Anant Yashwant Khare, also known as, Nanda Khare (1946-) is a novelist in the Marathi language [3]. His original (and translated) writings cluster around a variety of historical, anthropological and scientific themes. Some of his prominent novels are ‘antajichi bakhar (अंताजीची बखर)’, ‘bakhar antakalachi (बखर अंतकाळाची)’ and ‘udya (उद्या)’. He is known for his consistent advocacy of a rationalist wordlview grounded in the modern sciences.
Educational and Professional Career
Khare completed his primary and secondary education in Nagpur. After passing his matriculation examination in 1961, he studied Civil Engineering in the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. After obtaining his B.Tech. (Honours), he was employed in various capacities in a private engineering firm (Khare and Tarkunde) until 2001. He was one of the chief engineers in the construction of the Ujni dam on the Bhima river.

Awards
- In 1985, Khare’s manuscript ‘ज्ञाताच्या कुंपणावरून’ received an award from Granthali Publications.
- In 1995, his science fiction novel ‘वीसशे पन्नास’ received the G.R. Dodke award from Vidarbha Sahitya Sangha.
- In 2010, the collection of essays ‘कहाणी मानवप्राण्याची’ received the Bhai Madhaorao Bagal award from the Government of Maharashtra.
- In 2014, he received an award from Shabda for his novelistic writings.
- In 2015, his novel ‘उद्या’ received the Lokmangal Sahita Puraskar.
Since Khare had arrived at a personal decision not to accept any further awards, he declined the Sahitya Academy Award given to his novel ‘उद्या’ in 2020. He clarified that there were no political motives behind his refusal.
