Welcome to MedievalWiki! No one is in charge here: everyone is welcome to contribute, create a Wikithon under the MedievalWiki banner, and join the participants list - provided your editing intentions align with MedievalWiki aims!
Please feel free to make changes and additions to the format and content of these pages, and use the Talk page to leave questions and comments.
This project was established to create a permanent project building upon Wikipedia:Meetup/MedievalWikiIWD2018, User:Whistlaw/Jan_28_Editathon 2015, and Wikipedia:Meetup/MedievalFeminist 2014.
MedievalWiki Aims
Anyone who is committed to redressing the gender and racial imbalances on medieval Wikipedia is welcome to join the MedievalWiki project.
This project is all about:
- Improving references to scholarly work by Black medievalists and medievalists of colour, women and non-binary medievalists in articles related to medieval studies
- Creating and improving biographical pages for Black medievalists, medievalists of colour, women and non-binary medieval scholars and artists who use medieval texts, objects, or themes in their work / create works of medievalism.
- Improving coverage of references to theories and interventions indebted to critical race, gender studies, queer studies, and sexuality studies in medieval historical Wikipedia articles is also firmly within the scope of the project.
We encourage anyone interested in the medieval past and modern medievalisms - whether archaeologists, palaeographers, historians, linguists, artists, philologists, literary critics, or anyone else - to edit Wikipedia with this focus.
Everyone in the MedievalWiki community is encouraged to hold Wikipedia training and editing sessions, and to add to and make use of the resources list compiled here.
Foremothers and sister projects
We are excited to be following the example set by the Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship (thank you for laying a path to follow).
Thanks also to a whole host of other feminist and academic organisations around the world who have created documentation to follow, or provided friendly help! Thanks especially to the Women's Classical Committee.
Please do add to this section if you know of other projects/ events to document!
Forthcoming events
Anyone is welcome to organise a wikithon under the badge of MedievalWiki (if your editing aims are in the same spirit as those outlined here!). Please add forthcoming events below. You can find details of Past Events here.
- Leeds International Medieval Congress - 6th July 2021, 2-4pm BST
In this workshop, we will introduce participants to the wonderful world of Wikidata, and participants will then have time to contribute to the task of narrowing the gender and race gap on Wikipedia. Unfortunately due to huge interest from conference attendees we have to limit spaces to folks who have Leeds IMC tickets this time, but we hope to run another open-to-all Wikidata event soon!
Outcomes
We have a dashboard that collects outcome stats here https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/campaigns/medievalwiki/programs
