- The events - train derails at around 2:30 AM, rupture of tank containing anhydrous ammonia - The failure of the Emergency Broadcast System - Inability to get message out on radio stations: the cause according to Eric Klinenberg "Fighting for Air" - the radio stations which were supposed to deliver information where owned by out of state companies and didn't adequate (or any) staff on duty. There were no local DJs on the air.
