This is a modern instrument coming down from African Thumb piano class/family, usually played by the thumbs and sometimes fingers commonly using metal tines. There is some variety of different designs and local names (connecting with original ethnic instruments' names), for example: "Kalimba", "Sansa". The best known now-a-days is "M'bira". Some special redesigned has been invented in USA as Array M'Bira because of utilizing the Array system of note arrangement created by Bill Wesley, inventor.

The Array Mbira is played by Ry Cooder (Buena Vista Social Club and Talking Timbuktu), Emil Richards, Pharaoh Sanders, Mileece, Shannon Terry, Imogen Heap.
