Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Georgesmith1975, and welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of the pages you created, such as Floyd woodrow, may not conform to some of Wikipedia's guidelines, and may not be retained.

There's a page about creating articles you may want to read called Your first article. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the Teahouse, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{help me}} on this page, followed by your question, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Floyd woodrow, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

  • It seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. (See section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
  • It appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement of militaryspeakers.co.uk/speakers/floyd-woodrow. (See section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Conflict of interest

[edit]

Hi - I noticed that most of your edits so far have been about a couple of motivational speakers. As you can see, I just nominated your new article about one of them for speedy deletion, because it was entirely copied and pasted from a promotional website. So, I'd like to ask you straight up - do you work for that website, or are you connected with it in any way, or otherwise connected to these people? If so, you need to read a few guideline pages - there are some good links in the welcome template above, but these in particular may apply to you: WP:COI, WP:PAID, and WP:NOTPROMO. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 15:34, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Girth, thanks for your input. I'm new to WikiPedia and trying to learn the platform by doing. The new article about Floyd Woodrow was an experiment, I now understand that I have to create the page in it's entirety before publishing it. And yes, I just copied the text from a Google Search found via a motivational speaker website (that I'm not connected with in any way whatsoever I can assure you). If you can suggest a topic that needs a new page creating then I'll happily give that a go and try again. Thanjs again for your help! All the best, GeorgeSmith1975Georgesmith1975 (talk) 15:48, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Georgesmith1975, OK, thanks for that assurance. What you write about is up to you - personally, I mostly do historic buildings, with the odd historic biography thrown in, and I'm thinking of getting into writing about notable mountains. The ideal subject to get started with is probably something you're somewhat interested in personally, but not something you're passionate about (we have to remain neutral) and certainly not something you have any financial stake in. I always work up an article in draft space and only publish it when it's ready. Just be careful not to make copyright violations, even in draft space - we can't host copyvio anywhere on the site. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 16:27, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I was hoping to write about inspiring individuals who go under the radar (such as Tom Avery and Floyd Woodrow) who have achieved so much in their lives yet don't get any recognition. I've read their books and can't understand why they 're not lauded by society. Anyhoo, thanks for the pointers and I'll read through the articles provided and have another go. All the best George Georgesmith1975 (talk) 16:31, 24 October 2019 (UTC).[reply]

Georgesmith1975, if you want to write about living people, you'd do well to read WP:BLP, and have a read of WP:NOTABILITY too. Basically, you can write about them, but you must have sufficient reliable, independent secondary sources to support the article - not books by them, or websites promoting them, but stuff that other people have written about them; you also have to write neutrally and dispassionately, without trying to puff up their significance. If you can do all that, you're good to go. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 16:44, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is likely not the right place for this. See WP:OUT. Thanks for the draft submission though. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 14:04, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would personally suggest checking out Wikivoyage. All the best. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 14:08, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sagotreespirit. I've moved the article to Wikivoyage as suggested and added several notable sources. I've also added a sentence explaining why Ski Verbier Exclusive are notable (they're the original Verbier luxury ski tour operator) in an effort to incorporate the feedback provided. Please advise if you feel this meets the criteria for a Wikivoyage article (if you can as I appreciate you may have time constraints. If any other administrators are able to offer guidance it would be very gratefully received. Thank you! Georgesmith1975 (talk) 10:32, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
