Welcome!
Hello Brooklynite! I noticed your contributions and wanted to welcome you to the Wikipedia community. I hope you like it here and decide to stay. You are welcome to edit anonymously; however, creating an account is free and has several benefits (for example, the ability to create pages, upload media and edit without one's IP address being visible to the public).
As you get started, you may find this short tutorial helpful:

I just wanted to thank you for calling my attention to the problem at the tutorials, and for your excellent research showing the extent of the problem. Also just to say - you appear to be a smart and articulate person, and I would love to recruit you to be a registered, regular editor here. Maybe you have your own reasons for wanting to be unregistered, and if so I respect that. But you could do so much more as a registered editor; you could create articles and post on semi-protected articles and a lot of other added functions. Furthermore, you are actually LESS anonymous posting as an IP, because the IP displays your geographic location, which a username doesn't. Anyhow, think about it. -- MelanieN (talk) 17:27, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
- I have been its just I try to limit how much time I spend on various online activities. It seemed kind of silly to create an account if I'm going to frantically edit once in a blue moon and then go dark for a month or two, and maybe even frustrating to others because people will leave me messages and I won't respond for a month, actually sometimes on facebook it's more like half a year. The other thing is I really don't need any more spam e-mails from yet another online account. But I have been thinking about it and maybe I'll create an account using a dedicated new email address and post a message saying I'll just be around every so often. 74.73.230.232 (talk) 17:35, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
- Whatever works for you. We all have a Real Life and that has to take priority. But there is no requirement as to how active you are; we are all volunteers and do as much or as little here as we choose. You can disappear for a year or two, and when you come back your account will still be active. (Just don't forget your password.) Wikipedia will NEVER send you spam emails; this is a nonprofit organization, the WikiMedia Foundation; it doesn't try to sell you stuff and it does not sell its mailing lists. As for people expecting you to be online and answer messages, you just have to put {{Busy}} on top of your user talk page to let people know that "This user is busy in real life and may not respond swiftly to queries." Yes, some people do create a special Wikipedia email account (gmail is free after all). My only warning: editing here can get to feel so rewarding (I'm adding to the sum of human knowledge!) that you get hooked. -- MelanieN (talk) 18:16, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
- P.S. About you being unable to edit at the Help Talk page: See what I'm saying about the advantages of being registered? 0;-D -- MelanieN (talk) 18:26, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
- Well that's good to know, thanks for taking the time to be so informative. I'll be away for some weeks until Real Life gives me some time on my hands again, and then I'll decide whether to set up an account or not, but your argument is pretty persuasive. 74.73.230.232 (talk) 16:52, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
This is the discussion page for an IP user, identified by the user's IP address. Many IP addresses change periodically, and are often shared by several users. If you are an IP user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other IP users. Registering also hides your IP address. |
