Introduction

St. Ronan's School is a co-educational Preparatory School located near the village of Hawkhurst in Kent. It was founded in 1883 and was originally located near Worthing but moved to its present location in Tongswood Hall during the Second World War. The current headmaster is William Trelawny-Vernon. At present the school has roughly 140 boys and 100 girls, with 51 full- and part-time members of staff. It takes children from 2 to 13 years of age.

History

Sir John Vassar-Smith, Bt., was headmaster of the school for many years until his retirement in 1997. In addition to his headmaster's duties, he taught geography and mathematics. During his tenureship many of the unique traditions of the school cristallised. Some are listed below:

Whistle Games - an adaptation of football in which there are practically boundaries to the pitch and no limit to the number of people on each team. In addition there are several footballs in play at any given time.

Falklands War - a mixture of tag and top trumps. Each player is given a white piece of cloth as a tail. They are also given a slip of paper on which are printed details of their character. The characters fall into two teams which change from game to game. Generally there is a theme to each game, so that one team might consist of Greek deities and the other of Roman deities. Each player's piece of paper tells him those characters of the opposing team that he can defeat and those which can defeat him.
