It revolves around the life of Sulaiman Malik, spanning from his childhood to middle age, where he rises to prominence among the people living in the coastal regions, in the fight against the political corruption in the region. The film is based on real-life incidents about the increase in land acquisition cases, particularly in the coastal area. [3]
Fahadh Faasil plays the titular character Sulaiman Malik, with Nimisha Sajayan and Vinay Forrt in prominent roles, while Joju George, Dileesh Pothan and Indrans amongst others in supporting roles.[4] Principal photography began on 3 September 2019 and completed on 18 January 2020, with major portions had been filmed across Thiruvananthapuram and Lakshadweep. The music and film score is composed by Sushin Shyam, whilst cinematography handled by Sanu John Varghese. The film's theatrical release was postponed multiple times due to COVID-19 pandemic, and was later opted for a digital release through Amazon Prime Video on 15 July 2021.[5]

Production
Development
Following the positive critical reception of Take Off (2017), Mahesh Narayanan started working on his second directorial with Dulquer Salmaan in the lead.[9] Dulquer who took a break from acting in Malayalam films, ever since the birth of his daughter Mariyam, had expressed his interest to act in the film, which eventually marked his comeback,[9] and Mahesh began pre-production works on the untitled project in September 2018, with music director Gopi Sundar and cinematographer Sanu John Varghese being a part in the technical crew.[10] But, Dulquer prioritised his commitments with Oru Yamandan Premakadha and Mahesh decided to cast Fahadh Faasil and Parvathy Thiruvothu in the lead roles, whom they eventually worked with the director in Take Off.[11] Varghese retained his position as the cinematographer, while Sushin Shyam was announced as the composer, who revealed the film's title as Malik.[12] The filmmakers announced an ensemble cast of Biju Menon, Nimisha Sajayan, Vinay Forrt, Jalaja, Dileesh Pothan and Indrans being a part of the project,[13] while Menon was replaced by Joju George in December.[14] It is made under an estimated budget of ₹25 crore becoming Fahadh's expensive film in his career till date.[13]
Characters
Reports had claimed that Fahadh plays a role of a politician in the film,[2] whose character was revealed as Sulaimaan Malik. His role was rumoured to be similar of Michael Corleone in The Godfather (1972) or Velu Naicker in Nayakan (1987).[15] But Narayanan claimed that his role is based on a real-life person who passed away in 1986. Since the plot is based on land acquisition cases in the coastal regions of Kerala, Mahesh had stated that "The film revolves around a place where there was a resistance against this constant threat of displacement of a minority community, and a person who was responsible for making his people rise up", further describing his character as "someone who emerged as a leader among the community".[16]
The film revolves around Sulaimaan's character spanning from the age of 21 to 58, and Fahadh shed 10 to 15 kilograms,[17] for the younger version of his character.[15][4] The aged character Sulaimaan featured in the first look released on January 2020, is inspired by Faasil's grandfather.[18] The team experimented different looks for the character, which took a lot of time, so Mahesh referenced the looks of Fahadh's grandfather with the help of his old photos and videos.[19] The team believed the "biggest challenge" of Fahadh is to shoot the younger portions, as he had to lose weight.[20] The team had shot the entire film in reverse, with the elder portions first, though it was difficult for the supporting cast members.[21]
Filming
The film was launched with a principal photography on 3 September 2019 in Kochi.[13] The first schedule of the film completed on 10 October 2019,[22] and second schedule subsequently began later on 24 October 2019. The cinematographer Sanu John Varghese and production designer Santhosh Raman, recreated an entire coastal town in Kochi. During the second schedule, a huge part of the film has been shot at the sets of Kalamassery and the other part of the film has been shot in Thiruvananthapuram in a specially constructed set designed by the art department to replicate the period of 1980s.[16] Since, the scenes required a large amount of crowd and to handle them in a real location is not easy, the team had recreated the design and set it in a fictional place, so they can shoot in a controlled environment.[16] Hollywood stunt choreographer Lee Whittaker, has been announced as a part of the technical crew.[23] The principal shooting of the film was completed on 18 January 2020 and post-production works began soon after its completion.[24] The team took two months for visual effects and 95% of post-production works were completed before the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in India.[25] The team resumed the activities later on May 2020.[26]
Release
Malik, unlike my recent OTT releases (C U Soon, Irul, Joji) which were planned for home viewing right from the beginning, this film was designed for a theatrical experience and it was the only film had ready when theatres would open to 100%. The decision has been collective and I personally request everyone to see it in the best interest of the film.
The film was earlier scheduled for theatrical release on April 2020,[2][4] but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India.[28] Unlike other South Indian films, which opted for a digital release during the pandemic, the producers of Malik had waited for a theatrical release refuting huge offers from leading over-the-top media service providers.[29][30] On December 2020, a new release date of 13 May 2021 (Eid-al-Fitr weekend) was announced,[31][32] with Mahesh Narayanan added "the film was meant for a theatrical release and never meant for a digital release. As the circumstances were favourable, the general view in the industry is that the audience will start coming to theatres by April and May looks like a good time for Malik’s release".[33] The team screened the film to the officials of the Censor Board, before the announcement of the film's release, with Malik being one of the 46 Malayalam films being screened for censors, post-lockdown.[33]
The theatrical release was postponed again due to the second wave of COVID-19 spread.[34] Due to the uncertainity of reopening of theatres since the rise of COVID-19 cases across Kerala,[35] producer Anto Joseph reinstated the plans for direct-to-digital release of Malik, and the company's other film Cold Case, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran by selling the rights to Amazon Prime Video for ₹14 crore (US$1.6 million)[36][37] Actor Fahadh Faasil, too shared a heartfelt post on social media handles citing the decision as "collective" and also due to the approval of the other cast, crew and technicians who worked for more than a year for the project.[27][38] Thus, Malik became the second big-budget film from Mollywood to have a direct online release, following Drishyam 2.[39] On 1 July 2021, Amazon Prime Video announced the release date as 15 July 2021.[40][41]
