The title card for Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger

Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger (爆竜戦隊アバレンジャー, Bakuryū Sentai Abarenjā, translated as Blastasaur (refactored from bakuryuu) Squadron Abaranger (refactored from abare)) was Toei Company Limited's 27th production of the Super Sentai television series. Its footage was used in the Americanized Power Rangers: Dino Thunder. This series was dubbed into Korean as Power Rangers: Dino Thunder (파워레인저 다이노썬더) in South Korea.

Plot

Scientists believe that 65,000,000 years ago, a meteorite's crash on Earth killed off the dinosaurs, but in truth, it split Earth into two parallel universes: The Earth we know (called "Another-Earth" by the Blastasaurs, the Dragonoid people, and the Evoliens) and an Earth where dinosaurs were still the superior species (Dino Earth), eventually evolving into the Dragonoid and Blastasaurs races. The two Earths were separated until Asuka, a Dragnoid from DinoEarth, arrived on Earth via a transdimensional portal. But he was followed by evil Evoliens in the spaceship Anamolicarus and the three Blastasaurs under their control. As Blastasaurs Tyrannosaurus attacked Tokyo, a call was sent out to three destined ones who possessed Dino GUTS to gain the powers to tame the three beasts. Together with their Blastasaurs partners, the three become Abarangers to protect their dimension from the Evoliens.

Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger

"Savage DinoGuts! Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger!"

When they evoke their "Dino Guts", The Abarangers tap into the power of their Blastasaur partners, obtaining their strength and power as their own. Each also has an "Abare Mode" where the diamond pattern on their costumes become sharp blades. Ranru's gives her wings as well, but later in the show she stops having them. Colors: Red, Blue, Yellow, Black, White.

"Bursting with energy~AbaRed! (AbareMax!)"

  • Ryouga Hakua (伯亜 凌駕, Hakua Ryōga) / AbaRed (アバレッド, Abareddo): 22 years old. The optimistic team leader, a certified environmental protection investigator from the United States. Though he's overly confident, he has an extremely good nature and is friendly, warm hearted, and loving; he doesn't hate anyone. He was given guardianship of Mai after his brother and sister-in-law died and does his best to raise her. He eventually gained the power to become AbareMax (アバレマックス, Abare Makkusu). In the epilogue, he has returned to USA, and travels across the country along with Mai. His Blastasaur partners are Tyranno and Styraco & DinoCarry.
    • Dino Weapons: Tyranno Rod, StyRiser
    • Special Attacks: Tyranno Rod Circle Moon

"Exploding seriously~AbareBlue!"

  • Yukito Sanjou (三条 幸人, Sanjō Yukito) / AbareBlue (アバレブルー, Abareburū): 21 years old. A charismatic chiropractor and the anti-hero of the group, Yukito will help anyone, but charges outrageously high prices for it: in fact, he asked Asuka for U.S. $400,000,000 in order to assume his role as AbareBlue, something Asuka naively accepted and promised to save and pay, much to Yukito's surprise. He seems cold, but has a kind heart underneath, though he will never fully reveal his feelings. Yukito's anti-social personality comes from his past: when he was little, his father tried to succeed him into taking over the Sanjou Corporation for the future. Yukito was forced to study daily and was never given breaks; he wasn't even allowed to have any friends. The last straw that broke the father-son relationship was when his father paid his girlfriend's family to move away while he was in junior high. Yukito never forgave him for that and claimed that he hated him, but in reality, he harbored a self-loathing for a long time. The epilogue of the show and Dekaranger vs. Abaranger seems to imply that Yukito is in a relationship with Emiri. His Blastasaur partner is Kera.
    • Dino Weapon: Tricera Bunker

"Courageous demolition~AbareYellow!"

