Hi. Is it possible to change my user name? just wondering. or do I need to re-register if i want a different name? thanks. --Sm8900 18:48, 4 October 2006 (UTC)sm8900 (talk · contribs)
- See Wikipedia:Changing username. New messages on talk pages should be added at the bottom by the way, it's the norm around here. Equendil Talk 19:02, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

question re article boxes
Hi. what does one call the box which appears on the right hand at the top of the page, in the following article on the Battle_of_Malaya, containing information on PAcific theater WW2 battles? Is that a template? or a portal? Also how does one add items to this box? does one simply type in a certain text tag... what would that be? also, how does one edit the box itself (whatever it's called)? Sorry to bother you with this. Where would I go to learn how to do all this? thanks so much for your help. see you. --Sm8900 20:58, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- It's called an infobox. You can find a list of them here, and WP:IBT has a how-to guide. You may also want to copy one from an article into a sandbox and play around with the different terms to figure out how it works. I can answer more specific questions for you if you need more help. -- Merope Talk 21:09, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Merope. thanks for your help. see you. --Sm8900 18:48, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
Question re subcategories
According to Wikipedia help, one creates a subcategory by putting the tag for a category on the page of that subcategory, as described in subcategory help.
However, i have visited a few subcategory pages. Some of the do fucntion this way. However there is one which apparently does not; Category:Modern_aircraft_carriers_of_the_United_States, . When i click on "Edit this page", the name of the category does not seem to appear anywhere on the page. So now I am unclear as to how subcategories are actuallky created. Could you please help? I appreciate it.
Here are the categories which I visited: Category:Modern_aircraft_carriers_of_the_United_States, a subcategory of Category:Aircraft_carriers_of_the_United_States. Another subcategory in the same category is
- Sm8900, the reason that you can't see categories on Category:Modern aircraft carriers of the United States is that its categories are added by templates. When you edit Modern aircraft carriers of the United States you can see the following code:
-
- That means the category is using Template:cathead modern aircraft carriers of the. It gives the template the country's name as an input. Here is what you see when you edit the template:
- Modern aircraft carriers of the {} include all aircraft carriers designed, built, or operated in the {} during the period from the end of the Cold War (approximately since 1990).
- <includeonly>
-
-
-
- </includeonly>
- The template puts all of those things onto the category page automatically and substitutes the input ("United States") for each "{}". You can see that it gives a brief description of the category and places it into three parent categories.
- The effect of the <includeonly> and </includeonly> is to make sure that only pages that use the template receive those categories; they make it so that the template itself isn't actually categorized. TomTheHand 21:40, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

- Let me know if you have any other questions! I'll do my best to answer them. If you're still unsatisfied with the Nimitz class aircraft carrier categorization issue, please come talk about it at the talk page for WP:SHIPS, here. We try to categorize ship class articles according to a consistent plan, so if you'd like to consistently add an additional category to class articles it's a change that should be discussed in the community. Question re user groups, chat
Hi. Thanks very much for your welcome page. I do have a question for you. how does one join a group for wikipedia contributors who are considered trusted users? do such groups exist? many thanks.
also, where does one find chat/gathering pages for wikipedia users? thanks very much. please feel free to reply on my talk page. i really appreciate your help. sorry for the simple questions. thanks. --Sm8900 19:38, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- There isn't a group for trusted users, because all users are assumed to be acting in good faith until proven otherwise. As for a chat/gathering place, you can check out Esperanza's coffee lounge. However, some users frown on chatting excessively--Wikipedia is not a messageboard, after all. A few friendly comments shouldn't bother anyone, but your primary focus in being here should be in editing the encyclopedia, not socializing with other users. Let me know if you need any more assistance! -- Merope Talk 20:29, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Received reply
I received the following helpful reply at the help page. is there more to add regarding this? Aren't there less formal chat pages around the wikipedia? That was my impression, based on some info I saw in metawiki. thanks. --Sm8900 19:46, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- You posted the same question on the Admin noticeboard; please don't cross-post (although this is actually a better place for your questions). First, if you consistently edit constructively and interact well with other editors, you will eventually join the WP group of trusted users. :-) If you want to be a trusted user with extra work, you'll have to become an Administrator, which has certain loose requirements that I don't have links to offhand. Chat/gathering pages include IRC and the Village Pump, and perhaps others have links to those. Anchoress 18:54, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

