Brandon Municipal Airport (also known as Brandon Airport or McGill Field) (IATA: YBR, ICAO: CYBR) is an airport located 4 nautical miles (7.4 km; 4.6 mi)[1] north of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. It serves the City of Brandon and the surrounding regions of Western Manitoba and Eastern Saskatchewan, an area with a population of over 180,000 people.[5] The airport is classified as an airport of entry by Nav Canada and is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) on a call-out basis from the International Peace Garden Border Crossing.[6] CBSA officers at Brandon Airport can handle general aviation aircraft with no more than 15 passengers.[1]

Brandon Municipal Airport is home to the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum.

History

World War II

Brandon Aerodrome was originally built by the Department of National Defense in 1941, for use as a Royal Canadian Air Force flight training school under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Pilots were trained at the airport on Cessna Cranes and Avro Ansons, among other aircraft, for Second World War flying service. In 1945, the school was closed in conjunction with the end of the Second World War.

Portions of the former RCAF Station Brandon are now classified as a National Historic Site of Canada. The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum is a popular tourist attraction located at the airport that commemorates the BCATP and the former Station.[7]

Post-war service

Brandon Municipal Airport has had regularly scheduled passenger air service operated by a number of airlines since the 1980s. Perimeter Aviation served Brandon Airport in the early 1980s with one flight every weekday to Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport operated with a Beechcraft commuter aircraft.[8] Pacific Western Airlines introduced Boeing 737-200 service to Brandon Municipal Airport in the mid-1980s, operated on a round trip routing of VancouverKelownaCalgary–Brandon–Thunder BayToronto six days a week in each direction for a total of twelve jet departures a week.[9]

Two airlines were operating service to Winnipeg during the mid 1990s: Bearskin Airlines flying Beechcraft Model 99 commuter turboprop aircraft between Brandon Municipal Airport and Winnipeg International Airport with four flights on weekdays, and Perimeter Aviation flying Swearingen Metro commuter propjets with two flights on weekdays between Brandon and Winnipeg.[10] In 1999, Perimeter Aviation was operating one flight on the weekdays to Winnipeg with a Metro propjet while Athabaska Airlines was also operating one flight on the weekdays to Winnipeg with this service being flown with a Beechcraft 1900C commuter propjet.[11]

2000s

On September 3, 2013, WestJet Encore launched daily non-stop service from Brandon to Calgary International Airport operated with Bombardier Q400 aircraft.[12]

Infrastructure

Passenger terminal

The Brandon Municipal Airport passenger terminal building is a 1,730-square-metre (18,579 sq ft) facility designed by Prairie Architects Inc.[13] It is a Gold LEED-certified building for its green, sustainable and efficient design, construction and operation.[14][15]

Construction of the terminal building began in 2015, and was carried out in three phases.[16] Phase one saw the construction of 860 square metres (9,300 sq ft) of new terminal space that included a new arrival & departures hall, a new baggage-handling facility, modernized check-in infrastructure, and new baggage claim and carousel.[15] Phase two involved the renovation and redevelopment of the existing terminal building that had been constructed in 1963 on the site.[17] This included the addition of a new security screening area operated by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), a secure side departure lounge with new seating, new accessible washroom facilities, expanded self-serve retail options, and extensive energy efficiency improvements.[15] Phase three joined phases one and two within a 12 hour timeframe, without affecting daily operations at the airport.[15]

The new Brandon Municipal Airport terminal building was officially opened to the public on May 10, 2017.[18][19]
