This course critically examines the nature, role, and significance of new communication technologies in contemporary (largely) U.S. culture. It considers the relationship between these technologies and popular conceptions of work, leisure, art, knowledge, identity, and environment and thus provides a foundation for understanding the nature, role, and significance of new communication technologies as a dynamic factor in society. Students will be editing (or creating) entries on some of the authors whose work we read as well as articles related to course topics.

Assignment - Evaluate an article and finding your article

I recommend starting the evaluation and switching articles if it turns out you cannot find much to add/edit. IF YOU ARE ELECTING TO CREATE A NEW ARTICLE: evaluate an article that is similar to the one you are creating (i.e. an biographical article if you are writing about a person, or an article about a similar topic).

[[../../../training/students/choose-topic-from-list-exercise|You can either Choose your topic / Find your sources from a list your instructor has prepared for you or you can choose your own subject by going through the exercise and training above.]]

Course meetings
Tuesday, 9 November 2021   |   Thursday, 11 November 2021
Assignment - Respond to your peer review

You probably have some feedback from other students and instructor. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.

Resources:

  • Editing Wikipedia, pages 12 and 14
  • Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have any questions.
Assignment - Polish your work

Make the changes your peer/I have suggested and begin to finalize your edits/content. Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Review training modules as needed. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!

Week 13

Course meetings
Tuesday, 16 November 2021   |   Thursday, 18 November 2021
Assignment - Begin moving your work to Wikipedia

Move your work out of Wikipedia, following along with the training as you go. If you create a new page be sure to copy your work into a new sandbox as well, and delete the talk page content for the LIVE page you have published.

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace."

It's the final chance to develop your article before final grading

  • Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
  • Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert at any time!
