Ireland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany with the song "Lipstick" performed by Jedward. The song was selected by the Irish public through the national final Eurosong 2011 competition, organised by the Irish broadcaster, Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ).
Before Eurovision
Eurosong 2011
Eurosong 2011 was the national final format developed by RTÉ in order to select Ireland's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011. The competition was broadcast as a special edition of The Late Late Show held on 11 February 2011 and hosted by Ryan Tubridy.[1][2][3] The competition was broadcast on RTÉ One as well as online at the RTÉ website and the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv.
Format
The competition differed from the previous three years. A mentor system replaced the public entry submission process, which five music professionals each selected one entry for the competition. A combination of regional jury voting and public televoting determined the winner. Six regional juries had an equal stake in the final result and results of the public televoting had a weighting equal to the votes of three juries.[4]
Competing entries
The five mentors responsible for each selecting a song and artist for the competition were revealed on 26 November 2010. The mentors were:
Caroline Downey-Desmond – Director of MCD and event producer
Twin duo and The X Factor UK contestants Jedward were confirmed as one of the finalists on 2 December 2010.[5] The Vard Sisters, Nikki Kavanagh, Don Mescall and Bling were confirmed as the remaining finalists between 10 December 2010 and 14 January 2011.[6][7][8][9][10] The five finalists were revealed on 28 January 2011.[11] The five songs were presented on 10 February 2011 during the RTÉ Radio 1 programme The Derek Mooney Show.[12]
Jedward qualified from the second semi-final, placing 8th with 68 points.[15] The public awarded Ireland 6th place with 78 points and the jury awarded 10th place with 66 points.[16] In the final Ireland came 8th with 119 points, with the public awarding Ireland 10th place with 101 points and the jury awarding 6th place with 119 points.[16][17] It was Ireland's best result since 2000 when they finished 6th. It was also Ireland's first time receiving 12 points in a final since Eurovision 2003, they received 3 sets from Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
