The South Shall Rise Again

In the documentary "Civil War" produced by Brad Pitt and Henry Louis Gates Jr. there are a number of edifying clips that highlight the history of Reconstruction and the persistent Southern attitudes towards Civil War history. I am struck by the intransigence of many white southerners who refuse to acknowledge the significance of slavery and the influence of racism on the cultural milieu that articulated itself in the Confederacy. While the Night Riders, Ku Klux Klan, Jim Crow, and other components of Southern culture during this period were referred to in this video, I did not hear the theme of "the South Will Rise Again" referred to explicitly. John Pierre Anderson (talk) 04:34, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any questions about editing Wikipedia specifically? WhoAteMyButter (📨talk📝contribs) 04:47, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
John Pierre Anderson, I saw the same documentary and was impressed by it. But Wikipedia is not a forum for discussing things like this. The only valid thing that we discuss is how to improve encyclopedia articles. There are many social media sites where you can share your general thoughts, but Wikipedia is not one of them. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:06, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question about languages in the Main Page

Why are some languages shown in the sidebar of the Main Page, but not on the "Wikipedia languages" section, and vice versa? /gen For example, Bengali and Georgian are shown in the sidebar, but not the WP languages section, and Asturian is shown in that section, but not the sidebar. Dazzling Gleam (talk | contributions) 12:34, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Both the main page sidebar list of languages and the Wikipedia languages section is a subset of the total number of existing Wikipedias. I think they are supposed to be the same subset, so maybe it's just a matter of someone adding a language to one template and not the other. The sidebar is described at Template:Main_Page_interwikis and the Languages at Template:Wikipedia languages; both templates have talk pages where requests for adding new entries can be made. --bonadea contributions talk 21:57, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Proxy issue

Hello Wikipedians at the teahouse, I have an issue that I will like you to help me on.

My IP address was blocked from editing in turn blocking me due to an open proxy on my Opera Mini and this constantly happens even after I appeal the block.

My questions are;

1. How do you I turn off proxy on my Opera Mini on mobile?

2. Why do the admins temporarily unblock me then block me again because I asked these questions due to me being temporarily unblocked?

Thank you. Josedimaria237 (talk) 17:54, 28 October 2021 (UTC) Josedimaria237 (talk) 17:54, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Josedimaria237 Your registered account has never been blocked (see here), but the IP address(es) used by Opera's VPN will be blocked. I have experienced this myself when using Opera, so would use other browsers under those circumstances. As to Q1, that is something for you to Google to find the answer yourself, I fear. As to Q2, I suspect that Opera changes the IP address it uses for its VPN from time to time, so these new ones would then get blocked. Best solution is to always be logged in when editing Wikipedia, and not through a browser using a VPN. I hope this addresses your questions. Nick Moyes (talk) 18:06, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Nick Moyes: Does Opera Mini use VPN because I don't use VPN? I am always logged in on Wikipedia. Josedimaria237 (talk) 18:11, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Josedimaria237 I can't comment on Opera Mini, but my Windows desktop Opera browser does (or at least that's how it always runs on my system). You'd have to give us some of the IP addresses that you say were blocked, but your own user account never has been. Bear in mind I'm not hugely technical, so others may have different opinions to offer here. Nick Moyes (talk) 18:16, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Josedimaria237 and Nick Moyes: IIRC, Opera Mini routes internet traffic through their own servers in order to reduce data usage significantly; I used it when I had a quite limited data plan, but I was not a Wikipedian back then. I guess that is why on our side it is showing as a VPN instead of using the actual IP address. Not sure if that feature can be turned off, though. –FlyingAce✈hello 18:54, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Nick Moyes and FlyingAce: So what are your advice? Should I stop using Opera Mini to edit Wikipedia? Josedimaria237 (talk) 19:24, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Josedimaria237: Are you having issues while logged in? Like Nick mentioned, your account doesn't have any history of blocks, so I believe you should be able to edit while logged in. Give it a try and let us know how it goes :) –FlyingAce✈hello 04:35, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Josedimaria237 Personally, I would not use Opera, but would choose a browser that does not hide my IP address. Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Ecosia all work fine for me, but not Opera. I use the latter for specific occasions when I want to hide my IP address. Nick Moyes (talk) 07:19, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New article

What are the minimum basic source to write an article about a person? is Newspaper, websites, or Internet source okay? I heard that, last 6 months news coverage was needed, is it right? What about most senior technicians but they don't have any news coverage previously? Some people were really popular but didn't have news coverage or in Wikipedia, how we handle that. Induvadhone (talk) 01:22, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Induvadhone! you may be looking for WP:NOTABILITY, and generally yes you would need significant coverage in reliable sources (not just passing mentions) to be considered notable, so for instance people who are popular but didn't receive enough significant news coverage wouldn't be notable enough for wikipedia. however aside from that, any kind of source is allowed, just as long that it is reliable. happy editing!   melecie   t 01:50, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Induvadhone Hello and welcome to the teahouse. You are writing about a person, so you should (as well as Wikipedia:Notability) read up on Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. Signed,Pichemist (Talk) 08:17, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Advice how to archive a talk page

