Marlain Guy Veal (born April 21, 1996), is an American basketball player for Bnei Herzliya in the Israeli Basketball Premier League.[1]
Early life
Veal was born in Gretna, Louisiana, to Patrick Roublow and Swylita Veal.[2] He has five siblings.[3] He is 5-9 (175 cm tall), and weighs 145 pounds (66 kg).[4]
He attended Helen Cox High School ('15).[5] Playing for the basketball team, as a senior Veal averaged 15.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.[6] He was named Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s (LSWA) 5A Player of the Year, NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune Large Schools Player of the Year, District 8-5A MVP. All-State, All-District, and The New Orleans Advocate All-Metro.[7]
College career
Veal attended Southeastern Louisiana University ('19), majoring in communications.[8][9] As a sophomore playing for the Lions in 2016-17 he ranked 10th in the conference with 14.5 points per game, fifth in assists (4.5 apg), seventh in steals (1.8 spg), and 10th in 3-point field goal percentage (.400) and assist/turnover ratio (1.2).[10] He was named third-team All-Southland Conference, and honorable mention All-Louisiana by the LSWA.[11]
As a junior in 2017-18 Veal set the Southeastern records for single-season assists with 207 and for a career with 449, was second in single-season steals (66) and third in career steals (164), led the Southland Conference in assists (6.1 apg) and was second in steals (2.1 spg), was fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.8), and ranked 17th nationally in steals and 18th in assists.[12] He was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I All-District 23 team, was named first-team All-Southland Conference, Southland Defensive Player of the Year, and to the All-Defensive Team.[13]
As a senior in 2018-19 he led the conference in free throws (160), was fifth in free throw percentage (.825), steals per game (1.8), and assists per game (4.5), and seventh in points per game (15.9).[14] He was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I All-District 23 team, All-Southland Conference (First Team), and Southland Conference All-Defense.[15] Veal was the school's all-time leader in assists (595) and steals (220).[16]
Professional career
Veal played for Final Spor Gençlik in the Turkish TBL in 2019-20, averaging 23.1 points, 7.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.[17]
For the 2020-21 season Veal is playing for Bnei Herzliya in the Israeli Basketball Premier League.[18]
