Helluva Boss is an American adult animated musical black comedy web series created by Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano. The show features a different cast of characters and a different storyline than Hazbin Hotel, another show created by Medrano, despite taking place within the same universe.[1][2][3][4] As Medrano described it, while both shows share the same setting, Hazbin Hotel is about redemption and consequences while Helluva Boss follows "characters and societies that already exist in Hell" with the main focus on the interpersonal relationship between characters.[5] The pilot was released on November 25, 2019,[6] while the first episode of the first season, produced by SpindleHorse Toons, was released on October 31, 2020.[7] The first season was released exclusively to Medrano's YouTube channel[8][9] as she has done for other animations.[10][4]

Premise

The series follows the employees of I.M.P. (Immediate Murder Professionals), an imp-run assassination company in Hell, on their many different jobs.[11][12][13][14][15] The members of I.M.P. include Blitzo, the boss of the venture, along with weapons specialist Moxxie, powerhouse Millie, and receptionist hellhound Loona. With the help of an ancient book obtained from Stolas, a Goetial demon of Hell, they access the living world to complete their assignments.

The enthusiastic imp Blitzo and his subordinate employees—Moxxie, Millie (Moxxie's wife), and Loona (Blitzo's adopted daughter and the I.M.P. receptionist)—run an assassination agency called the Immediate Murder Professionals (I.M.P.). The first scene depicts the group discussing how to drum up business again after an incident in one of their missions have them a bad reputation. Some backstory is provided in the form of a flashback, where Blitzo steals a book that he uses to make a portal to the living world from Stolas, one of the Goetial demons of Hell, after having sex with him. Later, the group is shown accidentally shooting a small child named Eddie while aiming for someone else. However, I.M.P. kills and dismembers Eddie after discovering he was the right target their client wanted them to kill after all, and drops off his dismembered body in a bag to his mother on live TV.

Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Mayberry (Mara Wilson) discovers her husband is having an affair with a woman named Martha (Jinkx Monsoon). In a fit of rage, she attacks Martha and kills her husband, before committing suicide when realizing she had done this in front of her students. However, Martha survived and was praised for surviving the attack, gaining publicity and wealth. Mrs. Mayberry, now a demon condemned to Hell, hires I.M.P. to kill Martha, who is revealed to have a husband named Ralphie (Maxwell Atoms) and two children. Moxxie is hesitant about killing a mother and ruining a supposedly innocent family, so he knocks Blitzo's gun off-course as he shoots. This alerts Martha and her family, who reveal their true, villainous nature as Satan-worshipping cannibals, and proceed to chase the imps. Blitzo flees, but Moxxie is captured by the children, and Millie is knocked unconscious by Ralphie.

Blitzo initially evades a shotgun-wielding Martha, but a phone call from Stolas (Bryce Pinkham) results in his capture. He and Millie are tied to a pole by Martha and Ralphie, who plan to shoot and kill them. Moxxie escapes from the children's grasp, and right before Martha kills the two imps, he fatally shoots Martha from behind, rescuing Blitzo and Millie, while Ralphie runs away in fear. As Blitzo and Millie return to Hell, Moxxie stays behind in order to kill the remaining family. However, he takes pity on them, and decides to not kill them. He instead calls the local police to deal with them. But, instead of peacefully arresting them, the police blow up the house, killing Ralphie and his kids. Moxxie witnesses all of this before being dragged through the portal by Blitzo. Back in Hell, Blitzo, Millie, Loona, and Mayberry celebrate over a cake, while Moxxie sits, traumatized that he caused the death of an entire family.

Stolas' wife, Stella (Georgina Leahy), fights with Stolas after learning about his affair with Blitzo. Wanting to get out of the house, Stolas takes his teenage daughter Octavia (Barrett Wilbert Weed) to Loo Loo Land, an amusement park that she enjoyed as a young child (Juliana Sada). For their trip, Stolas hires I.M.P. to serve as bodyguards. Blitzo watches over Stolas and Octavia, while Moxxie and Millie enjoy themselves at the park.

