PAW Patrol: The Movie is a 2021 Canadian[4] computer-animated adventure comedy film based on the television series PAW Patrol created by Keith Chapman. The film is produced by Spin Master, the toy company behind the series, with animation provided by Mikros Image. It is directed by Cal Brunker, written by Billy Frolick, Brunker and Bob Barlen, from a story by Frolick, and produced by Jennifer Dodge.

It is the first of several films produced under the Spin Master Entertainment banner and the first film adaptation of the PAW Patrol series. The film follows Ryder and the pups who are called to Adventure City to save it from the evil Mayor Humdinger before he destroys the urban metropolis. The voice cast includes Kingsley Marshall, Keegan Hedley, Shayle Simons, Lilly Bartlam, and Ron Pardo reprising their respective roles from the series, and are joined by newcomers Iain Armitage, Marsai Martin, Yara Shahidi, Kim Kardashian, Randall Park, Dax Shepard, Tyler Perry, Jimmy Kimmel, and Will Brisbin in his first acting role.

The film was theatrically released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on August 9, 2021 and in the United States on August 20, 2021, both theatrically[7][8] and streaming on Paramount+ at no additional cost to subscribers. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics.

Plot

A truck driver named Gus (Tyler Perry) crashes and hangs over the Adventure Bay suspension bridge. Cap'n Horatio Turbot (Ron Pardo) comes across the scene and calls Ryder (Will Brisbin), who sends the PAW Patrol pups into action. Chase (Iain Armitage), the police pup, saves Gus.

Meanwhile in Adventure City, the PAW Patrol's arch-rival Mayor Humdinger (also voiced by Pardo) has become mayor. Knowing of Humdinger's infamous wrongdoings in Foggy Bottom, a dachshund named Liberty (Marsai Martin) calls the team. Chase says he isn't going due to him having a ‘history’ in the city when he was a puppy. Ryder convinces him to go back. The team arrive and get settled into their new headquarters. Meanwhile, Humdinger uses a device called a Cloud Catcher to clear up the weather so he can do his firework show. This goes haywire and the pups are alerted. Liberty arrives and guides them to the City Hall. They manage to take care of the situation but Chase fails to save some people. Humdinger tells his henchmen Butch and Ruben (Randall Park and Dax Shepard) to get the pups off the streets.

The next day, he also builds an extension to the subway line with a big loop-de-loop. It breaks and traps the passengers upside-down. The pups rescue them but Chase freezes and is forced to be rescued by Skye (Lilly Bartlam). Ryder suggests Chase should take a break but this upsets him and causes him to run off. He is then dog-napped by the henchmen. The team find that a lot of dogs have gone missing and Ryder links them to Humdinger. Liberty gets captured on purpose and is taken to an obedience school turned dog jail where she meets snooty valley girl poodle Delores (Kim Kardashian) and rescues Chase (as well as the other dogs).

Ryder takes Chase to where he found him and tells him he chose him because he was the bravest pup he met. Meanwhile the Cloud Catcher has gone critical and the creator Kendra Wilson (Yara Shahidi) confronts Humdinger and he destroys the remote and reveals his building Humdinger Heights. The machine unleashes a weeks load of bad weather. Kendra calls the team and Liberty is given her own vehicle and uniform. She joins the team and Ryder saves Humdinger but is trapped in the building when it falls down. Chase drives up to save him while Skye goes to stop the Cloud Catcher. Chase takes a leap of faith and saves Ryder. Skye manages to drive straight into the machine and eject before she crashes. The machine explodes and Skye flies down. Chase puts Humdinger under arrest for ‘gross negligence, public endangerment and dog napping’.

The team are given the key to Adventure City in a big ceremony. Liberty becomes an official member, fulfilling her dream at last. Ryder gets a call from Harris (one of the dogs from the dog jail) saying there's trouble at the waterfront and the pups drive to the rescue.

Production

In November 2017, Ronnen Harary confirmed that Spin Master is "currently considering whether to extend the PAW Patrol franchise into feature films at some point in the next 12 to 24 months." Animation tests were conducted in 2017 to measure how the characters "would translate onto the big screen" and the company is currently in the process of developing a film script.[9] On November 8, 2019, it was announced that Mikros Image in Montreal would handle the animation.[10] There are 250 film crews with a team of about 60 devoted to the animation. Their biggest challenge was creating high-quality theatrical animation that didn't lose the sense of the series. They were also especially interested in creating action scenes that had more of a realistic quality.[11]

Development of the film was confirmed on February 21, 2020, with Cal Brunker attached as director.[12] Production was done via telecommuting during the COVID-19 pandemic in both the United States and Canada.[13]

Producer Jennifer Dodge said, "it was important to be able to tell a deeper character story than what they've been able to do with the series." She also explained, "And to tell it in a way that a child really can understand and relate to, and maybe even their parents get a deeper meaning from it. You can have a hard day at school or daycare and you can rise above those difficulties and you can come through on the other side. It doesn’t mean you’re never scared, it doesn’t mean you don’t doubt yourself. But, if at the end of the day, you really believe in yourself and you have people around you who believe in you, you can overcome it."[11]

On October 15, 2020, Iain Armitage, Marsai Martin, Yara Shahidi, Kim Kardashian, Randall Park, Dax Shepard, Tyler Perry, Jimmy Kimmel and the newcomer Will Brisbin were announced as part of the cast.[14] On March 13, 2021, an exclusive first look of the film was shown during the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2021.[15] On May 3, 2021, the characters were revealed with their cast announced the respective roles.[16] For the role of Ryder, more than 1,000 people has been auditioned before the 16-year-old actor Will Brisbin from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, got the role.

