Marlain Guy Veal (born April 21, 1996) is an American professional basketball player for Bnei Herzliya in the Israeli Basketball Premier League.[1] He plays the point guard position.[2]
Early life
Veal was born in Gretna, Louisiana, to Patrick Roublow and Swylita Veal.[3] He has five brothers and sisters.[3] He is 5-9 (175 cm tall), and weighs 145 pounds (66 kg).[4] He said: "A lot of schools said I was too small.... That's why I play with a chip on my shoulder."[5]
He attended Helen Cox High School, and graduated in 2015.[1] Veal had transferred to Cox from McDonogh 35 before his sophomore season.[6] Playing for the Cox basketball team, in his senior year Veal averaged 15.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.[3] He was Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s (LSWA) 5A Player of the Year, NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune Large Schools Player of the Year, District 8-5A MVP. All-State, All-District, and The New Orleans Advocate All-Metro.[3]
College career
Veal attended Southeastern Louisiana University, majoring in communications.[1][3] He also had scholarship offers from Xavier University of Louisiana, the University of New Orleans, and the University of Texas–Pan American.[6] As a sophomore playing for the Southeastern Louisiana Lions basketball team in 2016-17 he ranked 10th in the Southland Conference with 14.5 points per game, fifth in assists (4.5 assists per game), seventh in steals (1.8 steals per game), and 10th in 3-point field goal percentage (.400) and assist/turnover ratio (1.2).[3] He was named third-team All-Southland Conference, and Louisiana Sports Writers Association honorable mention All-Louisiana.[3]
As a junior in 2017-18 Veal set the Southeastern records for single-season assists with 207 and for a career with 449, was second in single-season steals (66) and third in career steals (164), led the Southland Conference in assists (6.1 assists per game) and was second in steals (2.1 steals per game), was fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.8), and ranked 17th in the nation in steals and 18th in assists.[3] He was selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I All-District 23 team, was first-team All-Southland Conference, Southland Defensive Player of the Year, and to the All-Defensive Team.[3]
As a senior in 2018-19, despite being slowed by a season-long torn meniscus injury, Veal led the conference in free throws (160), was fifth in free throw percentage (.825), steals per game (1.8), and assists per game (4.5), and seventh in points per game (15.9).[7][8] He was a preseason All-Southland Conference team selection, and was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I All-District 23 team, All-Southland Conference (First Team), and Southland Conference All-Defense.[9][3] Veal was the school's all-time leader in assists (595) and steals (220).[3] He also performed a dunk at the 2019 College Slam Dunk Championship, a video of which was circulated by ESPN, in which he was picked up, thrown over three people, and finished upside down — he calls it "Bug on a Windshield."[10][11][12]
Professional career
Veal played for Final Spor Gençlik in the Turkish TBL in 2019-20, averaging 23.1 points, 7.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.[4]
