Stillwater is a city located in Washington County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,143. It is the county seat of Washington County6. Stillwater is part of the Twin City Metro Area

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.9 km² (7.3 mi²). 16.8 km² (6.5 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,143 people, 5,797 households, and 4,115 families residing in the city. The population density is 903.7/km² (2,340.0/mi²). There are 5,926 housing units at an average density of 353.6/km² (915.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.52% White, 0.32% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,797 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% are non-families. 24.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $57,154, and the median income for a family is $72,188. Males have a median income of $49,158 versus $33,680 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,163. 4.3% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.6% of those under the age of 18 and 5.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