Stolas takes Octavia to watch circus performer Robo Fizz (Alex Brightman). Octavia runs away from the show, fed up with his flirtations towards Blitzo. Stolas follows her, leaving Blitzo to get into a fight with Robo Fizz, a former co-worker of his. Stolas follows Octavia to a funhouse ride, where she tells him that her home doesn't feel like home anymore. Stolas tries to explain his failing relationship with her mother, but can't find the words to do so. Octavia admits that she fears Stolas will leave her behind in favor of Blitzo, and Stolas assures her that he will never leave her. After their conversation, Stolas decides it's time for them to leave as Blitzo and Robo Fizz's fight sets the rest of the park on fire.

I.M.P.'s company parking space is stolen by Blitzo's pop-star ex, Verosika Mayday (Cristina Vee), so he challenges her and her posse of succubi to a challenge. If I.M.P. can kill more people than Verosika's group can have sex with in one day, Verosika will have to give up the parking space. With partying spring-breakers as targets, Loona disguises herself as an attractive Goth girl to lure victims for I.M.P. to kill. However, she abandons the challenge to flirt with Verosika's hellhound, Vortex (James Monroe Iglehart), as Verosika's also-disguised group hypnotizes the remaining spring breakers into having sex with them. An argument arises between Loona and Blitzo after he intervenes between her and Vortex. She scolds him for treating her like a child, and a heartbroken Blitzo storms off, abandoning the challenge as well.

Moxxie and Millie take the challenge into their own hands and continue killing people, but some humans catch Moxxie and throw him into a beer barrel. As Millie rescues Moxxie from the barrel, a fish mutated by a beer can Verosika threw into the ocean starts attacking the beach. Millie kills the fish monster, and Blitzo uses the incident to blackmail Verosika into forfeiting the challenge. I.M.P. returns to Hell to reclaim their parking space, while the still-disguised Verosika and her team are arrested by the human police for causing chaos.

I.M.P. is hired by crazed inventor Loopty Goopty (Rogers) to kill his old business partner, Lyle Lipton (Michael Ruocco), for taking credit for their aging machine. Lipton, who was affected by the aging machine, is now a decrepit old man who no longer sees a point in life. Just as Lipton is about to kill himself, cherubs come to convince him that life is worth living by showing him joyous things like nature, childhood innocence, and love. However, I.M.P. follows the group and sabotages all of the cherubs' attempts.

After I.M.P. foils another attempt to help Lipton inside a theater, a fight breaks out between them and the cherubs. Lipton, seeing the amount of trouble that the cherubs and the demons are causing over him, realizes the significance of his life and decides to live, only for the cherubs to indirectly crush him under a piano. The cherubs are promptly exiled from Heaven by their superior for inadvertently killing Lipton. I.M.P. returns to Hell, believing Lipton's soul went to Heaven. However, just as Goopty confronts them for failing their job, Lipton arrives in Hell, and reconciles with Goopty.

Blitzo agrees to join Stolas in the Harvest Moon Festival, a festival showcased in the Wrath Ring of Hell. I.M.P. stays at the house of Millie's parents for the duration of the event. Moxxie struggles with impressing Millie's parents, whose farmhand Striker (Norman Reedus) enjoys watching while he strikes up a friendship with Blitzo. I.M.P. is informed of the annual Pain Games, a competition thrown in the Wrath Ring to demonstrate the strength of its contestants. Soon, only Striker and Blitzo remain, although Moxxie quickly loses each of the events.

Disheartened, Moxxie returns to the house and discovers that Striker is planning to kill Stolas. Moxxie and Millie try to stop him, but Striker easily overpowers them and locks them in a cellar. Moxxie breaks out of the cellar, and sets off to find Striker. As Striker is about to kill Stolas, Blitzo confronts him. Striker attempts to convince Blitzo to turn on Stolas and side with him before Moxxie arrives. Striker fights Moxxie and Blitzo, but escapes after they overpower him. Later, at a motel, Striker informs Stella of his failed assassination of Stolas.

