Lady and the Tramp is a 2019 American musical romance film directed by Charlie Bean and written by Andrew Bujalski and Kari Granlund, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Taylor Made, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film is a live-action/CGI hybrid remake of Walt Disney’s 1955 animated film of the same name, which was based on the 1945 Cosmopolitan magazine story of "Happy Dan, the Cynical Dog" by Ward Greene. The film stars the voices of Tessa Thompson, Justin Theroux, Janelle Monáe, and Sam Elliott with the human characters portrayed by Thomas Mann, Kiersey Clemons, Yvette Nicole Brown, F. Murray Abraham, Adrian Martinez, and Ken Jeong. It is dedicated to storyboard artist Chris Reccardi, who died on May 2, 2019.

Lady and the Tramp was released on November 12, 2019, on Disney+, making it the first Disney remake not to be released theatrically, but instead only on a streaming service. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its performances and voice acting, but criticism for its visual effects, screenplay and pacing.

Plot

On Christmas Day, Jim Dear gives his wife, Darling, an American Cocker Spaniel puppy whom she names Lady. Lady grows up and befriends the neighbors' dogs: elderly Bloodhound Trusty and feisty Scottish Terrier Jock. Meanwhile, a Schnauzer-mutt, known to most dogs as the Tramp, spends his days wandering the streets of New Orleans in search of food while causing trouble for the local dog catcher, Elliot. After a run-in with Elliot during which Tramp frees two of his friends from the dog catcher's carriage, Tramp escapes into one of New Orleans' more affluent areas and ends up in Lady's backyard. Wondering why Jim Dear and Darling have been neglectful of late and shooed by Darling's Aunt Sarah, a distracted Lady initially mistakes Tramp for Trusty and confides in him, from which Tramp surmises that Darling is about the have a baby. Tramp warns Lady that "once the baby moves in, the dog moves out", which Lady dismisses. However, after the baby is born, Lady realizes there might have been some truth to Tramp's words.

A month after the baby's birth, Jim Dear and Darling leave for an extended visit to Jim Dear's sister and ask Aunt Sarah to dog-sit. While Aunt Sarah is upstairs, her two cats, Devon and Rex, demolish the living room. Blaming Lady for the chaos, Aunt Sarah takes Lady to a pet store in order to buy a muzzle. Lady escapes into an alley but is confronted by a street dog from whom she is saved by Tramp. The two dogs spend the rest of the day together and share a meal at Tony's Restaurant. Lady confesses she is doubtful whether her owners still want her and Tramp reveals he once had owners, but was abandoned after they had a child. Their conversation is interrupted by Elliot who eventually captures Lady and brings her to the dog pound. The other dogs at the pound discuss Tramp's self-serving nature, which causes Lady to reevaluate the evening and question why Tramp did not attempt to rescue her from Elliot. Fortunately, Jim Dear and Darling track Lady down at the pound and bring her home, where they resolutely kick Aunt Sarah out.

Regretful that he did not do more to save Lady from Elliot, Tramp eventually makes his way to Lady's house but she indicates their friendship has reached its conclusion. When a rat that had been plaguing the house for some time finds its way into the nursery, Lady alerts Tramp who manages to kill the rat, getting injured in the process, knocks over Lulu's crib by accident. He is caught by Jim Dear and Darling who assume he was not attacking Lulu. As Elliot takes Tramp away to be euthanized, Lady reveals the dead rat to her owners, who knew Tramp saved their child making them realize that Tramp was actually protecting Lulu and not attacking her. Lady enlists Trusty and Jock's help and the dogs chase and overturn the dog catcher's carriage and rescue Tramp. When Jim Dear and Darling arrive having remembered that Tramp was just protecting Lulu in the room up there. On the scene they decide to adopt Tramp and by Christmas-time, Tramp has settled into his new home.

