About Wikipedia project
Hello, professor!
I would like to choose "Honjok" as my project.
Honjok is a kind of people who do something alone like a person going to a theater alone or a person eating alone in a restaurant.
I think the reason why these kind of words exist in Korea is that Korea is collective culture so doing something alone is a little bit strange or new for Korean culture.
There is ko:혼족 in Korean Wikipedia. Can I translate this one to English? I saw many students translating English one to Korean one.
In ko:혼족, it has no information about social influence or cultural influence so I can expand them while translating into English. Or I can write new one about Honjok.
Qkrthdussla, It is an interesting choice, but the article already exists in English at Honjok. That said, you can expand such articles, but I am unsure if there is enough material to expand them for the full project. It may be better to chose a different topic, while you can also expand Honjok in English and/or Korean for some extra credit. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here05:05, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
User:Piotrus, I did not know Honjok already exists in English Wikipedia. I should have searched Honjok. I only searched "Honbob" :( ...
Then I would like to choose "Watcha" as my subject. It is Korean streaming service like Netflix. It is one of the most popular streaming services in Korea.
Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus, yes, I think some major Korean newspapers have covered the company because of Covid 19 which make ott services more important.
Or I can expand Neflix page in Korean Wikipedia (ko:넷플릭스) by translating English one to Korean one. For now, English Neflix page is way more expanded than Korean one. Would you tell me which one is better? --Soyeon Park05:35, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Qkrthdussla, If there is coverage about the company, go ahead and give it a try, just keep in mind Wikipedia needs to provide objective facts, and have to avoid advertising language. So for your sources, you cannot use press releases and other material from the company itself. As for Netflix, that topic has already been chosen for translation by your colleague Kim Sungil, so I am afraid it is not available. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here08:20, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus, I am so sorry that I have asked much more questions than other students. This may be my last question about the subject. I have searched Watcha to check how much articles and newpapers are about it. I think there are more press releases than articles and newspapers about Watcha. So can I translate and expand game streaming service Twitch or social network service Instagram to Korean one? I think ko:트위치 or ko:인스타그램 does not have enough information as English one. --Soyeon Park06:04, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Deadline 3 : Wiki project topic selection (Shinhee Kim, Minkyo Jeong)
Hello, professor. I wanna tell you about the formation of a team for main wiki project and the topics. The team members are Jeong Minkyo, Kim Shinhee, and we are planning to do one English wiki and one Korean. I’m leaving a message on behalf of the team, and if you give us an feedback, we'll check it out together. : )
English Wikipedia Topic : Housing patterns of people in their 20s and 30s in Korea
Reason for Selection: Currently, housing problems in South Korea cause housing types such as "sharehouses" or "one-room" among the younger generation. We would like to take note of this.
Korean Wikipedia topic : Up-cycling (Korean, ‘새활용’)
Reason for Selection: it was considered a notable social phenomenon as a new alternative to the use of disposable products and the seriousness of environmental problems.
Hello, professor,Piotrus. I'd like to explain what you said.
There seems to have been an error in our expression. It is regrettable that what we intended was misrepresented.
We are going to work on a project about "Housing patterns of people in their 20s and 30s in Korea." So, it's not about the population born in 2030, it's a project about current young adult generation in Korea.
Currently, housing problems in South Korea cause housing types such as "sharehouses" or "one-room" among the younger generation. We would like to take note of this and proceed with the project. Because it is about the current housing patterns of young people, it is expected to be possible through finding out existing academic and news materials, not new research. There seems to be no problem with originality because it is about the current phenomenon. I wonder if it would be okay to do it this way.
Please check our topic again and give us feedback. : )
Kyokyoyaaaaa, Ah, now I understand. The idea is very good, as long as you can find reliable sources for it. I recommend you submit the list of such sources to me soon (it is required for the outline deadline anyway). However, it is also a small section of the (very poor) article on Real estate in South Korea. Perhaps it would be better to reconsider your topic as writing about the 'Real estate in South Korea' in general, in which you could have a section about the 'Housing patterns of people in their 20s and 30s in Korea'? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here06:09, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Piotrus Hello, professor! I understood what you said, and when I checked the article or thesis on the related topic, I thought it would be a little difficult for us to proceed. So we decided to change the subject, and the newly set topic is "Korean Proverbs." When I looked up related information, I think we could organize the folklore characteristics related to Korean proverbs by investigating the type and origin of Korean proverbs. Academic papers related to the study of proverbial types, such as ethnicity, were also found. I look forward to hearing from you if I can proceed with the changed topic. Thank you. :) Shinhee Kim (talk) 10:51, 27 March 2021 (UTC), Kyokyoyaaaaa talk💬10:53, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Eunjin Jung, Chanmi0618 Thank you for updating me on your progress. The sources look good. When adding Korean sources to English Wikipedia, please use both Korean (Hangul) and English (use the 'translated title' field to translate the title). Also, please add proper names of the newspapers (Kyunghyang Shinmun not news.khan.co.kr etc.)
