Westmar

Westmar was located in Lonaconing, MD and housed over 400 students from the Georges Creek Valley, Westernport, and the strip of US 220 between Danville and McCoole. Westmar was established in the fall of 1989 as a result of the consolidation of Bruce High School (of Westernport) and Valley High School (of Lonaconing). Bruce was the first high school of the Westernport area and has presided over two buidings in in the city. The first Bruce High building is a 3 story building on Church Street and is now home to Westernport Elementary School. The second and final building that Bruce presided in is a three story building Philos Avenue that was established in the mid 1950s. It is now home to Westmar Middle. Valley High was established in 1953 along Lower George's Creek Rd. (better known as MD Rte. 36). It was built as a result of the consolidation of Central and Barton High Schools. When Valley and Bruce closed in the spring of 1953, Westmar High School the new Westmar High School inherited the building. In the fall of 2007, Westmar Middle will inherit the building. Central High (a high school preceding Valley) was located next to the Iron Furnace on Main Street in Lonaconing and housed students from Lonaconing and Midland. Barton High (also a predecessor of Valley) was located on Latrobe St. in Barton and housed students from the Barton vicinity. Before these schools, however, the area was filled with small schools for each neighborhood.

Beall

Beall High School was established in the mid 1930s as the first high school of Frostburg. It has since then consolidated with Mount Savage High School (1990s). Beall will be torn down in the summer of 2007 to make way for athletic fields for Mountain Ridge. The Mount Savage High School building is being occupied by Mount Savage Pre K-8 School. The elementary school section (PK-5) houses students from the Mt. Savage region. The middle school section (6-8) houses students from Frostburg and Mt. Savage (Old Beall District). Before Beall opened, there were many little community schools.