  • Ranru Itsuki (樹 らんる, Itsuki Ranru) / AbareYellow (アバレイエロー, Abareierō): 20 years old. A technology mistress who owns a German BD-1 bicycle she nicknamed "Birdie." All she really wants is peace. She was formerly trained to be an idol, but Ranru hated it and left to work in the mechanical field. She is interested in anything mechanical, can create her own devices, and is a genius in mechanics. Ranru used to be afraid of natto until she was forced to conquer it during a battle with a Trinoid. Ranru also carries a small camera with her and usually snaps photos of the enemy during mid-battle to come up with a strategy on how to defeat it. She sometimes has an itchy back and often wants others to scratch it for her. Her Blastasaur partner is Ptera.
    • Dino Weapon: Ptera Daggers

"The invincible spirit of the Dragon-People~AbareBlack!"

  • Asuka Ono (アスカ, Asuka) / AbareBlack (アバレブラック, Abareburakku): A warrior from DinoEarth with a sad past. He was the last of people to fight the Evolians and escaped to Earth. He brought the Dino Bracelets and gave them to the Abarangers. When he arrived, the Dino Harp was damaged, so he couldn't transform. When he got it finally restored, he lost his first battles as he couldn't use his Dino Guts correctly, until his true sense of justice awakened. Asuka has shown enormous amounts of power, as he has been able even of defeating a Giganoid and an upgraded KillerGhost on his own: however, due to his gentle personality, he often holds back during battles. In one episode, it was revealed that his surname was "Ono", although he only uses it on Another Earth. His Blastasaur partner is Brachio. During the events of Dekaranger vs. Abaranger, Asuka was brought back to Earth by Kasumi's power to help the gang. Asuka is expected to appear in the 2007 team-up film "GoGo Sentai Boukenger vs. Super Sentai."
    • Dino Weapon: Dino Thruster
    • Special Attacks: Fire Inferno, Splash Inferno, Storm Inferno, Grand Inferno, Dino Thruster Circle Moon, Dino Thruster Head Crash

"The exciting masterpiece~AbareKiller!"

  • Doctor Mikoto Nakadai (仲代 壬琴, Nakadai Mikoto-Hakase) / AbareKiller (アバレキラー, Abarekirā): A brilliant doctor who was observing the Abarangers from the time the Blastasaurs first appeared. He gained the DinoMinder and with it the Zerogo suit, which was due to self-destruct sometime soon due to it being the prototype for the other Abaranger suits. He didn't seem to care that he would die, taking the entire city with him. After spending time observing the other Rangers he decided it would be more fun to fight against them rather than with them. He fought the Abarangers and his Blastasaur partner is TopGaler, and later Stego. At one point he even assumed leadership over the villains. After fighting the Killer Giganoid with the Abaranger, TopGaler betrayed him, he joined the team, even if it cost him his life. It was eventually revealed that the reason the Dino Minder hadn't exploded yet was because Mikoto was the Another-Earth host for Dezumozorlya. Soon after though Dezumozorlya was removed from him, and the Dino Minder was set to explode the next time he transformed. When Dino Minder began to self-destruct, he and TopGaler flew away from Earth and died in the explosion. He returned for a short time to help the Abaranger and Dekaranger in Dekaranger VS Abaranger, having been revived by SaunaEelGingko's power and vanished again after the enemy was defeated. As he vanished, he told Asuka to give Kasumi his regards.
    • Dino Weapon: Wing Pentact