How do you archive your own talk page? Thanks. XXzoonamiXX (talk) 05:22, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You need an Archive Bot. GoodDay (talk) 05:23, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@XXzoonamiXX: Welcome to the Teahouse. Here's a page that talks about archiving on here; if you would like your talk page to be automatically archived, read this section. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 05:51, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes in regards to the latter ones, I'm a bit confused how to set that up. When it says "Archive This", what does that supposed to mean? XXzoonamiXX (talk) 05:57, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@XXzoonamiXX: If you're talking about User:ClueBot III, you can just add {{subst:User:ClueBot III/JustArchiveThis}} to the top of your user talk page if you don't want to tweak the settings. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 06:02, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So if I have 35 talk pages for example, how do you archive this? XXzoonamiXX (talk) 06:28, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@XXzoonamiXX In my view, article talk pages only need to be archived if they are unmanageably long. Being able to immediately ascertain whether there have, or have not, been discussions about the article is very helpful. Making an editor check the archives unnecessarily is not. Remember, these 35 pages are not ‘’your’’ talk pages, but available to all editors, and of the ones I’ve looked at, none of these merit archiving at this stage. Which ones were you concewrned about - or maybe you are just thinking ahead? Nick Moyes (talk) 07:36, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm thinking ahead so I don't have to come here again and ask again. I just want to know how to do it rather than doing so at the last moment when I need it so I don't get caught off. XXzoonamiXX (talk) 08:17, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@XXzoonamiXX: - you don't have to have a bot archive your user talk page. You can do it manually. I archive mine manually. Mjroots (talk) 09:24, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mjroots:, all right, how do it manually then? XXzoonamiXX (talk) 17:10, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@XXzoonamiXX: Just create the supbpage of your user talk page (such as User talk:XXzoonamiXX/Archive 1 and cut material from your talk page and paste into the archive. Mjroots (talk) 17:25, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mjroots: So like creating the subpage is like creating your own article? How do you create their own subpage? XXzoonamiXX (talk) 19:02, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@XXzoonamiXX: Yes, just like that. Would you like me to create an archive page for you? Mjroots (talk) 06:14, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mjroots: Well, since I don't want to ask question to question, then please yes! XXzoonamiXX (talk) 08:52, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

See Help:Archiving a talk page. I suggest either using a bot to create "Sequentially numbered archives", or as alternative "Archives by year and month". There are other options to create indexes, but personally I just use sequentially numbered archives set to archive after 183 days (half a year) with no indexing just a search in the archives box. — PBS (talk) 10:41, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help with understanding deletion

Hello Firstly I am a new editor. I read up each section and printed the info relating to edit, photo and referencing to get it as right as I could.

Handed down in the family are Alf Collins documents and photos etc which are all over 100 years old and are based on fact of this Victorian/Edwardian film pioneer. Sadly there is little known in the public domain and he is known to the film world as the Forgotten Film Pioneer.

Wikipedia seemed the ideal place to introduce Alf.

Referencing 100 year old information was going to be a challenge and decided to start with an event held in 2014 called Gaumont Comes Home which was supported by BFI (British Film Institute)and it brought Alf Collins back into the online history books.

We have no monetary gain in any way and we are not employed by anybody. We are using facts not assumptions.

We have no idea at all how to move forward. We cannot even see the article to amend it. We have no idea what you want us to amend or what is ok! Or how to do it. Even the Photo of Alf was deleted and we do not understand why.

Can you help us please we are not terribly IT savy and find your instructions hard to follow.

Thank you Alfred Collins Archive (talk) 09:57, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Alfred Collins Archive Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. The article exists at Alf Collins. Your edits are still in the edit history([1]) even though they were removed from the article. I would note that if "Alfred Collins Archive" is an organization, you will need to change your username at Special:GlobalRenameRequest or WP:CHUS; accounts are for individuals(though you don't need to use your real name).
Wikipedia is a place to summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about a topic. It isn't a place to just tell about someone, nor is it a place to post content derived from sources that are not avaiable to the public for verification. Note this does not mean the sources have to be online, but they do need to be available to the public- documents or sources in private hands are not acceptable for Wikipedia content. If you just want to share your information with the world, you should do so on social media or a website that you own and operate. (free webhosting can often be found) If you do have publicly available sources, I would suggest posting on the article talk page (Talk:Alf Collins) a formal edit request(by including {{request edit}} in your post) detailing the changes you are interested in making and the sources you have to support them. 331dot (talk) 10:10, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If i want to revert

If i want to revert a correction to my edit? Hello, I m new so i want to be sure about how to behave. I m an experienced content manager and copy writer with an obsession to see the right wording and this situation really bugs me:

For example lets say, i've added an adjective to a sentence which totally seems right. Even according to the "Wikipedia definition" of the word, it is perfect. And it is an important adjective to differentiate the object's existing property from the upcoming effects of the verb. Then, someone deletes it saying it is wrong. There's an explanation but it does not add up. I definitely think the wording was right and important. I can prove it with the Wiki page of the term, and also i can list 10 more reasons why. Do i have the right to put it back and write a new explanation to my edit, or should i let it go and just be sad because someone deleted my edit without a proper reason (except obviously a personal, nationalist, or racist cause). Or even worse, do i get reported or banned for reverting a correction back because i still believe it is right? Alasiyan (talk) 10:24, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Alasiyan Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. In this situation, the best thing to do is go to the article talk page(from looking at your edit history, probably Talk:Timeline of Cypriot history) to discuss the situation and attempt to arrive at a consensus. 흋ㅎ흋User:Darkdeath-2흋ㅎ흋 13:26, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Darkdeath-2, it makes no difference whether you understand the reason for a reversion or not; it makes no difference whether your edit was right or wrong or anything else. It makes no difference whether you change the wording a bit. If somebody reverts your edit and you reapply it without discussion, then you are edit-warring. Russian Wiki