Jiwoo2020, Better, but reviewing your edits, I noticed that while you did correctly add a reference to the paragraph that beings with "Choi majored in aerobic dance..." you also removed another reference from an earlier part of the article, and deleted the section heading 'personal life'. I have therefore restored the previous version. Please try to add your reference again, this time without removing any other existing content. You are halfway there! Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here05:46, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The other is an English article about the "Welcome to Video" case.
The "Welcome to Video" case is a case in which Korean operator Son Jeong-woo traded video clips of children's sexual exploitation through the website of the Dark Web.
There is a Korean article about this, but there is no English article.
So I will create and edit a new document.
I added a new topic to my own Wikipedia sandbox(citation). I'm worried that I didn't fully understand the assignment yet, so please check if I did it correctly.
And I edited a total of 20 edits last week and this week. Can you check it only if I put a link to all the articles I edited..?
Pkccccj, Good start! Your sandbox looks correct. To complete Deadline 3 assignment, please add a reference to a live article (outside the sandbox). Then you can tell me which article you updated and I will tell you if it was done correctly. Regarding your weekly edits I can see them here. Your edits are helpful. In [9] you should change the external link to an internal link. Good job uploading a picture (File:BaeDDuck.png). You can get more credit points by adding a proper category to it (I discuss categories in one of the future videos). Keep up the good job! Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here06:39, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I wish to change my Wiki project from 'Translating two English articles' to 'Creating one English article.'
I am planning to chose one and inform you before the Week 5 Deadline! May I? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seoeunsu19 (talk • contribs) 18:43, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Lee ye han, Your edit at [10] watch technically (code-wise) correct, but YouTube is not a reliable source, and linking a music video itself is not considered a proper way to reference articles (see also WP:PRIMARY) so you edit was reverted by another editor. Please try to add a reliable reference to an article (hint: it should be based on text, not video). Your edit on Korean Wikipedia is better ([11]). Good luck with your future edits! Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here06:42, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As a result of my search, I deleted it because I couldn't find any articles or documents that could prove that I was going to have a concert in Japan. --Subin3754 (talk) 09:47, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I finished weekly wiki edit tasks. I completed a total of 20 last week and this week, so please check it out.
Anything wrong, please tell me then I will modify it! Have a good day :) Thank you! Shinhee Kim (talk) 09:06, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Professor, I added a case to my Wiki project and wrote a quote. Did I do the assignment correctly?
The part I added is at the bottom of the document.
EggSushi (talk) 09:33, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ivisy6952, Unfortunately, there were several problems with your edits there and they have been undone by another volunteer. The problems are 1) Namu Wiki is not considered a reliable source and cannot be used as a reference in Wikipedia 2) your reference was a bare URL and was not formatted with a citation template. Please try again, adding a reference to a reliable source (newspaper/book/magazine/journal) and formatting it correctly. Good luck and let me know when your make up edit is ready for a review! Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here04:40, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed that there were some problems in the process of carrying out the assignment, and I corrected them. I modified the URL to the correct form and used a Korean article as the reference. Please check the link above again! Thank you always. Have a nice day, professor! --Ivisy6952 (talk) 07:24, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Piotrus, For something as simple as a definition of GDP I think we can find something a little more accessible to our English readers than a Korean language newspaper. MrOllie (talk) 13:03, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
MrOllie, Elegant solution, thank you :) On a side note, do note that one of my concerns here is to explain best practices to the new (student) editors. Too often they may not realize what they did wrong or how they could do things better unless we explain it to them in detail. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here14:06, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I thought it would be a good idea to add Korean articles to translate English articles into Korean. However, in the future, I will try to find more suitable materials. Thank you!--Ivisy6952 (talk) 03:55, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Woo-Giyeon, I see [16]. The reference is formatted correctly, but please explain which part of the paragraph does the text support? The reference you added is about the British Parliament, which is not that relevant to the section you referenced. Best, please quote here the Wikipedia text that you are referencing, and then the text from the website you linked that supports it. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here03:46, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I finished Deadline 3-2
