Animal Kingdom is an American drama television series developed by Jonathan Lisco. It is based on the 2010 Australian film of the same name by David Michôd, who is executive producer for the series. The series features a 17-year-old boy, who, after the death of his mother, moves in with his estranged relatives, the Codys, a criminal family clan governed by matriarch Smurf. Ellen Barkin portrays the leading role of Janine "Smurf" Cody, played by Jacki Weaver in the 2010 film. Other main cast members include the rest of the Cody family.

- Ellen Barkin as Janine "Smurf" Cody, the tough matriarch of the Cody family and J's estranged grandmother. Smurf is protective of her family and presents a borderline-incestuous love towards them. She later comes down with terminal cancer and plans an elaborate heist to die on her own terms and take at least Pope with her. However, it fails and she is shot dead by J, who fulfilled her wish. (seasons 1–4)
- Scott Speedman as Barry "Baz" Blackwell, Smurf's adopted son and Joshua's estranged biological father. He is a leader in the Cody's robberies. He later ends up being shot to death by Mia for framing Smurf. (seasons 1–3)
- Shawn Hatosy as Andrew "Pope" Cody, the oldest Cody son, who is mentally disturbed and considers suicide. He reappears after having served three years in Folsom State Prison and had an obsessive infatuation with Baz's girlfriend Catherine. He is attached to Catherine's daughter, Lena, and takes it upon himself to give her a good life, until he puts her into the foster care system to protect her from her family's criminal lifestyle. He is always suspicious of new or known people entering the Cody household.
- Ben Robson as Craig Cody, the middle Cody son, who has a predilection for drugs and extremely risky activities. He eventually has a child with his on-again/off-again girlfriend Renn called Nick.
- Jake Weary as Deran Cody, the youngest Cody son, a former competitive surfer who is gay and owns and operates a bar as a legitimate side business. Deran was in a relationship with Adrian until they parted ways for his safety.
- Finn Cole as Joshua "J" Cody, Smurf's grandson who moves in with her and his uncles following the death of his mother, Julia, who was Pope's twin sister. J is the only one who will challenge Smurf and wants to take power over her and her life.
- Daniella Alonso as Catherine Blackwell, Baz's girlfriend, and the mother of their daughter, Lena. She is smothered to death by Pope on Smurf's orders. (season 1)
- Molly Gordon as Nicky Belmont, J's girlfriend who later hooks up with Craig. She leaves town and goes back to live with her parents. (seasons 1–3)
- Carolina Guerra as Lucy, Baz's mistress from Mexico with whom he rekindles a romance after Catherine's disappearance. She is the head of a Mexican gang with her brother Marco. She is later shot dead by Mia on Smurf's orders. (seasons 2–3, recurring season 1)
- Sohvi Rodriguez as Mia Benitez, (season 4, recurring season 3) a tough young woman raised in a gang who is very rough around the edges. She later grows closer to the Cody family and becomes romantically involved with J and has a mysterious and dangerous nightlife. She acts as an assassin for Smurf on two occasions, killing Baz and Lucy for her. After having a falling out with J, she robs the family with her boyfriend Tupi and is shot dead by J in retaliation after first admitting to her murder of Baz.[1]
- Leila George as Young Janine "Smurf" Cody (season 5, recurring season 4)[2] a member of a gang of ruthless career criminals who would eventually become the matriarch of the Cody Family.
- Jon Beavers as Young Jake (season 5, recurring season 4)[2] a member of Young Smurf's gang of ruthless career criminals in 1977 and Craig's father.
- Rigo Sanchez as Young Manny (season 5, recurring season 4) the leader of Young Smurf's gang of ruthless career criminals in 1977.[3]

