The USS Monongahela (AO-42) was originally named the SS Ellkay, a type T2 tanker or more specifically, a T2-A variant. The ship was built at Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. in Chester, PA as hull number 227 and USMC number 158 in 1942. The U.S. Navy took control of it the same year.