Allies

  • Emiri Imanaka (今中 笑里, Imanaka Emiri): Emiri is a high school student. When the Blastasaurs first came to earth, Emiri heard their call and almost became AbareYellow. Unfortunately, her body was unable to support the transformation, but Emiri contributes for the team, such as suggesting names (she came up with Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger, AbareMax and SenpuuGoraiAbarenou when the other heroes donated their Dinoguts to Abarenou in Abaranger vs. Hurricanger). She tries her hardest to become an Abaranger... she eventually does in terms of AbarePink (or "AbarePig" in the minds of some fans). One of her many mishaps are the time that Voffa tried to turn her into a Giganoid. Later in the series, Emiri creates her own AbarePink suit (of course without powers), in order to convince her parents to let her stay at the Dino Curry House, but this suit lasted for only a single episode. Emiri also nicknames herself as "Emi-pon." The epilogue of the show and Dekaranger VS Abaranger seems to imply that she is in a relationship with Yukito.
  • Ryuunnosuke Sugishita (杉下 竜之介, Sugishita Ryūnnosuke): Sugishita runs a curry restaurant: DinoHouse, which is the Abarangers' base of operations. When the Blastasaurs' first came to earth, Sugishita heard their call and almost became AbareBlue. Unfortunately, his body was unable to support the transformation. Kind and supporting of the Abaranger, he often gives advice and helps the team whenever possible. After the fight against the Evolians, Sugishita's curry business became extremely successful and resulted in him receiving great wealth and setting up a global chain of Dino House curry restaurants, as seen in Dekaranger VS Abaranger. However, he lost ownership to Yatsudenwani. Emiri nicknames him as "Suke-san."
  • Mai Hakua (伯亜 舞, Hakua Mai): Ryouga's 5-year-old niece. Ryouga's brother and sister-in-law died in a car crash, leaving Mai in Ryouga's care. Mai thinks of Ryouga as a father and always cheers him on when he fights as Abared. Starting at the end of ep. 39, Kasumi chooses Mai to be the only one to see her. In ep. 41, a virus transforms human people into Barmia and Mai was infected as well. Kasumi warns the Abaranger that the Barmia around are Mai's friends. After the events of the show, Mai stayed in California with Ryouga.
  • Trinoid #12: Yatsudenwani Crocodile + Japanese Fatsia + telephone (18, 21-Dekaranger vs. Abaranger): This Trinoid changed to the side of good and has a crush on Ranru. He was captured by AbareKiller and forced to be his servant for most of the series and eventually came to see him as a friend. In the end, he chose to stay behind rather than returning to Dino Earth. It's revealed that he now runs the Dinosaur restaurant with Ryuunosuke, which flourished. In Dekaranger vs. Abaranger, it's revealed that he held an artifact capable of resurrecting Dezumozorlya. In addition, he glomped Ban/DekaRed mistaking him for Ranru and easedropped on Ranru, Emiri, Umeko, and Jasmine while they were bathing resulting in a severe beating during the group's victory meal.
  • Princess Freesia (フリージャ姫, Furīja-hime): Appears in the Abaranger Movie. When the gang are having a fun summer party at the beach, she appears in front of Ryouga and HanaBinkiVenus literally drops from the sky to capture her. There is a great myth through the Dragon People in DinoEarth that a princess guards the two evil Blastasaurus' on an arctic island. Asuka was surprised that the legend he grew up with was true. The Bakulaser had been broken in half. The other piece was excavated by humans and put in a museum. Ryouga and Freesia sneak in and steal it. He uses his Dino GUTS to merge it together. Turns out she really was Garuvuidei in disguise and used the fully formed Bakulaser to call upon the Blastasaurus'. The real Freesia was inside of the Bakulaser and wasn't able to come out. She also expressed affection for Ryouga. She commended the Abaranger for their bravery and went off with the Bakulaser.
  • Mahoro: Asuka's love interest.
  • Kasumi: Kasumi was Asuka and Mahoro's unborn daughter, but was chosen to be the host for Dezumozorlya, forming Lije. Fortunately, Kasumi's soul was not gone, but when Lije turned into Lijewel, she was forced to leave and chose Mai to be the one who could see her. Kasumi would later be born and re-named Mikoto, after Dr. Mikoto Nakadai/AbareKiller.
  • Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger: Meet up in the Abaranger vs. Hurricanger special to fight the Space Ninja Janiiga. First, the Abarangers found Yousuke (Hurricane Red) fighting Wendinu and Furabijou, enemies of the Hurricangers. When the Hurricangers presumably defeated them, they fell into a warp hole that transferred them into the Evorian castlehold. They had joined the Evorians. Even though the Hurricangers and Abarangers had trouble adjusting to this sudden event at first, eventually they collaborated to fight off the enemies. Yousuke (Hurricane Red) briefly made an appearance in the special Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger VS Abaranger, but it was actually Kazak in disguise, tricking the Abarangers and leading them into injury.
  • Heavenly Ninja Shurikenger: Thought to be dead near the Hurricanger finale, Shurikenger, along with Revolver Mammoth, brefily return to help the Abaranger, Hurricanger and Gouraiger in battling Janiiga and the Evolien.
  • Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger: Meet up in the Dekaranger VS Abaranger special to fight an Alienizer's attempt to resurrect Dezumozoria. In the beginning, Ryouga, Yukito, and Ranru were arrested by the Dekarangers for attacking the city, but they later found out that they were after an Alienizer who was trying to revive Dezumozorlya.