Dear professor,
My first article chose an extensible article, so when I chose the second article, I chose to create an entry.I Finished Deadline 3 in my second article this week. (Moving out of the sandbox and add an inline reference outside the sandbox.): https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%96%B0%E9%97%BB%E5%AD%A6%E5%8F%B2
Jinsin chen, Good job starting your translation in the Chinese Wikipedia namespace, although I am not sure if their Manual of Style allows links to English Wikipedia. Good job with your edit, but please note that for the weekly edits, your edits have to be on articles other tha your m ain project. Good job with your blogging! Finished Weekly Wiki Edit(Kim Yoon/User name: BBam BBam)
BBamBBam, For this week, I only see a single edit you made here. If I missed anything, please link the pages you edited. It is a substantial edit, with a reference, and therefore I would count it for more than a single edit, but please note that's the weekly assignment asks for '10 edits', so I recommend you make more edits. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here04:03, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
BBamBBam, I am afraid I do not see any reference in your Korean Wikipedia sandbox that you linked above. Also, please note that to complete the assignment, you need to add a reference to a live article (outside the sandbox). Then you can tell me which article you updated and I will tell you if it was done correctly. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here04:01, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
OMG, I added references but didn't press the 'publish' button! So, of course, you wouldn't have seen anything sorry:0 I corrected it! Could you check it again? --BBamBBam (talk) 06:04, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Professor~! I have a quesition, so I ask something~!!
Dear Professor Piotrus
Hello Professor!
I'm Young-Joo, Park in "Collective Intelligence"
I put some images like this
Wikipedia said this should "My own image", but I can't get this image myself, so I take this image another site and take modify a picture like adding filter effect and so on...
If possible, I'd like to post a photo of myself, but I can't take this picture
Capoco1234, I am afraid that uploading modified images is not allowed. According to copyright, the modification does not give any ownership of the original image, and as such, the image needs to be deleted (ping User:Masur, User:-revi). You can only upload images that you have taken or created yourself, or that are in the public domain or otherwise are freely licenced. If you want to uploaded a photo of someone, found on another website, you need to contact them for permission which they need to forward to Wikipedia volunteers reviewing copyright issues. See commons:Commons:메일 양식 for the text you can use to send them and that they'll need to send to Wikipedia if they want this photo to be used here. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here04:25, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
oh! Thank you for your help!
I must deleted picture and change another image!
Sorry to disturb you but I have been working tirelessly for two months now on the article 'Sigismund III Vasa' and I was wondering whether you can copy edit it (check any mistakes, restructure sentences, grammar etc.). All the references I have included are published book sources with attached page numbers. I have still the 'Legacy' section to do but other than that it is almost complete. My goal is to eventually nominate it and upgrade it to a GA or perhaps FA status (fingers crossed). Oliszydlowski (talk) 12:40, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Kyokyoyaaaaa, Ah, yes. Those are good, particularly here, but in [17], consider the rules for external links. We don't generally add links - such as to the companies websites - in the article body. Links in the article body should be only for other Wikipedia articles. The place for any external links is in the both section of the article called 'external links', so I suggest you fix your edits accordingly. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here04:07, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I finished the assignment for deadline 3 (week 4) -WANG XIAOLING
Hello Professor, I’m Wang Xiaoling of collective intelligence, I finished the assignment for deadline 3 (week 4). This is the link: https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Zheng_Shuang_(actress,_born_1991)&diff=1014633603&oldid=1014633421. I also completed 10 Wikipedia task edits this week. In addition, I edited Wikipedia 30 times. Can I get extra credits? Wikipedia has been edited 40 times in total this week. Also please check the blog post about extra credits. Regarding the extra credits task for blogging, I wrote about my thoughts on the book "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life", but the professor left me a message saying that my blog was wrong(This is a reply to my blog link: https://socwiki2021.blogspot.com/2021/03/w3-thoughts-on-reading-presentation-of.html). Can I not get extra credits for writing other books?
WANG XIAOLING995, Good job adding referenced content here, and your other edits look good too. For future extra credit, if you are interested in Chinese film controversies, maybe you could translate the article zh:赵立新 to English?
Do note that per MOS:BIRTHPLACE, information on birthplace is preferred in the body of the article, not its lead. Some of your edits have been reverted; please move the birth place information to the lower section.
