This article claims John Phillips fired Michelle Phillips for having an affair with Gene Phillips. The Mamas & the Papas gives a different story, in which Michelle Phillips had an affair with Denny Doherty, and then got together with Gene Phillips after the affair was outed.
One of the articles appears to be incorrect, but I don't have an authoritative source. Does anyone else?
- It was Gene Clark of The Byrds that Mama Michelle Gilliam had an affair with and not Gene Phillips. Gilliam's affair with Papa Denny Doherty occured in late 1965 and was very brief. Gilliam and John Phillips had been separated for months in the spring and summer of 1966 and she was living with Gene Clark on Lookout Mountain at that time.