Blitzo and Moxxie are captured by Agents 1 (Michael Romeo Ruocco) and 2 (Erica Luttrell), members of the D.H.O.R.K.S. organization, who have been monitoring the actions of I.M.P. on Earth. Blitzo and Moxxie are taken to a secure facility and are interrogated by the agents, who use truth gas on them; however, this instead causes Blitzo and Moxxie to suffer hallucinations surrounding their own personal issues. They subsequently reconcile their grievances with each other when the truth gas wears off.

Meanwhile, Millie and Loona infiltrate the facility to save Blitzo and Moxxie and kill many of the agents at the D.H.O.R.K.S. base. Once the demons are reunited, they are forced to fight off the rest of the agents and subsequently kill almost all of them. However, they are trapped and held at gunpoint by Agents 1 and 2. Stolas possesses Agent 2, forces the other dead agents to summon him, and takes I.M.P. back to Hell. However, it is shown that Agents 1 and 2 recorded the events that occurred inside the facility, stating their superiors will not be able to ignore this evidence.

Production and release

In June 2019, Medrano noted that she was working with Erica Lindbeck, Brock Baker, Brandon Rogers on a "new project",[17] likely referring to Helluva Boss.[b] In August, she posted illustrations of the main cast of characters.[18] The pilot was cast by voice actor Kellen Goff and voice-directed by Medrano and Rick Zieff. The company Horseless Cowboy assisted Medrano with voice work during the first season, with Horvitz and Medrano voice directing.[12] According to Medrano, the influence on developing Helluva Boss was to develop a backup project with the same "demons in Hell" formula and concept under her complete creative control in case anything should happen to delay or cancel Hazbin Hotel. Later, Lucas Bermudez of Screen Rant attributed the success of Hazbin Hotel as the sole reason for Helluva Boss being greenlit.[19] At some point, Rogers asked Jinkx Monsoon to voice a character in Helluva Boss, but Monsoon wanted to "voice stock characters instead" and they did so, voicing various characters during the show's first season.[20]

On November 25, 2019, the pilot was released on Medrano's YouTube channel.[21] Medrano contributed her writing and animation skills for this episode. Writing production for more episodes began in December 2019,[22] with 8 episodes ordered.[12] For these episodes, Sara "Serval" Fisher worked as an animator, Sam Miller as a background designer, and Eddie Mead as a cleanup artist.[c][d] In December 2019, Medrano reported that she and Rogers were writing episode plots for the upcoming season, and were looking for storyboard artists.[22][e] Episode writing continued into January 2020.[f]

In June 2020, Medrano stated her intent to feature more Black characters in Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel in a Tweet where she called on Black animators to share their work with her as a resumé to potentially be hired for work on the series to help "talented people in need of opportunities."[23] A few months later, in August 2020, the recording for the first eight episodes of season 1 was completed, and Lucas Bermudez of ScreenRant predicted that more episodes of Helluva Boss would be released to YouTube "as a web series" because of the COVID-19 pandemic, while also mentioning the news that Hazbin Hotel had been picked up as a series by A24.[19][g]

In October 2020, the first episode of season 1 was released on Halloween (October 31, 2020).[h] She stated on October 7 that the season would be started in fall 2020, but not all the episodes would be dropped at once, with the first eight episodes serving as the beginning of a "much grander season".[24] On October 31, she said that the "first self-made season of a cartoon has begun."[25] This contrasted with news that the first season would be released in late 2021.[11] In the episode, Rogers and Horvitz return as Blitzo and Moxxie, and while Lindbeck returns as Loona, she is replaced by Vivian Nixon as the voice of Millie. Baker was replaced by Bryce Pinkham as Stolas. Guest stars of the episode include Monsoon, Mara Wilson, and Maxwell Atoms. Wilson voices a former human teacher at Puppies Junior School who commits murder-suicide after discovering that her husband had an affair with a mistress named Martha[i] (who is voiced by Monsoon).[7] Martha is a wife who appears to be "happy and wholesome" on the surface but is homicidal (along with the rest of her family). Additionally, Atoms voices Ralphie,[7] the husband of Martha. Medrano also voiced a "random cashier lady."[j] The same day, Jefferson Friedman released a single from the first episode entitled "Stolas Speaks".[26] On November 15, the official Twitter account for the show stated that the second episode would be "comin' soon."[27] Medrano shared several teasers for the second on her Instagram and Twitter. On December 8, 2020, the official Helluva Boss Twitter account announced that the next episode, titled "Loo Loo Land", would be released the following day.[28] On January 31, 2021, the third episode of the series was released on YouTube following teasers shared on Twitter.[29] However, the episode was age-restricted by YouTube, leading to an outcry from those working on the show.[30][k] Afterward, Newgrounds expressed interest in hosting the uncensored version of the episode and "promo with a front page banner," something which Medrano supported.[31] On February 1, after the episode's age restriction had been lifted by YouTube, Medrano tweeted that the episode "is viewable again."[l]

