Kiril Ivanov Tenekedjiev[1][2][3] (Bulgarian: Кирил Иванов Тенекеджиев; born 18 December 1960 in Varna, Bulgaria) is a professor in quantitative decision analysis and subjective statistics. His strongest research achievements are in statistical pattern recognition (developing innovative applications in medical sciences, reliability engineering, systems engineering and technical diagnostics), as well as his work on fuzzy-rational quantitative decision analysis and ribbon-risk analysis.

Kiril Tenekedjiev is the first of two children to Ivan Kirilov Tenekedjiev[4] (a mechanical engineer), and Tatiana Museevna Tenekedjieva (a French language high school teacher). He has a younger sister.

Kiril's upbringing was entrusted to his grandparents on his father's side. He has often shared his deep love for them and the dear memories he has with them. His grandfather, Kiril Georgiev Tenekedjiev,[5] was a very respected medical doctor in Varna, Bulgaria and Kiril was named after him. Kiril's grandmother, Dimitrichka Tenekedjieva (originally, Dimitra, but loved being called "Dimitrichka"), was an outstanding erudite and worked as a high-school teacher while raising her two sons (Ivan Tenekedjiev and Georgi Tenekedjiev[6]). She was a graduate of a French lyceum. She was methodical in shaping Kiril as a hard working, ambitious, organized and determined individual.

Kiril was passionate for sports since early age, with particular interests in water polo. He played for Cherno More water polo team[7] (most of the time with the junior team) in Varna, and was also selected and played with the Junior National water polo team of Bulgaria in his late highschool years. Starting his two-year military service in 1979, prior to university, he retired from active sports. His coach in water polo, Ivan Popov, played an important role in shaping Kiril's personality and understanding of life.

While studying at the First Language School[8] (English profile) in Varna, he also participated in school theater performances, and showed very good artistic skills. At the end of his teen years, he switched his focus from sports to mathematics, having a natural talent and inclination to mathematics since primary school. Although not active in sports nowadays, Kiril is a fan of soccer and basketball (specifically, NBA, and a great fan of Michael Jordan and Golden State Warriors). In 2007, while a Fulbright Visiting Scholar in the USA, he had the chance to again exercise his passion for water polo, this time while coaching the SUNY at Binghamton's team in water polo. Within the several months that he coached the mixed male-female team (a rare structure at that time), the team achieved its best ranking ever in its history. This experience was of particular importance for Kiril as it was a tribute to his beloved waterpolo coach from his youth. Kiril is a die-hard Liverpool Football Club fan, and also a passionate supporter of several other European soccer teams - FC Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, AC Milan, and AFC Ajax.

Kiril has two daughters. His elder daughter - Ana-Maria Tenekedjieva - is a graduate in a Bachelor of Sciences program in Statistical Science of Duke University[9] (with a thesis in Missing Data in Financial Modeling). In mid 2020, she obtained her PhD in Finance[10][11] with the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, USA. She is now an economist at the Flow of Funds section of the Federal Reserve Board. Her research interests are in financial regulation, insurance, and the intersection of political economy and empirical corporate finance. Kiril's younger daughter - Lea-Tereza Tenekedjieva[12] - completed an International Baccalaureate program with the United World Colleges in New Mexico, USA[13][14][15] and in 2019 completed her undergraduate degree in Human Biology with Stanford University, USA. She works as a Clinical Research Coordinator with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.[16] Her research interests are in biology and behavioral sciences.

Education and academic career

Kiril Tenekedjiev obtained his mechanical engineering degree (both at Bachelor and Masters degree) in ship machines and equipment from Technical University of Varna, Bulgaria in 1986. He was awarded a PhD degree in Engineering from Higher Attestation Commission of Bulgaria in 1994, undertaking his studies with Technical University - Varna. His Doctor of Sciences degree from 2004, awarded again by the Higher Attestation Committee of Bulgaria, was on a thesis entitled Decision Analysis: Utility Theory and Subjective Statistics.[17] He was promoted to Full Professor[18] again by the Higher Attestation Committee of Bulgaria while still employed by the Technical University of Varna, in 2008.

Kiril started his academic career in 1986 right after graduation from university. He worked as Researcher (operator) with the Ship propellers and cavitation unit of the Bulgarian Ship Hydrodynamics Center, Varna, Bulgaria (a research institute with industrial research orientation in mechanical engineering, hydrodynamics and cavitation). He worked on several research tasks there, related to his interests in mechanical engineering. After a year he moved to Technical University of Varna in 1987, where he was lecturer in the Department of Resistance of Materials. Following were series of academic positions with other sections of the Technical University of Varna from 1987 to 2011 (such as Department of Ship Machines and Equipment, Department of Technique and Technology for Water and Air Protection and some others), eventually spending some 12 years with the Department of Economics and Management, at that time part of the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Ecology. In 2011, he took a role as a Professor with the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Information Technologies of the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy-Varna (Bulgaria). Since 2018, he is affiliated as a Professor in Systems Engineering with the Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania (Australia), after several fixed-term and casual activities there.

Kiril has research interests spanning over quantitative decision analysis, subjective statistics, simulation modelling, mathematical modelling of biochemical reactions,[19] statistical pattern recognition and technical diagnostics. His overarching research topic is intelligent systems. He has found application areas to his novel works in medical research (biochemistry, blood coagulation, cardiology, cardio surgery), transport management (maritime transport, inland waterway transport), and business (economic decision analysis, risk management). Kiril served as visiting lecturer with the Medical University of Varna, and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He has conducted specializations with the State University of New York (USA), Semmelweis University (Hungary) and Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan), to name a few. His work is also associated with a multitude of international lecturing, research and specializations in Europe, Asia, North America and South America. Since 2013, Kiril served as representative of Bulgaria to the TFEU Program Committee "Smart, Green and Integrated Transport", Framework Program "Horizon 2020". Since early 2020, Kiril is the Chair of the Tasmanian subsection of the IEEE Victorian section, Australia. At the same time, he initiated his role as Division Committee Member for the Tasmanian Division of Engineers Australia. His publication records contains 250+ publications, in five languages, with a total impact factor of 116+, total citations of 1000+ and h-index 15 (Google Scholar).

Kiril is very active in his service to profession. He reviews project proposals for the Australian Research Council (ARC), the Czech Science Foundation, the Fulbright Bulgarian-American Commission for Educational Exchange, the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), and the National Science Fund of Bulgaria. He is a member of the Editorial Board of International Journal of General Systems, Journal of Advanced Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Informatics, the International Journal of Computational Intelligence Systems, Applied Sciences (section Robotics and Automation), Journal of Sustainable Development in Transport and Logistics, and holds some other associate editor roles with national and international journals. He reviews manuscripts for Information Science, Safety in Extreme Environments, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of Applied Mathematics, Abstract and Applied Analysis, etc. Kiril's research profile and reviewing activities gained him the standing of PUBLONS Top Reviewer for 2020.

Over the span of his career, Kiril has participated in some 54 research projects. These projects were funded under the Framework Programs of the European Union, the Welcome Trust, JSPS-Japan, World Bank, the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), URBACT II, Hungarian Science Foundation (OTKA), INTERREG III B, Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T), etc. Kiril also coordinated the ERASMUS and ERASMUS+ program in the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy-Varna, Bulgaria between 2012 and 2015. He is actively supervising research students at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate level, with some of his students funded under the ARC Antarctic Gateway Partnership, and the ARC Research Training Center for Naval Design and Manufacturing.
