Graham Layton
Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Graham Layton (18 May 1917 – 7 March 1999) was a British Pakistani Army officer, businessperson, and philanthropist who co-founded the Layton Rahmatulla Benevolent Trust.[1]
As a businessman, he co-founded MacDonald Layton Company one of the most prominent construction companies in Pakistan.[2] The company started as a boat-building business, at West Wharf Yard in Karachi.[3] They soon expanded the business into house building and construction under the name of McDonald, Layton & Company (MLC).[3]
Early life and career
Layton was born on 18 May 1917 and was brought up in North London.[2] He was educated at Wellingborough School, in Northamptonshire.[2]
In 1942, he was commissioned into the British Indian Army.[2] In 1944, he was promoted to the rank of Major.[2]
In 1982, he divested his investment in the McDonald, Layton & Company and retired to the United Kingdom.[3] In 1984, he acquired the Pakistani citizenship.[2]
In 1990, he awarded with the Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam.[2] In 1994, he was awarded CBE in the New Year's Honours.[2]
