Jesse Palter (born in Detroit, MI) is an American singer-songwriter and recording artist. Palter's work ranges from pop to jazz, with multiple areas in between. Jesse released her debut album, "Paper Trail", on Mack Avenue Music Group July 19, 2019.[1] That same month, "Paper Trail" was named LA Weekly Album Of The Week, stating "Palter takes us on a real journey — one minute she sounds like she’s wailing the title track to a Disney adventure that hasn’t been made yet, the next she could be sat alone in a coffee shop open house. That mix of majesty and intimacy makes for a winning formula."[2] On October 2, 2020, Palter independently released her single "Better Days", written and self-produced in quarantine which "explores the magic of artistic collaboration that can occur and bind the creative despite the limitations of time and distance".[3] Medium.com referred to Palter as "part of the next generation of elite pop music artists. A gifted songwriter and a versatile vocalist, Palter burst onto the scene with a naturally skilled voice that ranges from powerful and soulful to sweet and gentle".[4] Palter is also a mental health advocate and ally, and has penned pieces published in Thrive Global, Grammy.com[5] and has spoken on panels for the Recording Academy on music and mental wellness.[6]

Biography

Palter was born[7] in Detroit, Michigan to a musical family, and raised in the suburb of West Bloomfield.[8] It has been noted that Palter was "singing before she could talk". Palter began piano lessons at the age of seven and spent her earlier years immersed in musical theater. Palter attended a middle school that specialized in the performing arts, where she began to write music and also learned to play the oboe and then the trumpet. Palter attended The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor [9] as a Jazz & Contemplative Studies Major.

Career

Palter began singing at a young age, performing in theater productions as a middle-school student. At age 13, Palter began to write her own music and was connected with legendary singer/songwriter/producer Andrew Gold.[10] Palter went to Nashville to collaborate on original material with Gold and put together a demo which garnered interest from various labels. Around age 15, she began working with the Grammy Award-winning production duo the Bass Brothers, known primarily for their work with Eminem.[11]

She launched her jazz career as a teenager, performing in Detroit area clubs including The Firefly Jazz Club in Ann Arbor (now defunct), and Baker's Keyboard Lounge and Cliff Bell's, both in Detroit.[12]

In 2009 Palter co-founded, along with pianist Sam Barsh, the electronic pop group Jesse Palter and the Alter Ego, later renamed Palter Ego.[13] The group has released two EPs and two albums.

Palter relocated to Los Angeles in 2010 to further pursue her career as a writer and performer.

On October 19, 2018, Palter released a five song ep on the Artistry Music division of Mack Avenue Records. The songs are autobiographical. In early 2019, Artistry Music followed The Paper Trail EP with the single "Sever The Ties" and a full-length debut album.[14]

Awards and nominations

Palter has been nominated for nine Detroit Music Awards, of which she has won six.

She won the Outstanding Jazz Vocalist category in 2006, 2008 and 2009, where she was named a Special Honoree.[15]

Palter also received three nominations at the 2011 awards.[16]

She was selected as one of Music Connections Hot 100 Live Unsigned Artists and Bands of 2020[17]