Invasion's Garden Evolien

The Invasion's Garden Evolien (侵略の園エヴォリアン, Shinryaku no Sono Evorian) are the Wicked Life Clan (Jameizoku), they came from Dino Earth. They dwelled within a castle-like structure, the Invasion's Garden Palace, before Dezumzorlya turned it into a giant cyclops-like host called DezumoGevirus to battle the Blastasaurs with while transferring itself into Geildon. The fortress was destroyed when AbarenOh and MaxOhJa seemingly sacrificed themselves (with Ryouga and Yukito inside both respective cockpits), but survived by burrowing underground.

  • Wicked Life God Dezumozorlya (Jameishin Dezumozorruia): The Evolien god, a parasitic entity that was held in the meteorite that crashed to Earth. When Earth was split, Dezumozorlya's essence was divided between the two earths, and took one being of each world as its host and tranmigrated itself through the host's descendants. It is said that because of its very presence that war and famine broke out and some of its hosts have wreaked havoc throughout the course of human history. In the time of Abaranger, Mikoto held the essence of the inactive Earth-counterpart, and the Dezumozorlya of DinoEarth found a host in Rije. When it was purged from Lijewel, Dezumozorlya sought stronger inhuman hosts (including Mikela and Voffa) until he chose Geildon as its ideal "puppet-vessel" while it used the Graden Place as his final body. As Dezumogevarus, Dezumozorlya was soon destroyed by the Blastasaurs after it attempted to take them with it.
  • Lije (リジェ, Rije) (1-36) / Lijewel (リジュエル, Rijueru) (37-47): She is Dezumozorlya's child-like metaron, responsible for linking the two worlds. She was originally the daughter of Asuka & Mahoro until the Dino-Earth Dezumozorlya entered Mahoro's body & made the preborn Kasumi its' host. She was force-grown into an adult, Lijewel, to tempt Mikoto to join her and later mutated into DezumoLijewel. Through the combined power of all five Abaranger, Kasumi 'overpowered' Dezumozorlya and Lijewel was restored to an infant once Dezumozorlya was removed from her. However, Kasumi still possessed some of the Lijewel's power.
  • Dark Sect (San Kanbu) (1-48): The three servants of Lije/Lijewel.
    • Destruction Messenger Jeanne (ジャンヌ, Jannu) (1-32): She was originally a Dragonoid and was Asuka's love, but she was parasitized by the Evoliens. Because of her previous life, Jeanne had a fixation on killing Asuka. She also could use the armor of Geildon whenever she needed to. She eventually returned to normal, though Mahoro assumed her Evolien identity to help the Abarangers escape from the enemy camp until Dezumozorlya learned of her treachery. She return to Earth during the ending of Dekaranger vs. Abaranger.
    • DezumoVoorla (47-48): The 3rd host of Dezumozorlya created when Mikela and Voffa were merged into one being, though both were proud to hold Dezumozorlya's essence in them. DezumoVoorla was used to absorb the Earth-Dezumozorlya from AbareKiller's body and was killed by Killeroh.
      • Creation Messenger Mikela (創造の使徒・ミケラ, Sōzō no Shito Mikera) (1-47): The one who creates the Trinoids. He is an amoeba that grew and evolved to take on a more humanoid shape. He is a painter and hates to make a creation when uninspired by his muse. He despises humans, their art and their culture. Long ago, when he created SaunaEelGinko, he sealed it away in a red orb because of its' immense powers. He and his partner, Voffa ended up being merged as one host for Dezumozorlya at the end of the series to form DezumoVoorla.