- Gil Birmingham as Pearce, an unflappable law enforcement officer with a dry sense of humor and more than 20 years on the job. He is constantly trying to bring down the Cody family, placing pressure on both Smurf and Adrian with no luck.[4] (Guest season 2; Recurring seasons 3–5)
- Rey Gallegos as Pete Trujillo, Mia's cousin and Smurf's longtime associate who facilitates her assassinations of Baz and Lucy as well as the kidnapping of Marco. (seasons 3–5)
- Dichen Lachman as Frankie, Billy's edgy, free-spirited, and dangerous younger ex-girlfriend. She later goes on to briefly date Craig, and employs him and his brothers in heists after Billy skips town. It's later revealed she was using Billy and Craig to get close to Smurf in order to use the Cody's for her own robbery ring.[4] (seasons 3–5)
- David DeSantos as Dennis Livengood, a DEA agent [5] who Adrian made a deal with following his arrest for drug smuggling. After Adrian flees the country, he pressures Deran to make a deal. (seasons 4–5)
- Milauna Jackson as Young Pamela “Pam” Johnson, Jake's girlfriend in 1977 who later robbed Manny's crew. (seasons 4–5)
Season 1
- C. Thomas Howell as Paul Belmont, a United States Navy Lieutenant Commander at Camp Pendleton, and Nicky's father.[6] (Guest, season 3)
- Nicki Micheaux as Det. Sandra Yates, a detective trying to bring the Cody family to justice for their crimes.[7]
- Dorian Missick as Patrick Fischer, a tough cop with a sweet spot for Catherine.[7] (Guest, season 2)
- Ellen Wroe as Alexa Anderson, J and Nicky's teacher, who works undercover with Detective Yates to try to take down the Codys. She is later arrested for statutory rape after J exposes her sexual relationship with him and foils Yates' plot to take the family down.
- Michael Bowen as Vin, a man previously incarcerated with Pope.
Season 2
- Alex Meraz as Javier "Javi" Cano, Lou's son who Smurf ran jobs with. He is the head of a dangerous gang that Smurf worked with while her sons were too young to commit crimes. He is murdered by his own crew after Smurf pays them off. Baz frames Smurf for his murder resulting in her imprisonment in season 3 before the charges are dropped for a lack of evidence.
- Jennifer Landon as Amy, an employee at a megachurch whom Pope meets and briefly dates. (Guest, season 3)
- Tembi Locke as Monica, a smart, low-key woman who is the technical brains of a criminal operation that the Codys rely on to fence their stolen goods.
- Andy Favreau as Mark Liston, a powerful businessman whom the Codys encounter at the church, and who has a fling with Deran.
Season 3
- Damon Williams as Clark Lincoln, a former motorcross rider and X Games participant who now works as an ER nurse and had a fling with Deran.[8]
- Denis Leary as Billy, Deran's drifter father who Smurf kicked out years ago.[9] (Guest, season 4)
- Phillip Garcia as Benito "Ox" Oxcama, a childhood friend of Deran's who joins his gang while Smurf's in jail. During a robbery gone bad, he's shot in the gut and ultimately dies of his wounds after a failed attempt to save his life in Mexico. Detective Pearce later reveals to Adrian that the cops found Ox's body in a Mexican landfill and they incorrectly suspect Deran of killing him.
- Mathew Fahey as Colby, one of Deran's gang while Smurf's in jail. After getting dissatisfied with waiting for Deran all the time, he leads a job early, causing Ox's death and Deran ending their friendship. He later attempts to blackmail Deran after realizing that Adrian is working with the cops, but Deran murders Colby to protect Adrian. Deran subsequently struggles with guilt over Colby's death as he is the first person that Deran has ever killed. (Guest, season 4)
Season 4
- Emily Deschanel as Angela, a recovering drug addict and Julia's best friend.[10] In season 5, she is mentioned to have been beaten to death in a drug house after vanishing, possibly due to a relapse that J caused her to suffer.
- Kelli Berglund as Olivia Dunn, a charming college student who shares a class with J. After a brief relationship, J uses her insider knowledge to pull off a major heist of a performance venue.[11]
- Grant Harvey as Colin, a violent ex-Vietnam War veteran member of a crew with Smurf from 1977 that commits armed robberies in town. He also dated Smurf and helps her become a better criminal. He is also Pope and Julia's father. Colin is shot in the leg during a shootout with the police and quickly bleeds to death.[12]
- Lucca De Oliveira as Louis “Lou” Cano, a member of the crew that Smurf joins with her boyfriend in 1977. He is Javi's father.
- Vinny Chhibber as Rahul, a haughty billionaire who provides Craig with a heist.[13]
- James Remar as Detective Andre, a former police detective who acts as an informant for Smurf.
- Eddie Ramos as Tupi, a dangerous, money-hungry boyfriend of Mia's who is at odds with J several times. After robbing the Cody's with Mia, he is killed by Pete.[14] (Guest, season 3)
- Joseph Morgan as Young Jed, Colin's unstable brother and Pope's uncle who is a survivalist in 1977.[15]
- Chris Mulkey as Jed, an older Jed from the present. He is shot dead by Smurf on her suicide mission.
- Sarah Hunt as Laney, Jed's abused wife in 1977. She is the mother of his 4 sons: Odin, Jeremy, David and Mike. She is briefly mentioned by Jed in the present to be dead.
- Matt Bushell as Odin, Jed's oldest son. He's drowned by Pope. (Guest, season 5)
- Ronnie Gene Blevins as Jeremy, Jed's second-oldest son. He's choked to death by Craig. (Guest, season 5)
- Nick Heyman as David, Jed's third-oldest son. He's shot in the neck by Deran and bleeds to death. (Guest, season 5)
Season 5
- Nick Stahl as Mike, Jed's youngest son, whose life was spared by Pope after Mike's brothers were killed.

- Chelsea Tavares as Lark, the grandaughter of Pamela Johnson and Phoenix Johnson's niece.

- Diego Josef as Taylor, a teen being bullied at Pope's skate park.[17]
- Moran Atias as Detective Louise Thompson, a ruthless detective known for viciously tracking cold case killers who enters the Cody Family's crosshairs.[18]