New question, 10/12/06
(Also posting at Help Desk)
When i try to edit a page, why do i sometimes get a message from my browser, asking me if I want to download a file called "index.php"? What is this for? Should I save it, or what should I do? And should I be worried about this? Anyone else have the same problem?
- I'm very sorry, no one appears to be answering your question :(. I personally don't know. You'll have to keep waiting! Someone will come along soon I'm sure. Thanks. --Alex (Talk) 21:57, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- What browser are you using? I've never gotten that. You probably don't need to, and I bet it just happens when opening a new page? I think just don't save, and edit the new page. I think. (sorry for the delay, were experiencing technical difficulties at the moment). -Royalguard11(Talk·Desk) 03:56, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- This comes up surprisingly often -- what I'm told is that you need to go into Special:Preferences and make sure that "Use external editor by default" is unchecked. Your browser is attempting to download the page so that you can edit it in an outside program, if that makes sense. I hope that's the bit of info you're looking for. :) Luna Santin 06:43, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, that would explain it. I remember now checking that option, so I have now unchecked it. Thanks for the answer. And thank you all for your help! See you. --Sm8900 16:59, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Naval heraldry
You've got it for now. I'll sit back and see what you come up with and then make some other improvements. I do ask that we focus on the traditions without adding a ton of examples. Or have each example show a specific thing. For example, I'm considering adding the seal for NCTAMS Lant (see), which features a cartoon character drawn by Walt Disney for the Navy. New question, 10/17
Hi. What's the name of feature which is the ship class box at the bottom of this article: USNS_Bridge_(T-AOE-10)? Is it an infobox? a template? how do i modify it? sorry for the basic questions. thanks.
- It looks like it is a template, and can be modified at Template:Supply_class_fast_combat_support_ship. ----Steve 21:41, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
License tagging for Image:Bridge gif.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Bridge gif.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 21:05, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
Categories on templates
It's generally a very bad idea to add categories directly to templates (as you did for Campaignbox Pacific War), since there's no limitation on what articles the template may appear on. Depending on the circumstances, the category may or may not make sense for them; it should therefore be added to articles directly (as appropriate!), rather than being included through a template. Thanks! Kirill Lokshin 16:05, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, that's what happens when a category is added like that. If you want to categorize only the template itself, you should use a noinclude tag around the category, like this:
<noinclude></noinclude>
- Kirill Lokshin 16:11, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Incidentally, you may be interested in WP:WWII. ;-) Kirill Lokshin 16:21, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Question, 10/24/06
Why is this article, Pacific War (be sure to scroll to bottom, obviously), shown as needing expansion? . Can't find any such tag within the article. Could it be that it is attached to one of the templates? How would you suggest i remove it? thanks. --Sm8900 18:43, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- It is (at least) this section which is tagged as a stub in need of expansion. --pgk 18:47, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Heraldry by Country
Hi, I noticed you added List of coats of arms of the United Kingdom and dependencies to Category:Heraldry by country, and also to the heraldry by country template. There seems to be a bit of confusion. This category is supposed to be for articles about how the use of heraldry differs from country to country (i.e. for a given country, who can use coats of arms, how they are regulated, distinctive features of coats of arms of that country etc). It isn't supposed to be for articles about coats of arms of different countries. Those can be categorised under Category:Coats of arms by nation. The list of coats of arms of the UK... article was already in Category:British coats of arms which is a subcategory of Category:Coats of arms by nation. I've reverted your changes. --Dr pda 17:57, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi. What is the tag to use to hide a table of contents?

Also, by the way, how would I have found this information by searching? i used the "help" checkbox to search the help pages, but I couldn't find it. how does one find help information regarding a table of contents, and also regarding tags? I know I saw a "cheatsheet" somewhere. thanks.

need help
Why does it seem impossible to find any wikiprojects through regular searches???? How would I find these? I tried and tried everything I could think of. thanks very much. --Sm8900 17:04, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
- Try Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory and Category:WikiProjects. —PurpleRAIN 17:08, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
- P.S. I found this by typing "WikiProject" into the search box and then following a couple of links. If that didn't work for you, it may be that your default search preferences aren't searching in the Wikipedia: namespace. You can check this by clicking my preferences at the top right of any Wikipedia page, then clicking the Search tab. You can also set namespace preferences on a per-search basis by checking the appropriate namespaces at the bottom of the Wikipedia search page. —PurpleRAIN 17:13, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
finding things
help me I am having a lotof trouble finding things. First of all, how does one access the advanced search page? Whenever I do a search, i get a whole bunch of checkboxes with the search results. Is there a way to access these checkboxes easilyin general?
Also, why can't I find the page on "user boxes"? I know there is one, but I was totally unable to find it, either by searching or using the index. hope this can be clarified. thanks.
1. Under My Preferences, click on the "search" box, and you can specify which search boxes will be clicked by default when you do a search.
2. You may find Category:Wikipedia userboxes to be helpful.

note for users
help with ww 2 article please
Hi. could some of you guys please go over to the World War 2 article? There's currently a proposal there by only two users to rewrite most of the article, mainly to shorten it. I'm very concernred that only two people could rewrite an entire large article, consisting of dozens of people's work, without any underlying consensus. It seems to me that this would mean the removal of the work by many people by a small handful of users, mainly to attain what they consider the "correct" article length. So I'm disturbed that this is happening without any underlying consensus. i'd feel a lot better if a few more people could come over to the article, and take a look. Thanks. --Sm8900 04:12, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- You've already left a note at WT:WWII, which is the best place for that sort of thing; please don't randomly add it to every other page you can find. Thanks! Kirill Lokshin 04:17, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- Major changes are always subject to consensus (whether before or after the fact); but the WWII article has been a severely problematic one for a long time now. In any case, I've left some thoughts on Talk:World War II; maybe they'll be of some use. Kirill Lokshin 04:49, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Consensus decision-making rewrite coming soon
howdy . you're getting this message because you have made a meaningful contribution to Consensus decision-making in the last couple of months. This note is to inform you that i have done a complete rewrite of the article, basically from the ground up, and will be installing the rewrite sometime after 22:00 mst (gmt -7)
i decided to undertake this rewrite because the current article had some notable shortcomings in my opinion, most notably:
- lack of references: whole sections of the current article are unreferenced
- section balance: the amount of detail on some sections was out of step with the detail level on other sections. for instance 'timing' is as large as 'key principles'
- run-on writing: some sections succumb to rambling, while other sections are quite concise to the point of being terse.
all of these problems are inevitable in a project written by a group of people with different areas of expertise and writing styles.
my rewrite is designed to address these issues. most notably i have aimed to make the article more concise -- put more content in less words as it were -- and to make sure that everything is effectively sourced. i have also pretty much completely re-sectioned the article in an attempt to flow from general down to specific.
i have given this notice to you as a 'heads up' that this change is coming. i realize that you have invested a lot of effort into the existing article and i want to make sure that you are ready to make the edits you feel are necessary once my rewrite goes 'live'.
i also intend to submit the new article for peer review shortly after posting it. i think that the feedback will help us all drive this piece forward, hopefully to at least ga status! -- frymaster 23:46, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