Any known issues of political censorship on Russian Wiki? Hi guys of English speaking wiki, please let me cry on your shoulder for a minute, I really need it))) So I've tried for the last month or so to create a wiki page, on Russian Wikipedia about a very well-known racial murder on video case posted by russian neo nazis back in 2007. Got deleted. Not "important" enough. There are hundreds of wiki pages in Russian language about racial murder cases in other countries - US, IK, Australia, you name it. EXCEPT for Russia. As if there're no xenophobic murders here. Is it me being paranoid? Before me, other people tried to write a page about this murder, going back to 2008. All got deleted. This is not some unknown murder. This video was viral back in the days, there was a documentary shot about this case in 2015... What's going on here? P.S. I wrote political censorship because there was a paragraph on my now deleted page that summarized the conclusion of a filmmaker who investigated this case back in 2015, and named the murder back in 2015, (confirmed by russian police in 2021) who linked this murder case to a rise of ethnic murders before the presidential elections of 2008. Ghost of Shamil (talk) 12:11, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, on en-WP there is some coverage of Shamil Odamanov: [2]. Could you add something similar on ru-WP? Based on sources like [3][4][5][6], I think it may be possible (on en-WP) to make a WP:GNG-compliant article about the video. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:28, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Gråbergs Gråa Sång The page I created had many dozens of links to trustworthy news websites both in English and Russian. They saw it. These guys over there, they just don't care. They delete it automatically. I think I'll have to make a page on en_WP. Ghost of Shamil (talk) 14:08, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Just for a moment, let's concede that it's imaginable that a serious problem is pervasive in this or that Wikipedia. After all, (1) it's universally acknowledged that at least one has already occurred (a non-political problem, as it happens). And (2), during the last few years there has been convincing evidence of state-backed troll farms working to misinform the public. So it wouldn't be surprising if this-or-that-language Wikipedia were seriously corrupted. Appealing to that Wikipedia's "teahouse" or similar would I think be pointless, GoingBatty. Complaints should be directed to the WMF. Unfortunately the WMF's website does nothing to encourage such whistleblowing. (This is perhaps understandable, given the likelihood of troll-farm-generated complaints: spluttering denunciations of Wikipedia's connivance in the (fictional) "big steal", and similar wingnuttery.) The end of the Scots Wikipedia debacle started with, or anyway could be attributed to, a post in Reddit. Perhaps it's difficult for material at Reddit to be taken seriously, Ghost of Shamil, and an alternative host such as Medium might be better. Design your argument well, back it up with plenty of evidence (but keep it digestible; a difficult balance to achieve), work on it carefully, and hope that the result of this catches the eyes of investigative journalists working for the non- (or less-) compromised mass media: these may influence the WMF. Good luck! -- Hoary (talk) 23:34, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fuad Hamza page

Hi, i tried to correct erroneous information on Fuad Hamza's page, but an editor has undone the update i had done. It was written that Fuad Hamza was from Palestine, and the proof presented for this was from a single source, a PhD that had it wrong. Fuad Hamza is a famous personality in Lebanon's history, and hails from the village of Aabay in Lebanon. There is also further below a reference that he was a Druze from Syria -- which is also wrong.

I presented this evidence, which thought was recent:

https://today.lorientlejour.com/article/1262053/lebanon-saudi-arabia-the-story-of-a-family-rupture.html

You can also find in various respected resources that Fuad Hamza is a member of the Druze community in Lebanon: 1-https://books.google.ae/books?id=oCeA299j1rsC&pg=PA77&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=hamza&f=false Page 340 2-https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA111290.pdf Page 57

Unless I did something technically wrong as an editor in the way I tried to correct this?

CITATION

HELP CITATION

Hi everyone,

We have English profile for the company named ZSSK (Link : https://www.zssk.sk/en/) in Slovakia for the main purpose - manage the actual information about the company and upgrade the data, which can help the customers and the habitant as well for the project or for their own knowledge.

I had tried to change and update the newest data and information about the ZSSK profile in the English version. Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%BDelezni%C4%8Dn%C3%A1_spolo%C4%8Dnos%C5%A5_Slovensko

I had tried to give after every paragraph citation with the source. I found out that you recommend "Avoid embedded links". Unfortunately, mandatory of sources are web links. Do you mind giving me advice and showing examples of how to make it correctly?

