft space was created, so I use sandbox space instead, with no problems. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 08:31, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- The only other consideration I can think of, Dr Salvus, is that using the draft space might be easier for a collaborative effort, if you can identify other editors who might wish to chip in at the early stage of article creation. You can find such potential collaborators via WP:WikiProject Council/Directory, for example. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:34, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

- We have articles about all countries but around 60 countries don't have a portal, e.g. Algeria, Angola, Ghana, Mongolia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Sudan, Yemen. Portals are not meant to be exhaustive. They require volunteer editors to create and maintain them. This is often done by editors from the country but we have few Ethiopean editors. If you are interested in civilly discussing your concerns or any ideas you have for changes to Parler that you have independent sources for, please start a discussion on the article talk page. If the sources in the article are being summarized accurately, you will need to discuss your concerns with the sources themselves to get them to issue retractions. Columns
Hi all, previously it used to be possible to arrange long lists of things into columns, using templates such as {{columns-list|colwidth=20em}}, {{reflist|20em}}, {{refbegin|20em}}
etc. I distinctly remember once sorting List of people from Gloucestershire into 4 columns, although it wasn't popular. Now it seems that none of these tricks work, and everything has been forced into a single column. I find that scrolling through 100 refs and 50 sources at the end of an article is particularly tedious. Could anyone please explain what might have happened? I use ancient Firefox 47 on XP. Is it something to do with mobile? Is it going to stay like this? Cheers, >MinorProphet (talk) 10:34, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- @MinorProphet: The problem is almost certainly the age of your browser; see mw:Compatibility#Browsers. Using Firefox 85.0 on Windows 10, the list at List of people from Gloucestershire reformats itself into one, two or more columns dependent on the width of the window, as do the many references in long articles such as Bill Gates. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:43, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- @MinorProphet: (edit conflict) It depends on the available screen width. List of people from Gloucestershire uses a width of
30em
per column. 30em are about456px
on my device, which means that two columns fit into my viewport. Because the number of columns is calculated on the client side depending on the available screen size, I can't give you a definitive way of how to create 4 columns. That being said, Firefox 47 is realy ancient and very likely has known vulnerabilities, the same goes for Windows XP, for which the last regular update was released in 2008 (!). I don't know if Windows XP /Firefox 47 is still secure, but I doubt it. Victor Schmidt (talk) 10:51, 30 January 2021 (UTC)- @John of Reading: and @Victor Schmidt:, thanks very much for your helpful and swift replies. I have a huge wide-screen monitor running at at 1366 x 768. Until relatively recently (a few months ago) I could do a Ctrl+Scroll which produced the desired multi-column effect, but now it doesn't. One day I might upgrade from XP, I am one of the 1% of all PC users that have it. I was in IT for 20 years, but after a stroke 10 years ago anything to do with PCs except using them fills me with dread. Anyway, I have had an intense dislike for all versions of Windows since Vista. I used to be familiar with Linux, maybe I might try installing that, since you can install FF on it. Hmm, now where did I put that spare hard drive...? Categorisation question
A further question about Vyborg railway station (1913). Does it belong in Category:Former buildings and structures in Finland or in Category:Former buildings and structures in Russia?
The background for this is:
- The station was built in 1913, when Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland, not yet independent.
- The station was part of independent Finland for 24 years from 1917 to 1941.
- The station was destroyed in 1941 by Soviet troops. It doesn't exist any more. At that time it was still in independent Finland.
- Vyborg itself was ceded to the Soviet Union as part of their demands after the Continuation War had ended.
- Vyborg remains in Russia to this day. Russia has never had any intention of returning it.
So is this a former building in Finland or a former building in Russia? JIP | Talk 17:41, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- Can't it be both? Schrödinger's railway station? MinorProphet (talk) 18:34, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

- OK, so I added it to Category:Former buildings and structures in Russia. But I don't think it should go to Category:Demolished buildings and structures in Russia as it was not demolished, it was destroyed. JIP | Talk 23:42, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

- Another option for creating an archive of an online source is archive.today. I use it when the Internet Archive isn't able to save a copy of a source. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:26, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Marked a small content edit as minor. Can the "minor" tag be removed?
I opened an account to make an edit to a page to add a quantity that was missing. It seemed minor to me, so I marked it as such. Afterwards, I read the definition of Minor Edit on the wiki and find that since I added content, it was not minor. When I look at the "History" page, I don't see a way to alter my edit comments. Is there a way for me to edit my revision category to correctly label it as a standard edit? — Preceding unsigned comment added by FCwikiEdit (talk • contribs) 20:14, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- @FCwikiEdit: There is no way to undo the "minor" tagging after you saved the edit. An alternative procedure is described in the 4th bullet point in Help:Minor_edit#Things_to_remember. Victor Schmidt (talk) 20:30, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
Recently created page not shown in Google search
I realize that Google is separate from Wikipedia, but this is a query about how they interface. The BLP page Yaniv Iczkovits was created as a draft on 11 January and moved to article mainspace on 26 January. Its Wikidata item was created in March 2013, and there's an earlier article in the Hebrew Wikipedia. Searching the name in Google in Hebrew displays the Hebrew Wikipedia link, but still nothing appears in Google when searching the name in English. What will change the latter outcome? -- Deborahjay (talk) 20:45, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Deborahjay: Patience ;-) All new mainspace pages, no matter if they went through AfC, are noindexed until they either 1) they are marked as patrolled by the Wikipedia:New pages patrol folks or 2) they have been in mainspace for 90 days (whichever comes first). And even when Googlebot finally is allowed to index the page, it still takes him some time (up to a few hours) to notice that he is now allowed to do so. Why does wikipedia support having an encyclopedia use definitions that do not align with their past articles?
React (web framework) is by definition not a web framework. "many web frameworks provide libraries for database access, templating frameworks, and session management, and they often promote code reuse.[1] Although they often target development of dynamic web sites, they are also applicable to static websites.[2]" - Web framework ?
There are also under Framework: Software framework, a reusable set of libraries or classes for a software system or subsystem Web framework, for development of dynamic websites, web applications, and web services
List of JavaScript libraries would also suggest that React should be listed under "DOM (manipulation) oriented" section by the tool's use case.
There seems to be no supporting documentation to suggest that React is in fact a framework, let alone a Web framework. It could be considered a library for DOM manipulation and would fit with the "a well-defined interface by which the behavior is invoked" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_(computing) definition.
However React could not be compared to .NET Framework Spring Framework or Next.js or Sails.js ?
React on it's own can only build a single page HTML webpage; however, does not offer a framework (by wikipedia nor academia definitions) for providing development of dynamic websites, such as serving webpages or routing addresses.
It would seem harmful to continue to have React listed as a web framework, let alone a framework by wikipedia's own definitions. Does this seem to be the cases? If not, why is React a Web Framework?

- Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state. If those sources are being summarized inaccurately, or you have your own independent reliable sources with missing or improved information, please offer them on the relevant article talk pages. 331dot (talk) 08:22, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
- Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state, if that is the case why are their definitions not aligning? Seems dangerous without updating the priorly mentioned documents. So how is their contributions being accepted when they contradict the currently accepted independent reliable sources? If there is no continuity on their use of internal wiki citations why is that not an option to report for at least lacking continuity between reference utilization? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jsframeworkdev (talk • contribs) 08:36, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
- Jsframeworkdev Wikipedia does not have a single authority to "report" things to- as I said, you may discuss your concerns on the relevant article talk page. If reliable sources disagree as to something, then the community should determine how to best summarize them, giving due weight to the proportion of sources that offer particular viewpoints. 331dot (talk) 08:40, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
- Do not move or rename a page by copying/pasting its content, use Wikipedia:Requested moves if you want another title, this one was decided at Talk:React (web framework)#Requested move 9 August 2019. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:22, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Jsframeworkdev: English evolves, and techno-English evolves at a dizzy pace. Editors generally use the terminology used by their sources, so when a term's definition changes or is used differently by different sources, Wikipedia cannot easily maintain consistent definitions across all of the affected articles. This is further complicated by the global nature of the English Wikipedia, where the same term means different things in different places. See supercomputer and SUV as examples of change over time and in different countries. In some cases it is useful to explain the differences in the article most associated with the term, and then explain the precise intended definition in any article that needs precision that uses the term. -Arch dude (talk) 17:43, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Editing Attempt to Christine Lahti's Article
OOOPs! Sorry, I confess that I do not know how to edit correctly. I was in no way trying to vandalize Ms. Lahti's sight. I saw the play back in 1988 with her and Christopher Reeve, and I noticed it was not mentioned in her theater credits. I'll admit I did a botched attempt at editing to include the play Summer and Smoke. I'll take your advice and practice in search box. - @Aquatic Ambiance: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (films)#Between films of the same name says: "add the year of its first verifiable release (including film festival screenings)". I have investigated it carefully, added [6] a good Reuters source [7] from the 2007 premiere, and moved it [8] to Bordertown (2007 film) with a detailed summary: "Correct year. It was once scheduled for 2006, some poor sources claim that year but many reliable sources from the time say 2007 Berlinale was the premiere. No good source found for 2006". The Google search Bordertown premiere 2007 Berlin finds many good sources. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:36, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
- @PrimeHunter: Thank you! Only thing left now is the deletion of Bordertown (2006 film). Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 19:52, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Aquatic Ambiance: That should only be considered if Special:WhatLinksHere/Bordertown (2006 film) shows no articles. I have updated two navigation templates but the change hasn't propagated to all the articles yet, and some articles link it in their own source. We usually keep redirects after moves, and some sources do claim 2006 so users may use that year in searches for it. I have added {{R from incorrect title}} to it. This means Wikipedia:Moving a page#Moving over a redirect would now require an administrator, reducing the risk of another wrong move like [9]. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:13, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Twice in the last few days, I've seen articles that contain intro text that reads something like "Stylized in all caps" or whatever. The two examples are Sophie (musician) and Drivers license (song) with all caps and all lower case, respectively. The articles don't make any effort to actually use that style. Nonprofit organization disclose COI
Hello!
I am writing a Wikipedia page for a nonprofit organization I volunteer at. I checked the requirements and we fit them regarding the amount of credible sources.
I am wondering if I need to disclose that I volunteer there? Is it a conflict of interest? I will be sure to remain objective and keep a neutral tone about what we do.
Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by WikiSpitfire (talk • contribs) 16:02, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- WikiSpitfire If the organization compensates you in any way(be it money or something else), that falls under the paid editing policy. If you are just a volunteer for the organization, yes, it would be a conflict of interest that you should disclose, especially if you were asked to write an article(not just a mere "page") about this organization.
- Please keep in mind that a Wikipedia article about your organization should summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about it, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable organization. Press releases, interviews, announcements of routine activities, and the organization website, all are not acceptable for establishing notability. Wikipedia is interested in what others say about the organization, not what it says about itself. 331dot (talk) 16:14, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)Hi @WikiSpitfire: I would say that you should disclose that you volunteer there. It can be on your user page as you have done here: just a simple message that you volunteer at a nonprofit, and use the {{UserboxCOI}} template, just so other editors can see your connection to it. If you need more help with COI editing, some pages that may be of interest to you are: Wikipedia:Help available for editors with conflicts of interest and Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. Also, if you want to write an article about that organisation, I suggest first reading Help:Your first article, and then using the Article Wizard to write it.
