Gameplay
In the game, players build teams of five characters known as "Aurorians", each associated with one of four elements. In the turn-based combat stages, players guide these characters along paths of as many connected tiles of the same element as possible. Depending on the path length, the characters' attack powers increase. Characters can also activate abilities to influence the battlefield, including changing tile elements, teleporting or healing. Outside of combat, players can build up their base and interact with or level up their characters.[3]
Plot
Alchemy Stars takes place in Astra, a world inhabited by Aurorians and Caelestites. Players take on the role of a survivor of the Caelestite race who helps Aurorians defeat invading creatures called the Eclipsites.
Development
The game's story was written by Tadashi Satomi, a writer for the first two Persona games.[3] The theme song, "White Midnight" (白夜), was written and performed by the Japanese singer Reol.[4] The game surpassed one million pre-registrations ahead of its release.[5] The game was released in both Japanese and English versions on 17 June 2021.[1]
To celebrate the game's global launch, Alchemy Stars worked with Crunchyroll to host a giveaway which includes a premium Crunchyroll membership, among others.[6] Tencent Games also organized an illustration contest on Pixiv, commissioning Shoko Nakagawa and other artists to support the competition.[7]
Reception
Hardcore Droid praised Alchemy Star' gameplay and story, though notes that players may find them monotonous.[8] The game surpassed 10 million downloads as of September 2021.[9]
