The Detroit Project at the University of Michigan

A student organization at the University of Michigan with the mission of connecting the University community with the Detroit Community through active service learning. Each year, the group holds weekly programs with over 200 students volunteering as mentors in schools, churches, and non-profits in the Brightmoor and Southwest neighborhoods of Detroit. Also, every April the group brings over 1,000 volunteers for a one-day service-learning event known as DP Day.

As of Sept. 21, 2006, The Detroit Project is applying for 501(c)3 non-profit status.

Also known as "The DP," the organization was founded in 1999 by the University of Michigan Circle K, another campus service organization. [1]

The Detroit Project by Americans for Fuel Efficient Cars

An ongoing project to inform American citizens about the disadvantages of SUV driving and to lobby automakers to start producing automobiles that are more fuel efficient, in order to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. It is headed by Arianna Huffington.

The Detroit Project is part of Americans for Fuel Efficient Cars (AFEC), a nonprofit group dedicated to decreasing America's reliance on foreign oil. AFEC was co-founded by columnist Arianna Huffington, film producer Lawrence Bender, environmental activist Laurie David, and movie and TV agent Ari Emanuel.

AFEC mounts citizens ad campaigns aimed at getting the Detroit automakers to build cars and SUVs that are more fuel efficient, thereby encouraging US policy makers to take action and reduce dependence on foreign oil. [2]
