Robyn Wilkins (born 1 April 1995) is a Welsh Rugby Union player who plays fly-half for the Wales women's national rugby union team and Gloucester Hartpury. She made her debut for the Wales national squad in 2014 and represented them at the 2021 Women's Six Nations Championship.

Club career

[edit]

Wilkins began her rugby career at eight years old, when she joined Pyle RFC. After a brief hiatus between the age of 11 and 15, she picked up the ball again for Pencoed RFC, before playing for Ospreys Under 18s and Ospreys Seniors, and then representing Cardiff Blues Women while studying at Cardiff University.[1]

At the age of 18, she signed with Llandaff North RFC, where she played between 2013 and 2019, and then went on to represent Worcester Warriors during the 2020-2021 Premier 15s season. In February 2021, Wilkins signed with Gloucester Hartpury, where she currently plays.[2]

International career

[edit]

Wilkins made her international test debut at the age of 18, playing inside centre in the 2014 Six Nations against Italy, where she scored two penalties.[3]

At just 20 years old, Wilkins earned her seventeenth cap in Wales’ win against France; the Welsh Women’s first win over the French team since 2008.[4]

She has played in 33 Women's Six Nations matches and represented the team at the 2014 and 2017 Women's Rugby World Cup. Wilkins has earned 50 caps for Wales, reaching the 50 cap milestone against Ireland during the 2021 Women's Six Nations Championship. She has also played for the Wales Women's National Rugby Sevens team.[5]

Personal life

[edit]

Rugby has always played a central role in Wilkins' life. Her father, Gwilym Wilkins, was a distinguished player himself, playing for Aberavon and Bridgend RFC and later Wales, where in 1994 he earned a cap playing against Tonga on the wing.[1]

Wilkins attended Porthcawl Comprehensive School from 2006 to 2013, before joining Cardiff University, where she graduated in 2016 with a degree in biomedical science. After a period spent working as an account manager for a medical imaging firm - a role that saw Wilkins travelling regularly between Birmingham and Wales - she now teaches science Bassaleg Comprehensive School in Newport, while continuing her rugby career.[6]