@ZSSK general hello and welcome to the Teahouse, pardon me and correct me if I’m not assimilating or interpreting this correctly, are you saying that you intend to add a source in order to aid customers? In what capacity are you seeking to aid this customers? If it is in anyway promotional then I’m afraid Wikipedia isn’t for such purposes. In any case to cite properly please read WP:REFB and WP:CITE. Celestina007 (talk) 14:29, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ZSSK general: (edit conflict) Hello and Welcome to the Teahouse. I am afraid I have to tell you that Wikipedia has encyclopedic Articles (not profiles, that is a social media term, but we are not social media), as in this case about ZSSK. Any article on Wikipedia should almost entirely based on what independent, reliable sources have written about the subject, in this case ZSSK. Wikipedia articles are not controlled by the subject, and not for the benefit of the subject (although that might be a side effect). I see you have declared paid, however, I am afriad that you need to change your username, because we don't allow usernames soely consisting of a company name, nor role accounts. You can use either WP:CHUS or Special:GlobalRenameRequest to request a change. With regards to citations, Wikipedia makes a distinction between plain links embed into the article text like this one, and inline citations which will look similar to this:[1]. The second format is allowed, this first one is not. See Help:Referencing for beginners for more details. Victor Schmidt (talk) 14:31, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What is --- > " | " called?

Also, I came up with a little mnemonic that helps me to remember the brackets order, "the first part of the brackets is where a link GOES, the next part is what it SHOWS".... Plagiarism isn’t allowed in Wikipedia right? I found a section in the Main Street electrical parade where it is just a copy and paste of what Disney fandom says, and I can’t site disney fandom because that’s not a good source. Kaleeb18 (talk) 14:51, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarism is of course not permitted here but when dealing with other user-generated content such as Fandom wikis, it's always worth checking to see which way round it goes--you should be able to see from the page histories here and there which version was created first; if it's ours then it should be kept, if ours has been copied after theirs was written, remove it. 𝄠ʀᴀᴘᴘʟᴇ 14:55, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Note also that there is a subtle difference between plagiarism and copyright violations. They often go hand-in-hand but are different.
"Plagiarism" is the act of presenting ideas as original even though they were taken from another source; it is unethical, and contrary to Wikipedia (and academic) guidelines of citing sources, but slapping a cite to the plagiarized source solves the biggest part of the problem.
Copyright violations occur when the wording of a given piece of text is identical or closely paraphrases another source. This occurs even if the source is acknowledged. That is a problem with legal repercussions, and the only remedy is rapid removal of the text, so pages with copyvios should be addressed urgently. See Wikipedia:Copyright_violations#Parts_of_article_violate_copyright for how to deal with it as a non-admin. Don't know how to report suspected vandalism on the English page for Nelson Mandela

Hello (& Thank you)

I was reading this page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_Mandela

And on the Info Box of the page, it states that as "19th Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement" he was preceded by 'another Colombian ex-president!'.

Don't know how to track down if it is an act of vandalism or some mistake?. But since this is a semi-protected page, with apparently lots of attempts of vandalism, better to check with someone who knows well the ropes here, and who can edit it there is a mistake.

I'll be very happy to read if someone reads this message (my first time here).

Best Wishes to all & Keep on Rocking for the Free World! Cheers.. PJ Pearl Jam (talk) 18:05, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PJ Pearl Jam: The article at Andrés Pastrana Arango confirms that he was the 18th Secretary General, so if that's vandalism it's pretty extensive.... Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:16, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PJ Pearl Jam, the talk page for Mandela is likely to be active, so I would start a discussion at Talk:Nelson Mandela. If you provide links to reliable sources that back up your viewpoint, others will likely agree to change it. Cheers, {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:23, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)PJ Pearl Jam, on the broader question, the place to report ongoing vandalism is Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Talk: Nelson Mandela is the place to discuss this specific issue. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:25, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, please don't. We all make mistakes but the convention is not to delete entries on Talk Pages. If you change your mind about something you can use strike out to show that in your own previous comment. Mike Turnbull (talk) 19:21, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Adding photograph of business taken from sidewalk

Hello Teahouse users,

I am very new to Wikipedia (editing pages as part of a school assignment), and have a question about adding images to existing articles.

I took a photograph from the sidewalk of the front of a cafe that I enjoy that has a Wikipedia page. There are some pedestrians and cafe-goers included in the photo. Am I allowed to add this to the cafe's page?

My more general question is, can I add photos that I myself take of businesses that do not include trademarks or logos from a public space (the sidewalk)? And, what about photos taken in the interior of the business?

