He also founded the National Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce, based in Washington, D.C., and currently serves as its executive director.[9][10][11][12] As a former member of the U.S. Air Force, Vélez-Hagan deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2012 during Operation Enduring Freedom.[13][14][15]
