Early life and career beginnings
Kelly Cutrone was born and raised in Camillus, New York. Cutrone graduated from Syracuse University in 1986, whereupon she moved to New York City. She originally worked for publicist Susan Blond and then followed this with a position as Director of Communications at Spin Magazine for Bob Guccione.[1] Less than a year later, Cutrone founded Cutrone & Weinberg with her former intern, Jason Weinberg. Their clients included Eartha Kitt and Mark Ronson.[1]
Cutrone has been married twice. At 21, she married Andy Warhol's protégé artist Ronnie Cutrone, and at 28 married actor Jeff Kober. Both marriages ended in a divorce.[2] Cutrone had a daughter, Ava Cutrone, in 2002.[3]
People's Revolution
Having tired of the PR life, Cutrone sold her half of Cutrone & Weinberg to her co-founder and spent a year and a half as a tarot card reader.[1] Cutrone founded People's Revolution in 1996.[4] People's Revolution is globally recognized and celebrated brand strategy and public relations firm and has represented some of the world’s most powerful brands including Valentino, Paco Rabanne, Vivienne Westwood, Thierry Mugler, Agent Provocateur, Jeremy Scott, Christie’s Auction House and many more.
On September 11, 2002, People's Revolution broke the record for the most shows produced on one day during New York Fashion Week—five—they were one of the only companies willing to produce shows on the first anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.[2]
Television
At a time when her peers were skeptical of the television industry, Cutrone accepted an invitation from American Vogue to appear on America’s highest-rated show, MTV’s “The Hills”. Within one episode Cutrone popped onto the screen and into the hearts of America selling her “Tell it like it is” brand to a new generation. Her presence on “The Hills” provided a prototypical portal into the world of fashion, fierceness, frenzy, and feminism – much like the woman herself. Within two years MTV offered her a starring role in “The City” where she played mentor and boss to Whitney Port.
Cutrone has also appeared on an episode of MTV: "True Life".
In 2010, Cutrone inked a deal with the Bravo Network where she Executive Produced her own show “Kell On Earth”, an eight-episode reality TV show about Cutrone and People's Revolution. The series followed Cutrone as she balanced running her own company, producing Fashion Weeks in New York and London all while being a single mother.
In November 2010, Cutrone signed on as a contributor to the Dr. Phil Show.[5] Cutrone, first appeared on the Dr. Phil show to publicize her book, “If You Have To Cry Go Outside”, McGraw loved her straight-talking, tough love approach and immediately signed her on as correspondent where she focused on Women’s issues.
In 2012, Kelly signed on with Tyra Banks and producer Ken Mok to serve as a judge on America’s Next Top Model Cycle 18, the ratings increased and she served as a judge for the next five years (Cycle 19 and Cycle 22).
Books
In 2010, Kelly also published her first book with HarperCollins, a National and New York Times best seller, “If You Have To Cry Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You”. The book remained on the New York Times and National Bestseller List for over 11 weeks.
In 2011, Kelly released her anticipated follow up best selling book “Normal Gets You Nowhere” and hit the road on a national book tour where she would sign books to hundreds of young women and gay men literally shutting down the stores at 1:00 am.