Many thanks for any guidance on this. Clayrey (talk) 18:21, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Clayrey! So the world of copyright is utterly bonkers rather complex, so the answer is that it depends whether or not your country has freedom of panorama, and if not there are complexities. But from the Simmons tag on your user page, I'm guessing you may be in the U.S., in which case the answer is simpler: yes, you can add the photo. Just go to the upload wizard and choose the "own work" option for the license, and then add it to the article (let us know if you need any help with the process; there's some info at Help:Introduction to images with VisualEditor/Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup) It would be great to have a photo for a previously unillustrated article! {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:32, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the people in the photo, if they are prominent, you could add the commons:Template:Personality rights tag to the Commons page, but that's optional. Regarding images that include trademarks/logos, I'm not too sure about that, but my (poorly educated) guess would be that it's okay so long as they are just incidentally included in the image rather than the focus of it. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:35, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdkb: Hi! Thank you very much for your speedy and informative response. I had previously checked out the Wikipedia freedom of panorama page, and was still pretty confused. So, your summarization of U.S. rules is much appreciated. And yes, I am looking forward to adding an image to the page of a business that I love, but that is hereto unillustrated!
Thank you again! Clayrey (talk) 18:53, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Clayrey I wonder: are you interested in adding images to other Wikipedia articles that exist near to your location? If so, there's a really neat tool to help you locate them on a map. I could dig out the link if you are interested (though right this moment it has escaped me, but I'd be happy to get back to you on that. Just let me know.) Nick Moyes (talk) 20:50, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
One way to see them (though not the one I was thinking of) is to go Special:Nearby and allow it to use your location to list article. Nick Moyes (talk) 20:54, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
One of the mappable methods I was thinking of is to use https://copernix.io/ This is also useful for checking the coordinates given in an article, as well as checking to see if it already has a good photo. If you find your favourite shop is shown in the middle of a lake (or vice versa) then the coordinates need fixing in the article. There's another tool I know I've seen, and wanted to recommend, but can't lay my hands on the link right now, sorry. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:03, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Clayrey: If you use the Wikipedia App, the Places feature shows you a map of nearby locations that have Wikipedia articles. Zooming in a little shows whether the article has a photo or not. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 21:17, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Echoing Grapple X, furthermore, @Trakinwiki, no, non admins can only close AFD’s if any criterion from WP:CSK is met, say for example, the amount of keep !votes are overwhelming within a very short span, then it can be closed as Speedy Keep, see WP:CSK once again to understand what I’m saying, asides that no they can’t, that would generally fall under WP:BADNAC If an AFD has run its course without participants it is treated as an expired prod and it is soft deleted. Furthermore if you are suspecting an IP address & the creator of the article to be one and the same person, and commenting simultaneously in an AFD, that is a form of socking to WP:GAME the output of an AFD, which is quite a serious transgression on this project. you can file an official report at WP:SPI. You can visit the article's talk page and use the template {{Request edit}} to specify what you'd like to see changed. Another editor can then either concur with the request and make the edit, or disagree and discuss it with you. Hello! So while looking at the Liberty Mutual page (which I came across via Special:Random), in the advertising section it mentions that the character "Doug" in their TV commercials is played by actor David Hoffman, however the link to David Hoffman links to the disambig page for people with the name and I can't tell which of the people (if any) on the disambig page is the intended target as none of their brief descriptions describes them as an actor. So what should I do in this case? Remove the link or is there a template I can use to signify that the disambig page target is unclear? ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:22, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My University's Wiki is horribly out of date. What can I do?

I am an employee of Fairleigh Dickinson University, which has a wiki entry here. Our University underwent a major restructuring, including the elimination of college and the additions of smaller specialized schools. I need to have that information changed.

In addition, our web servers have been changed, so any citations that linked to our older webpages are now dead. Can I put in new links for these leading to the same information?

I sae that the changes should be listed in a talk message. Because they are quite extensive, I wanted to check with you first. Please let me know how to proceed.

Rebecca Maxon at Fairleigh Dickinson University Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. An editor has posted some information about this on your user talk page, I think it will answer your questions. In short, you should propose edits on the article talk page. Before that, you will need to make a formal paid editing disclosure. Please be aware that the main purpose of a Wikipedia article is to summarize independent reliable sources. 331dot (talk) 20:07, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Rebecca Maxon at Fairleigh Dickinson University: When you post on Talk:Fairleigh Dickinson University, I suggest you take it slowly, as some editors may respond better to making a small change than a large rewrite. Start with posting your most important change with a reliable source. When that change has been made, then post your second most important suggestion. This will take longer, but hopefully will be more successful for you. Hope this helps, and thanks for your desire to improve Wikipedia! GoingBatty (talk) 21:26, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Energy Table in Wikipedia

Hi everyone! I work for a non-profit called Aspen Global Change Institute (AGCI). Over the last 6 years, we have curated an online resource called the Energy Table (agci.org/energy_table), a comprehensive table for global energy statistics, ranging from the availability of energy sources to energy storage data. Each data point is individually referenced and linked to the online reference, there is a glossary that describes all of the terms in this table, and each energy resource can also be further explored. There is a curriculum available with a number of questions that use the data from the table, aimed at students who want to learn more about global energy statistics.

Some lessons we have learned from it: It's unique: There is not a comprehensive energy data online resource such as this; it functions as a one-stop-shop for updated energy data. It's valuable: Students, consultants, and the general public have access to updated quality statistics produced by world-leading scientific organizations. It's hard for AGCI to maintain: AGCI has done maintenance for the past 6 years, updating data points once/year. It takes us many hours to review and update the data points, and many data points could be updated more frequently. It could be reaching a broader audience: While we have seen consistent visits over the years, we know that this resource has the potential to reach a much broader audience.

Because of these lessons, I believe the energy table would fit better in Wikipedia. This would increase its use as well as the data updating schedule, which would make it more precise and accurate.

I do not have much experience with uploading content to Wikipedia, so I would appreciate it if experienced volunteers could let me know if what I have in mind is viable, and what would be the best approach to getting it done.