Regarding your blog, the blog itself is very good, but you posted it in the wrong blog (the book is for our 'Everday Life' class, but you blogged about it in our 'Collective Intelligence' class blog). If you got invited to the wrong blog, please send me an email about this and I'll invite you to the correct blog so you can copy your blogs there. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here05:49, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus, 1) I can translate zh:赵立新 to English Wikipedia. How long is the deadline? 2) Thank you professor for your feedback, I will pay attention next time! 3)In the syllabus:"b) you can blog about the question poised in the syllabus for a given week (for some weeks it’s the same as a) above, but for some weeks it is different). The structure of the blog post should be similar to that of a), also you are welcome to incorporate other materials than simply the assigned readings for next week (you can also discuss the past readings, lectures, and anything else you find on your own). "
It seems that can write other books to get extra credits. I don’t know that this book is also available in other classes of the professor. I think this book is very famous and interesting so I want to write my thoughts about this book. I have written 4 blogs about this book. Can I get extra credits? Or if write a blog about this book, its won’t get extra credits? thank you!^^professor. Have a nice day~ WANG XIAOLING995 05:57, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
WANG XIAOLING995, There is no deadline for extra credit projects (well, the deadline would be the end of the class in late June). You can get extra credit for blogging about the book, just note that the credits will be applied to the class this book is relevant to (so if you blog about Goffman's Presentation... then the credits will be awarded for the Everday Life class). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here17:10, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus, 1)Can I get extra credits by writing articles in other books through my blog? 2)If I make additional credits for Wikipedia editing, and the editor makes a mistake and is withdrawn, can I still earn additional credits?
WANG XIAOLING995, If they are books that are assigned reading to our course, yes. Other than that, the preferred venue to earn extra credits is to do more Wikipedia edits, as it is more productive than blogging. Regarding making an edit that was a mistake, you can earn extra credit if you acknowledge what was the mistake and fix it either directly or by making a similar edit that is not a mistake. For example, if you add a sentence that is removed because it contained grammatical errors or was unreferenced, you can get credit by restoring that sentence with grammatical error fixed and/or the reference provided, as necessary. I hope this helps! Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here02:29, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Piotrus: This week, I finished editing 10 Wikipedia content with a reference addition and also registered Wikipedia main project topics on the dashboard. Please give me feedback after checking. Thank you.--Youngsil (talk) 14:57, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Chaehyoseung, Unfortunately, this is still not correct. You now added an external link into a text; this is generally not allowed as it resembles spam - see also the friendly message & explanation another volunteer, User:Paper9oll, left for you at User_talk:Chaehyoseung#April_2021. You need to format your addition as a reference, in the form of a footnote that is not just a bare URL but specifies the author, publisher, date, title, an d so on. Please see WP:CITE and watch our course video tutorial on adding references. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here06:05, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Piotrus: Hi there, your student added Naver Search result as reference which is not consider reliable source hence this is the reason why I reverted the edit. Would recommended to use primary source or secondary source (preferably news source) instead. I have since added the supporting references to the unsourced content which was previously added by another editor. —Paper9oll(🔔 • 📝)06:27, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Chaehyoseung, I am afraid you are repeating your previous mistakes and even confirming this here ("I added external link" - yes, and this is NOT what the assignment requires - you should add a reference instead). Please stop, read the Wikipedia rules I and others linked, watch our video, and also read this talk page where many of your colleagues have reported their correct submissions (and compare them to yours). In your latest edit, already reverted by another volunteer, you have added external links (not references) and linked google search results (not acceptable) and youtube (also not acceptable). A reference should be a direct link to a newspaper, magazine or such, and correctly formatted (like described above). You can see an example of how a reference is added, correctly, here - this edit is courtesy of volunteer Paper9oll. Please study it carefully and compare it to yours [20]. Can you see the difference? You need not only to use the correct code (for references), but ensure that your references are reliable. Given that you have repeated the same error several times, I recommend that you first submit a reference in your sandbox, then I'll review it, and only then you should add it to the mainspace. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here06:32, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
[week4] Lee Yerin
Hello, professor, I'm Yerin Lee.
First of all
1. Blog posting 2. Commenting 3. Editing 10 Wikipedia topics 4. Selecting topics
I've finished, please check!
In addition, I have a question.
First of all, I finished editing 10 Wikipedia this week on Saturday, March 27th, but when I checked, the Korean editing was not recorded on the dashboard, and a small number of English compilation was deleted. In this case, do I need to edit it additionally?