      • Unlimited Messenger Voffa (無限の使徒・ヴォッファ, Mugen no Shito Voffa) (1-47): He enlarges the Trinoids and creates the giant Giganoids from musical compositions using his harp. He is an amoeba that grew and evolved to take on a more humanoid shape. He likes to refer himself as Fate itself and doesn't like his music to be heard when his work isn't ready. In Episode 2 he was shown growing and evolving within the meteor that crashed into the earth that caused it to split into "Another Earth" and "Dino Earth". He and his partner, Mikela ended up being merged as one host for Dezumozorlya at the end of the series to form DezumoVoorla.
  • Darkness Messenger Geildon (1-2, 5-): The first of the Evoliens to attack Earth, but was killed by Jeanne after failing in his mission. It would later turn out that he was wearing a cursed suit of armor that bonded with Mahoro's older brother, Mizuho (1-2), whom Jeanne killed for his failure. Geildon was also worn by Jeanne during episode 6, though she was unable to control its power. Then Asuka donned the armor two times, losing himself due to the cursed armor's power. By the finale, Geildon was transformed into Wicked Life Soldier Armor Dezumogevalus (Dezumogevarusu), the final host of Dezumozorlya, which was soon destroyed by AbareYellow and AbareBlack.
  • Dimensional Bard Garuvuidei (Garubidi) (Movie): An Evolien general who captured Princess Freesia and sought to revive Bakuren'oh by finding his components. Killed by Abared with the Bakulaser.
  • Bakurenoh (バクレンオー, Bakuren'ō, Blast Union King) (Movie, 48): The Legendary Horrible Blastasaurs CarnoRyutus & ChasmoSieldon combine to form Bakurenoh, the evil, icy counterpart of Abarenoh by the command "Fusion, CarnoRyutus, ChasmoShieldon!" (Gattai-da Karnoryūtusu Kasmosearudon). It could use its sword to slice off Abarenoh's drill-arm and use it as its own to form Bakurenoh Twin Drill before the other Blastasaurs forced it to give it back. In the movie, it was defeated by Killer Abaren'oh, but it returned to help DezumoVoorla to fight the Abarangers. Soon it was destroyed for good by Abaren'oh and MaxOuja.
    • Blastasaur CarnoRyutus (爆竜カルノリュータス, Bakuryū Karnoryūtusu): A Carnotaurus, one of the Legendary Horrible Blastasaurs with the same attacks as Tyranno as well as a freezing breath attack. Forms the majority of Bakurenoh: the head, body, left arm, and legs, and the blade of the Double Tail Sword. Detaches and donates his tail to another robo combination to add "Drill" suffix to the name, or with the Tyranosaurus' tail, the "Twin Drill" suffix
    • Blastasaur ChasmoShieldon (爆竜カスモシールドン, Bakuryū Kasmosearudon): A Chasmosaurus, one of the Legendary Horrible Blastasaurs with the same attacks as Kera as well as a freezing breath attack. Forms Bakurenoh's right arm and shield and the handle of the Double Tail Sword. Becomes a right arm on another combination to add the "Shieldon" suffix, though this is never used in the footage.
  • Wicked Life Squadron Evoranger (Jamei Sentai Evoranjaa) (30): These are really revived Trinoids used to test AbareKiller in Abare Mode's powers.
    • Sharkuru Red: Was the revived Trinoid #10.
    • Ayamega Blue: Was the revived Trinoid #11.
    • Tensai Yellow: Was the revived Trinoid #3.
  • Barmia Soldiers (Baamia-hei): The Evolien foot soldiers and are evolved humanoid amoebas. At one time the Evoliens attempted to turn humans into Barmias.
    • Gelru: Black Barmias.
    • Zolru: White Barmias.