In February 2021, Medrano told Insider that Helluva Boss remains independent of Hazbin Hotel, saying she intended to keep it that way as "long as the audience wants to keep seeing it," adding that they have "a plan for where the story goes and ends," noting that having an ending seems "surreal" to her due to the dedicated team working on the show.[30]

On February 26, 2021, a teaser for episode four was released on the official Helluva Boss Twitter account, saying that the episode was "cookin' up" and was the "zaniest" episode yet.[32] An additional teaser shared on the Twitter account stated that episode four would be released on March 14, 2021.[33]

On April 17, 24, and 27, 2021, teasers were shared on the Twitter account, all promising a quick release of episode 5.[34][35][36]

On May 5, 2021, the Helluva Boss Twitter account stated that episode 6 would be "the longest of this season", and that the team would need an extra month to produce it.[37] A short clip shared on July 16, 2021 on Twitter stated that it would not be long before the sixth episode released.[38] Two final teasers shared on August 19 and 21, 2021 stated that the episode would be coming out the following weekend.[39][40]

LGBTQ representation

Helluva Boss has various LGBTQ characters, specifically a bisexual demon named Moxxie,[41] and a pansexual demon named Blitzo.[42] Another demon named Stolas is implied to be a member of the LGBTQ community due to his relations with both men and women. Medrano also reacted positively to a fan idea of a sitcom set in an alternative universe where "Blitzo and Stolas are two single dads getting married".[43] Episode 5 introduced the character Sallie May, Millie's sister, who was confirmed on the show's official Twitter account to be transgender.[44]

"Oh Millie" music video

On February 14, 2020, an animated Helluva Boss music video called "Oh Millie" was uploaded on YouTube,[45] centering around Moxxie and Millie's loving marriage. The video features a song written by Parry Gripp, with vocals from Horvitz and Lindbeck.

Voice dubs

On September 16, 2020, the French dub of the pilot was released on Medrano's YouTube channel.[46]

Reception

Helluva Boss was met with critical acclaim, garnering praise for the animation, characters, voice acting, and humor. In December 2019, in an article about the current state of adult animation, CBR animation critic Reuben Baron, stated that while the pilot episodes of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss have garnered "some warranted criticism" because of their immature and edgy humor, they are still "clear labors of love from an animation standpoint."[47] This contrasted with Tito W. James's assessment on Comicon.com that demons having access to a portal that goes to the human realm "adds a new dynamic and is ripe for narrative potential."[48] Similarly, a reviewer for the Spanish site Cafetoons praised the characters for being introduced in a "very appropriate way" while maintaining the adult comedy and catchy songs. Some even claim that the Helluva Boss pilot was better than the Hazbin Hotel pilot.[49] Other animators praised the show's first episode.[m] Others stated that there are "multiple musical numbers in each episode" like Animaniacs and Family Guy, and although the second episode is more serious than previous episodes, there are "plenty of laughs and raunchy jokes."[15] The same was said about the show's third episode, which one reviewer said had other types of humor like "fourth-wall breaking and blink-and-you-miss-it sight-gags."[50] Grant Nelson wrote in The Clarion that the series is one that "every nerd and goth would love" and said the show hits home on abuse of sex workers and broken families.[51]