Secondly, please check my article subject ko: Independent bookstores.
Dashboard tool is experiencing some trouble, but don't worry, I can still monitor your activity using other tools. Regarding the content you added that has been reverted / deleted, please check messages I and others left on your talk, it explains why some of it was removed. For example, this was poorly formatted, unreferenced and of unclear relevance. Are those official instagram accounts of Hanyang? If so, they could be added to the external links section; they don't need their own subsections. But don't worry, may of your other edits are good and have not been deleted.
Hello professor, we have finished editing the article on the subject of "Cognitive Biases" and "Women in South Korean," so please check it out.
Below is the corresponding address.
Chanmi0618, First, please in mind that this deadline is individual. Each of you has to complete it using their own account (and report it here). The edit to Korean Wikipedia seems good, but I had to undo your edit to English Wikipedia since it was not in English: [22]. Please remember to use English on English Wikipedia. Finally, please remember to WP:SIGN your posts when posting on talk pages. Please let me know if you fix the edit on the 'women in South Korea' page so I can review it again. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here13:57, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is silverline, Good job! Here are thoughts on how you can improve those edits: 1) The reference here is well-formatted, but that sentence was already referenced. Keeping in mind this is English Wikipedia, what is the benefit of the reference you added for most readers? Also, when adding Korean-language references to English Wikipedia, I suggest you see the optional 'translated title' parameter and add an English translation of the Korean title (do not remove the Korean title, both should be visible). 2) Re [23], when adding a citation to a book, please add the page number(s) for the pages you consulted. Readers who want to read more about this issue may not want to read the entire book and instead may want to look at the specific page or two which contain the relevant information.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here02:36, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Deadline3- Oh Serin
Hello, professor.
I started editing Wikipedia.
But the subject I set was harder than I thought.
It will take some time to add more content.
(I'll try to add it as soon as possible)
Could you check if I'm editing it correctly?
Ohserin, Dear Oh Serin. It's a good start, but since you want to translate the article to Korean, you should copy your sandbox to Korean Wikipedia (where you have a sandbox too). The sooner you do so the better, as technical parts like code (including references) will not copy well, so some of the work you do here, in English Wikipedia's sandbox, is wasted as you'll have to do it again from scratch on the Korean side.
@Piotrus:
Thank you for your reply. I also thanked User: Trappist the monk for helping me with my revision 'Hapkido'. The whole page is 190 pages, and the part I’ve quoted is pages 13-21. Should I correct my citation information? Also, what exactly does "volume" mean? Is it correct to write "Volume = p.190, Pages = 13-21"?
Sorry for being awkward at Wikipedia. ㅠㅠ Thank you for your help. Have a nice day :-) Hyeonyoung Lee 21 (talk) 02:30, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hyeonyoung Lee 21, Great that you learned how to send a thank you note to other editors :) And yes, please correct the information to list pages 13-21. I think it is usually not necessary to report the total number of pages (190). Nothing to be sorry for, learning how to write quality content takes time and you are making good progress! Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here02:55, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Questions about the reference
@Piotrus:
Hello Professor. Thanks for the detailed feedback on my assignment.
First, the source of information for 19 is Doosan Encyclopedia. Could it be a good reference?
JeongYoon Oh, It's a good start, but if you want to translate an English Wikipedia article to Korean Wikipedia, you should copy your sandbox to Korean Wikipedia (where you have a sandbox too). The sooner you do so the better, as technical parts like code (including references) will not copy well, so some of the work you do here, in English Wikipedia's sandbox, is wasted as you'll have to do it again from scratch on the Korean side. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here17:13, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As you answered, I copied the translation of "Vogue(magazine)" into my sandbox to a Wikipedia article in Korea. I'll also attach a link to Korean Wikipedia, so please take a look. Since you said that references are not copied well, from now on, I will translate and modify them right away in Korean Wikipedia articles, not in my sandbox. The reason why I wrote draft into my sandbox was to do deadline 4. Is my assignment completely confirmed?
I finished deadline 1 and enrolled in the dashboard system.
I'm so sorry for the late completion. I will work hard on my assignment from now on.--Seora3085 (talk) 15:29, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Byeon jung a, I assume you refer to this? The reference is good, but the content you referenced already had two other references. Try to add a reference to content that does not have a reference. Also, in that edit you added the text "(A Love Story". Note that you need to add a space before the parenthesis, and close it. Also, is this the official English name of the movie? I don't see it mentioned in Il Mare. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here17:20, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