But in reality, once he was inserted into the Giganoid, Immortal's purpose was to draw out the Dezumoryla inside him. From there, Giganoid-11 would fused into the Tree of Life, to scatter the Evoliens' world wide. To ensure that, it brought back Giganoids #9 and #10. Killed by Great Abaren'oh.

  • The main 3 Abarangers' family names are all puns on three periods of the Mesozoanic era:
    • Hakua Ryouga: Hakua-Ki (Cretaceous)
    • Sanjou Yukito: Sanjou-Ki (Triassic)
    • Itsuki Ranru: Jura-Ki (Jurassic)
  • Yukito's name (幸人) means "happy person."
  • Asuka's name is a pun of the "Asuka" era in Japanese history.
  • Mikoto's name is Japanese for "lord" or "prince".

Blastasaurs

  • The Japanese term, Bakuryuu, can be translated literally as "Explosive Dragon", using a part of the kanji used for "Kyoryu" (fright dragon), the term used for "Dinosaur".
  • Under translation, "Abaren'oh", "Killeroh", "Maxryuuoh", "OoAbaren'oh" means "Riot Union King", "Killer King", "Max Dragon King", "Great Riot Union King" respectively.

Evoliens

  • Evolien is a word combination of 'EVOlution' and 'aLIEN'.
  • Each Trinoid's name is a combination of "Components" from its Japanese name.

Trivia

  • All the episode titles featured the word "Abare". (see below)
  • Tsuyoshi Hayashi (Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger's Houji) auditioned to play Nakadai/AbareKiller.
    • In a strange twist of fate, Yasuhiko Imai, the suit actor for AbareKiller, was also the suit actor for DekaBlue, Houji's designation on the team.
  • Asuka/AbareBlack is the first regular Sentai warrior who doesn't take part in the giant battles since Goggle Five's Goggle Black and Goggle Pink; he only fought in a few battles (merging with Stego or borrowing Styraco as Brachio wasn't able of holding a fight). He has to his credit, however, the instance of having defeated single-handedly a giant monster (Giganoid #2).
  • The actor who played the human form of Volcano Org from Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger plays a recurring customer at Ryuunosuke's restaurant.
  • Episode 10 was watched by Abaranger's American counterparts in an episode of Power Rangers: Dino Thunder, titled Lost and Found in Translation. The plot of the original episode was changed almost entirely during the dub to make it more comical (i.e. when Lije zaps Jeanne she chastizes her for stealing her hairspray, one character has a thick Irish accent, etc.). The episode was intended to sound as if the Japanese show was based off the American one, rather than the other way around. The characters' name changed in the dub. Not all of the characters' names were mentioned.
    • Asuka — Mikey
    • Yukito Sanjou — Kenny Yukito
    • "Bucky" Barns — Whacker Wilson
    • Yokota — Mr. O'Shaugnessy
    • Jeanne — Missy
    • Torinoid #9 Bank Mushroom — Ka-Ching

Notes

Template:Ent "Bakuryuu (爆竜, Bakuryū)" when literally translated means "Blast Dragon." This is actually a portmanteau of the Japanese words "baku ()" which means "blast" and "kyouryuu (恐竜, kyōryū)" which means "dinosaur" (the main theme of the series). In English, this roughly translates into "Blastasaur," a portmanteau of "blast" and "dinosaur." Template:Ent The name "Abaranger" is a portmanteau of Abare (in the show, an acronym that stands for Attack Bandit Resistance; in Japanese, the term "abare" also means "riot", "rage", or "outburst" among other translations) and Ranger, so the romanization can be either Abaranger or Abarenger.
