Page widening

Page widening is a popular Internet troll on Slashdot.
This form of troll causes the width of the web page to widen to a
rediculous width (well beyond what you're seeing here)
to a point where one cannot conveniently read
anything without scrolling left-to-right to read a paragraph.

The first true page widening was an accident.
Someone posted a unix directory listing that looked
something like this:

.foo .bar .dir .bin .etc .and .on .and .on .foo .bar .dir .bin .etc .and .on .and .on .foo .bar .dir .bin .etc .and .on .and .on .foo .bar .dir .bin .etc .and .on .and .on .foo .bar .dir .bin .etc .and .on .and .on

A now-infamous troll by the name of Klerck used this little trick to make trolls such as:

.i .like .wide .pages .dont .you .like .wide .pages .and .on .and .on .i .like .wide .pages .dont .you .like .wide .pages .and .on .and .on .i .like .wide .pages .dont .you .like .wide .pages .and .on .and .on .i .like .wide .pages .dont .you .like .wide .pages .and .on .and .on .i .like .wide .pages .dont .you .like .wide .pages .and .on .and .on

These page widenings were eventually fixed after a considerable time
had passed because Slashdot supports open source software. Since
the exploit only worked with Internet Explorer and Netscape,
people using the open source browser Mozilla were not affected. They
gradually fixed it, and less than a week later a new widening troll appeared:

This page widener continues to work to this day.