Thank you very much for your comments, ideas, suggestions, and contributions! MartinBonzi (talk) 21:25, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@MartinBonzi Hi Martin, and welcome to the Teahouse, and thank you for your most unusual and interesting post. If I understand you correctly, rather than hoping for an article about your organisation, you'd be interested in moving this very large data table (based upon numerous reliably published international sources) from your own website to one maintained on Wikipedia? At first sight, that might seem counter-intuitive, but I can see a rationale for making summary data on global energy sources much more widely available on Wikipedia in the relevant article. (I haven't checked, but maybe there is already something akin to it, albeit much simpler than your own?). I do know that other scientists have in the past made similar decisions to publish detailed information on Wikipedia so as to make it more widely available. (For example, some years ago the Sanger institute at Cambridge decided to publish all its human genome and protein data on Wikipedia some years ago, and I created a very short video interview with someone involved in that project, which shows that Wikipedia can be used by serious scientific research as well as for general education. See HERE at 6min 25 secs in).
I do have some concerns with your idea. One is that it looks immensely complex - possibly too complex for Wikipedia, and would not only need the same level of maintenance to keep it up to date, but would potentially be prone to the routine vandalism we get - so monitoring for that would be essential. Wikipedia is only in English, and a better route for managing data like this could be done through a related Wikimedia Foundation project, known as WIKIDATA. Unfortunately I have no real knowledge of Wikidata myself, but believe this could be an avenue far more worth exploring, as it has many potential uses, and data held within it can be used in multiple languages. So, I'm going to ping User:Ainali who is a whizz in that field, and also has strong interests in Sustainability and Climate Change (see also Wikipedia:WikiProject Energy and m:Wikimedians_for_Sustainable_Development). He might wish to comment.
Now, I'm not sure I can help you much further myself - and I suspect some Wikipedia editors might think your proposal wouldn't work here at all. But I do think there's potential to explore it further, especially as the topics that your data tables relate to are definitely WP:NOTABLE in themselves, though I'm not sure which other doors to recommend you push at. I suspect you may already know what current articles cite data taken from your collated datatables or use the original sources, or even which articles here could be improved by accessing the better sources that your academic team curates. So, creating a list of these could, itself, be helpful in any discussions. I hope this reply is at least not totally discouraging and proves to be of some use to you and your team of academics. Elenatina: I assume this is about Draft:Jonathan Roumie. What follows is not official advice. Maybe your problem is not "initiating" a review, but inducing a reviewer who has started examining the draft to persist. The main concern of any reviewer will be "does this draft cite several reliable published independent sources with enough discussion of the subject to establish that the subject is notable?" If I were a reviewer (I am not), my thoughts would be "the first ref gives a 404 message. The second is behind a paywall. The third and fourth report what the subject has said, so are not independent. And there's another 34 to check. I'll leave this one in the waiting list and find another, easier draft to review."
If you've cited some good sources that do establish notability, you could make it easier for a reviewer to find them, by removing those that don't. Maproom (talk) 09:33, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How do I format an image on a custom userbox?

I was having fun customizing my userpage with various userboxes to experiment. I decided to make my own because, well, it's an open source platform. So I went to Wikipedia:Userboxes to copy code because I'm lazy. So I copied it over, put my joke about Cincinnati chili, and went on. But once I got to the id, I wanted to put in an image. So I tried an image of the aforementioned food, but it was huge. So I tried putting the wanted pixel ratio before the image name, but it didn't work. In the end I settled for copying the use this file button on commons and putting it on my userbox. The formatting is all messed up but it's the best I can do right now. Mohammad Arif Hasan (talk) I looked at Draft:Makanpur, Fatehpur district and learned that the village exists, and that males and females live there, but I didn't learn why this village is different than any other location. When did Makanpur become a village? Who were the first people to settle there? Are there any businesses located there? Did a notable person ever live there?
You can't just write down what you know because you live there, you need to tell in your own words what others have written and gotten published. Is there a local newspaper that has written articles about the history of the village? Did someone publish a book about Fatehpur district or Uttar Pradesh that has a page that tells about the village? Is there a government document that reports on a school in Makanpur? You need to find references that tell something about the village, then you need to use your own words to add that to the draft you started, and add a reference that will let readers know where the information came from. Writing an article is hard work, and it may take you weeks to find good references that tell about your village. Take your time and find what you need so you can improve your draft and resubmit it for review. A reviewer has written that if the draft is resubmitted rapidly again it may be nominated for deletion, and you might not be able to work on the draft anymore to try and improve it. It is important for you to take as much time as is needed to find published sources for information about your village. Karenthewriter (talk) 04:55, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean, is it legal to have more than one account: yes, but it is usually not recommended. If you really need to have more than one account, you should declare all of your alternative accounts as detailed on Using multiple accounts. It sounds like you should also read User account security.
You usually cannot delete an account. ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 08:08, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thank you. I was really worried about Sockpuppetry policy that if it would delete my accounts. Thank you again for ensuring me.  Ahp101  To discuss? 08:20, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ahp101 That is not an acceptable reason for creating a second account! If this account “gets into trouble” and is blocked by an admin like me, you would not be permitted to use any other account until the block period had expired. Equally, if you’re worried about being hacked, simply choose a stronger password, and register an email address in the event you forget it. A valid reason for using a second, alternate account (which would be if you wanted occasionally to edit from an insecure public WiFi hotspot. The link between (and the purpose for) each account should be ‘’very’’ clear. Using both at once would open you to being permanently blocked from all editing as a WP:SOCKPUPPET, so proceed with caution, please. Should you ‘’genuinely’’ believe this reason applies to you, I suggest you remove all userboxes from the alternate account, pointing properly to you current name of account (not the DowerHussain redirect), and make it clear all comments and notices should go on Ahp101. @Ahp101 Simply decide whether you actually need it, then explain why you have it on its userpage. "Getting into trouble" is not a valid reason for it. Nick Moyes (talk) 12:50, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have thought that I don't need that account. I have faced no problems till now.  Ahp101  To discuss? 12:56, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Then simply abandon it, forget the password and never use it again. Ever. That is the best thing. Just remove the phrase first about 'getting into trouble' (though you can edit that account's userpage from your main account at any time. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:17, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to write about a "Group of companies" in wikipedia