Development

On February 8, 2018, it was announced that Walt Disney Pictures was developing a live-action adaptation of the 1955 animated film Lady and the Tramp. The film was expected to premiere on Disney+, Disney's streaming service that launched in late 2019.[6] On March 19, 2018, it was announced that film was set to be directed by Charlie Bean from a screenplay by Andrew Bujalski with Brigham Taylor serving as a producer.[7]

Casting

In July 2018, it was announced that Ashley Jensen, Justin Theroux, and Sam Elliott had been cast in the voice roles of Jock, Tramp, and Trusty, respectively. Additionally, it was reported that Kiersey Clemons was in talks for the live-action role of Darling, Lady's human owner.[8][9][10] In August 2018, it was reported that Tessa Thompson and Benedict Wong had been cast in the voice roles of Lady and Bull, respectively, and that Thomas Mann had been cast in the live-action role of Jim Dear.[11][12] In September 2018, it was announced that Yvette Nicole Brown and Adrian Martinez had been cast in the live-action roles of Aunt Sarah and the dog-catcher Elliot, respectively.[13][14] In October 2018, it was announced Arturo Castro had been cast in the live-action role of Marco and that Janelle Monáe had been cast in the voice role of Peg.[15][16]

The production utilized real dogs to portray the film's titular characters with a dog named Rose portraying Lady in the film. About three months prior to the start of filming, the animals started their training for the film.[17] Tramp is physically portrayed by Monte, a rescue dog, while Jackie was renamed Jock shortly before filming began.[18]

Filming

Voice work for the film begin in July 2018[19] with principal photography of the film's live-action externally filmed portions last from September 10, 2018 to November 18, 2018 in Savannah, Georgia. Locations were set to include Johnson Square, Wright Square and The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.[20][21] Filming on an indoor soundstage took place through December 2018.[22]

Differences from the animated film

Although largely following the same story line as the original animated classic, the live-action adaption does contain some differences, most notably with regards to the gender and ethnicity of several characters. Jock, who is male in the animated film, is female in the new version, while Aunt Sarah's cats - originally female Siamese cats called Si and Am - are now male Devon Rex cats called Devon and Rex. Jim Dear and Darling's baby, an unnamed boy in the animated film, is a girl named Lulu in the remake. In addition, while all human characters were white in the animated film, Darling and Aunt Sarah are both Black in the remake, while the doctor who delivers Darling's baby is Asian.

Several plot elements from the animated film are expanded, including the role of the dog catcher, who is unnamed in the original film, and Tramp's backstory. Conversely, the scene in which Lady and Tramp remove Lady's muzzle is shortened with the actual beaver whose help they enlist in the animated film replaced by a statue of a beaver. While all of the film's songs are retained for the remake, the Siamese Cat Song originally sung by Aunt Sarah's cats is replaced by a new song to avoid the racially insensitive connotations of the original song.

The remake also offers more closure than the original film, with Jim Dear and Darling more firmly admonishing Aunt Sarah for her behavior, while the fate of various other dogs is also revealed.

Music

The film was going to feature a new version of "The Siamese Cat Song", performed by Janelle Monáe.[23] The song was to be re-written by Nate "Rocket" Wonder, Roman GianArthur, and Monáe due to both its modern-day perceived racist connotations and to fit the characters' depictions in the film.[23] The song was ultimately reworked as a blues song titled "What a Shame".[24] Monáe also performed two new songs for the film.[23] On August 23, 2019, Joseph Trapanese was revealed to be composing the film's score.[3][2] The soundtrack, featuring Trapanse's score, as well as songs from the original film performed by the remake's cast, was released on November 12, 2019.[25]

Reception

Critical response

On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 65% and an average rating of 5.90/10, based on 66 reviews. The site's critics consensus reads: "Lady and the Tramp's cute dogs and likable cast work well enough, but the live-action update lacks some of the magic that made the original 1955 film such a delight."[31] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 48 out of 100 based on 13 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews."[32]

In a mixed review, Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune wrote, "The worst of this new Lady and the Tramp comes when the script piles on the strenuous comic action, followed by ill-advised dark shadows."
