Chair conformation is a term used for the most stable chemical structure of a six member single bonded carbon ring. When atoms are bound to each other the electrons in the bonds want to spread out as far as they can from each other. In methane this is distance between bonds is 109.5 degrees. In a chair conformation the connected carbon atoms arrange themselves as close to the 109.5 degree optimium as they can. The overall structure looks like a chair, and is more stable than the other main configuration which is called the boat formation.