I know a company like emaar and Damac, the company has 50 years of experience in UAE especially in sharjah. it will be good , if wikipedia has one article of that company, How can I write wikipedia article for that company. Is it possible to write a article in the name of that company. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marytwist (talkcontribs) 08:40, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think you can edit the existing articles by adding your reliable information if the information is not added in there.  Ahp101  To discuss? 09:14, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also if you wish to create an article of a company, please go to Wikipedia:Article Wizard and create an article. After completing it submit the draft for article review. And a reviewer will look into it. Make sure you article must comply all rules made per English Wikipedia policies. I hope you had got your answer @Marytwist:.Jyoti Roy (talk) 09:49, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Marytwist Hello and welcome to the teahouse. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't write an article about your own company. Refer to Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. Signed,Pichemist (Talk) 10:56, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It is not impossible to do while following rules and guidelines, but rarely successful. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:51, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Marytwist: Before you create a new article, it would be very helpful to get more experience editing existing articles. I suggest starting with Help:Introduction and The Wikipedia Adventure. When you're ready to create an article, see also WP:NCORP and Help:Your first article. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 03:00, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Locate previous article for specific edit numbers within my contributions.

Is there a way to find a specific edit number's article within my contributions list? In other words, is it possible to locate the article for, let's say as an example, edit number 389? If so, what's the procedure (without something like Excel)? Do I need a bot? CYAce01 (talk) 14:48, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Teahouse, CYAce01. By edit number 389, do you mean your 389th edit? Cordless Larry (talk) 15:52, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Or any random "nth" edit. CYAce01 (talk) 17:16, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I've seen a tool that can do that, but others might know of something. Cordless Larry (talk) 18:28, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Review previously removed copy

Greetings, happy weekend. I just noticed a few days ago that a whole (middle) section of the Mood ring article was removed. Not sure I did it accidentally or not.... but how can I retrieve to at least loom at whet was once there? Thx again!!! Moodman001 (talk) 15:35, 30 October 2021 (UTC) Moodman001 (talk) 15:35, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

View history shows all earlier edits in chronological order. Clicking on "prev" on the left shows the exact changes (additions or deletions). Given your conflict of interest as the (claimed) inventor of the Mood Ring, you are prohibited from editing the article directly. Instead, you are instructed to propose changes on the Talk page of the article, so that a non-involved editor can decide to include or not. See Wikipedia:Edit requests for process. I understand this sounds unfair.
By the way, this article has a contentious history dating back to 2004, including edits by a person (DreamBeliever2238) who claimed to be a child of the inventor. See Talk page. David notMD (talk) 16:46, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hello I want to add to a player how many games he has played and how many goals he has scored, it's about PFC Ludogorets Razgrad and A.C. Milan how it goes Stef4o90 (talk) 16:26, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Stef4o90, we apologize for taking a while before responding. If you want to update an article, go the article and just edit it by clicking on the “pen like image” having done so except the article is protected, you should be able to edit the article to reflect current statistics, the trick is to use reliable sources to substantiate your inputs. vote to merge?

How do I vote whether an article should be merged or not to another one? I see people here voting to merge, how do I do that? The Tips of Apmh (talk) 18:06, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@The Tips of Apmh Welcome to the Teahouse. By following the relevant link in the merge notice, you arrive at the discussion (you have already linked to one such example). Click 'edit' against that subject heading and copy the general format used by others. This is usually an asterisk (which creates a new bulleted line) followed by either Merge or Object in boldface, then your rationale for expressing that opinion. For example:
  • Merge I agree with the proposal because the page on its own is not really necessary, and merging would bring related content much closer together. (signed)
Then sign with four tilde characters in the normal way, and leave an edit summary: Merge/Object.
Does that help you? Nick Moyes (talk) 19:58, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes: As a mountaineer, you're quite familiar with snow. Thoughts on WP:SNOWBALLing the discussion there? It's been months, and there's no indication Uno H2O is even nearly notable enough for its own article. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 01:28, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes: Yes, that helps, thanks. I just didn't know whether I had to click a specific link to vote and it would automatically be formatted or something like that. --The Tips of Apmh (talk) 02:15, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Greater Manchester articles

The user https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Zynthetik#Your_edits

Thinks certain articles should be changed to suburbs of Manchester and that human settlement in England is bland boring and unhelpful.

I've said my reasons and why a concensus should be sought after before changing long established articles on wiki.