On July 14, it was announced that Ronan Keating, Richard Arnold, Sam Faiers and Tom Fletcher were added to the cast as part of the voice cameos for the dub in the UK and Ireland.[17][18]

Screenwriter Bob Barlen described the main character to be focused on the film:

"Chase is kind of like the quarterback. Chase sort of seems like the main character, and so being able to expand and kind of have a character who fails and who has to overcome an obstacle is important. We were able to do more than the TV show time allows. Starting in Adventure Bay, you see him as that same perfect pup from the show where he’s executing things flawlessly. That’s really where we were able to expand on his backstory and create something that would be worthy of the feature film. So, you’re seeing him for the first time really ever make mistakes and mess up and come to terms with not being perfect, and then pushing through and overcoming that fear. That was really something that we were excited about in terms of telling a story."[11]

The film also represented the fulfillment of a lifetime dream for the collaborators of Bob Barlen and Cal Brunker, who had been making films together for decades. Brunker had known Barlen since they attended high school, and would make films at the same time as him later into their respective careers: "Back before we ever got a chance to make a movie, Bob and I went to Hollywood for the first time and we actually paid to go on the Paramount lot tour. You know, you get to see behind the gates. We said to each other, wouldn’t it be amazing if one day we were making a movie for Paramount? Well, we’re six or seven weeks away from our first movie for Paramount coming out. And to be entrusted with such a beloved brand for so many people and to be able to share that with the world, this is a dream come true for us. It’s been something we’ve been working towards for a long time and, and it’s a real gift."[11]

Dodge and Brunker both thought the style of the animation needed to remain true to the series but with some significant adjustments to give it a more theatrical feeling. According to Brunker, they wanted to redesign some things noticed in the movie: "The back legs of the dogs actually look and function like real dog legs and in the TV show they’re kind of more cartoony; just kind of stick legs. We felt it would allow them to move more like real dogs, and if we could push the realism of the movement, then it would make the fact that they’re doing these great big rescues and all this heroic stuff even more exciting."[11]

Although Spin Master would not reveal the film’s final production budget, the CGI animation is more polished and textured than the series, with Brunker and his team reshaping and rebuilding every character, vehicle and environment from scratch. Aside from some voice recording in Los Angeles (including recordings from most of the cast remotely) and orchestral scoring in Nashville, “95 percent of everything” happened in Canada, according to Brunker.[19]

Music

Heitor Pereira composed the score for the film. He previously collaborated with director Brunker on The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature.[2] On June 2, 2021, it was confirmed that Adam Levine will provide an original song, titled "Good Mood".[8] The track was released on August 6.[20]

Another song, titled "The Use in Trying", was announced on August 2, 2021 and released on August 10, co-written by Alessia Cara (who performs the track) and Jon Levine, who additionally serves as producer. Levine stated that "her one-of-a-kind voice weaves a beautiful song that captures the sadness and uncertainty during a pinnacle moment in the film".[21]

Reception

Box office

In the United States and Canada, PAW Patrol: The Movie was released alongside Reminiscence, The Night House, and The Protégé, and is projected to gross around $7–9 million from 2,800 theaters in its opening weekend.[36]

Critical response

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 84% based on 32 reviews, with an average rating of 6.20/10. The website's critical consensus reads: "No job's too big and no pup's too small for PAW Patrol: The Movie, which should give its youthful target demographic exactly what they're looking for."[37] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 50 out of 100, based on 12 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[38] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A–" on an A+ to F scale.[39]

Randy Myers of The Mercury News gave the film three stars out of four and said, "This old-fashioned, G-rated animated children's film (young children, that is, not teens or tweens) does everything it intends to do. And does it well."[40] Kristen Page-Kirby of The Washington Post gave the film two and a half stars out of four and said, "A better movie than it needs to be, with some neat visuals, an outstanding score and a story that, while simple, is well told."[41]

Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter called the film, "Harmless fun for its target audience."[42] Sarah Bea Milner of Screen Rant gave the film two stars out of five, saying, "Paw Patrol has enough action to keep young fans entertained, but parents will likely be bored by the dragging pace and convoluted plot."[43] Jude Dry of IndieWire gave the film a D, and wrote in her review, "While it's doubtful the humorless dirge of a movie will make enough of an impression to mold young minds in any lasting way, the critique of PAW Patrol is useful as an amalgamation of certain favorite Hollywood themes that ought to be retired."[44]

Lisa Giles-Keddie of HeyUGuys gave the film four stars out of five and said, "A relentlessly entertainment big screen outing for the familiar pups. A perfect slice of summer cinema for all the family."[45] James Mottram of South China Morning Post gave the film three stars out of five, saying, "Paw Patrol: The Movie is a solidly entertaining film for kids, with plenty of crash-bang action."[46]

Courtney Howard of Variety called the film, "Any crass consumerism is eclipsed by disarming, demonstrable themes and meaningful sentiments woven throughout the film's textured fabric."[1] Yolanda Machado of TheWrap gave the film a positive review, stating "Brunker and his co-writers find a way to deliver a multi-layered story that can grab toddlers while keeping older viewers entertained and not groaning at some propagandized messaging."[47]

Video game

A video game based on the film was announced on June 10, 2021, titled PAW Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls. Developed by Drakhar Studio and also published by Outright Games, it was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows on August 13, 2021.[48]