DragonofBatley (talk) 20:49, 30 October 2021 (UTC) DragonofBatley (talk) 20:49, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DragonofBatley hello, could you please not post the same question at diverse venues? I just replied you at ANI, but I don’t mind repeating myself, the appropriate venue for protecting articles as your question indicated at ANI, is WP:RFPP, that is a venue where you may want to file for a page to be protected. Celestina007 (talk) 21:15, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You and Zynthetik are disagreeing at several articles, including Middleton, Greater Manchester, and you have initiated a discussion on Z's Talk page. Article protection is a standard response to persistent vandalism, but I get the sense that both of you are editing in god faith. Please remain patient. Disagree with content, but do not be disagreeable toward other editors. David notMD (talk) 21:22, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Moving to draft

How do I move a deleted page to draft space? Australianblackbelt (talk) 23:59, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Australianblackbelt Welcome to the Teahouse. I'm afraid your question doesn't make sense to me. If a page has already been deleted by an administrator, then there is no longer anything available to be moved to draftspace. However, please see WP:REFUND. Often, moving a badly-formed article from mainspace to draftspace is a good way to avoid speedy deletion, but the reverse is not possible. Sorry. Nick Moyes (talk) 01:06, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Move a pending AfC from draft to articles space.

Hello, Can I move some pending AfCs from draft to articles space? Another question is why some AFCs have not been reviewed (accept or decline)after 2 weeks? Kidsonthemoon (talk) 00:58, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You have not created a draft that could be valid as an article, and you are not an AfC Reviewer, so answer is "No." Per the AfC notices, there is a backlog of thousands of submitted drafts, so could be days, weeks, months for a review (the system is not a queue). David notMD (talk) 01:11, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your answer.
I'll try to help Wikipedia with smaller edits. Kidsonthemoon (talk) 01:18, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kidsonthemoon welcome to the Teahouse. Please leave the moving of draft articles into article space to more experienced editors. With just 39 edits here, I'm not sure your efforts would necessarily be appreciated by others. There are over 2,000 articles pending for review, and it can often take many weeks for one to be reviewed and dealt with. Nick Moyes (talk) 01:10, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your answer.
I decided to try to help Wikipedia as much as I can when I browse Wikipedia.
And I asked this question to know if it would be helpful if I made a change in this area as well.
Kidsonthemoon (talk) 01:17, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Kidsonthemoon. In addition to what's been commented here, I want to say that wanting to jump in the deep end like this right from the get-go and help clear out the AfC backlog is really admirable. Seriously do come back when you have some more experience under your belt; I'm sure you'd make a great AfC reviewer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheTechnician27 (talkcontribs) 01:43, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Draft Help on Larry Pretlow II

Looking for help on fixing the tone of Larry Pretlow II. All content is based on reserach on the subject. Seemed to meet notability. Learned of subject during reserach on school redistricting plans and came across more than expected on the subject. RobbieLawson (talk) 01:02, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My opinion is that Pretlow does not meet general notability nor politician notability, so no amount of revising this draft will lead to it being accepted. His discharge dispute with the U.S. Post Office does not make him notable, nor losing elections. David notMD (talk) 01:21, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Okay RobbieLawson (talk) 01:36, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How do I use the "interlanguage link" template such that only the foreign-language link shows while the actual text isn't a blue link? Right now I'm trying to do this for a German magazine called 'Video Games', and we don't have an article for it. However, it shows a blue link anyway because "video games" links straight to video game. Hopefully I explained this weird predicament okay. Basically: Video Games [de], but I'd like the word 'Video Games' not to link to video game; is this even possible? Thanks. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 01:19, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@TheTechnician27: Hmm, that is an interesting predicament. One option would be to use Video Games [de], if you think the article in English would ultimately belong at Video Games (magazine). But honestly, the best option would probably be to just make a stub and tag it with {{Expand German}}. Cheers, {{u|Sdkb}}talk 02:04, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdkb: Unfortunately, I don't think it would qualify for a stub here on the English Wikipedia were I to make it. The best source I can find about it is this article in a German trade publication, and there's not really much else. I'm not German, so there may be more out there (English-language sources would likely be a needle in a haystack for obvious reasons), but as a new page patroller, I couldn't even mark the stub I would make as patrolled since it wouldn't even have two reliable, independent sources. I'd imagine someone out there could do that, though, so I'll just create a red link in the interim and let Ward Cunningham's eventualist philosophy work its magic. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 02:13, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TheTechnician27, You're advised: the best option would probably be to just [[WP:Make stubs|make a stub]] and tag it with {{tl|Expand German}}. Uhhh ... the article would then say "This article may be expanded with text translated from the corresponding article in German." This risks being misinterpreted as suggesting that the German article merits translation. (It does not.) The template would better say "This article may be slightly expanded with text translated from that little within the corresponding article in German that's adequately referenced." But to my knowledge no such template exists. -- Hoary (talk) 12:58, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Roger Allen was murdered by Daly City, CA police on April 7, 2021 rather than April 13, 2021.

The IP is correct. The existing source clearly shows that the event was on April7 (the coverage is dated April 13).
Please link to the article in question next time. I have corrected the date in Daly City, California and rewritten the poorly written section in question [8]. Meters (talk) 04:54, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Added a more recent source which clarifies things [[9]]. I don't know that this belongs in the History section of the article, but at least now it no longer uses the POV and incorrect term "murdered". Meters (talk) 05:14, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Meters, I truly doubt that this is the most important event of the last 37 years in a city of over 100,000 residents, especially since no charges were filed and there is no Wikipedia article about this particular tragic death. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:29, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
