The "tab"
Hello, Prodego! Thanks for your response to the VP thread on my coding incompetence. Because of my lack of understanding of JS, I can't tell which part of your monobook.js codes for the warning system. Could you help me out in finding it? Thanks in advance, PTO 01:15, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
- Eureka! It works! Thanks a lot. Cheers, PTO 01:44, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
- I found that a little bit of rogue CSS that I had added before was blocking the warnings drop down menu. Now it's fixed and operational. Thanks again for your help. PTO 01:59, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Almost there
Well, I decided to make a user page made of all pictures, and then put all the pictures together and link the certain ones I need to for a new user page. <a href="http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/8844/sunsetuserpageyk4.jpg">This</a>is what my page is supposed to be like. I divided it all up into sections so it would work out, and they can be found on my Sandbox. I have it perfect, except I cannot get them in the right spot, I have no idea what the code is to use to have an image be at the top, middle, or bottom of the page. If it's easy enough to just give me the three codes, just put them in my talk page and I'll see if I can make it, but if it's more complicated or something, could you code it so it looks right? As I said, all the images I uploaded are on my Sandbox. Thanks a lot, Coocooforcocopuffs 00:45, 13 January 2007 (UTC).
I think it would work good to position the images, I'm not completely sure what to do. Coocooforcocopuffs 01:02, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
I uploaded the whole image with no links or anything, and that is at the bottom of my sandbox page, and I'm a little confused on what is supposed to happen now. Coocooforcocopuffs 03:29, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
Alright, thanks a lotCoocooforcocopuffs 03:31, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
The code seems like it would work, except on the whole image when you roll over it with the mouse it goes to the text symbol(when typing the "double sided T") , and the link won't work. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the internet browser, but thats what I'm thinking what is wrong.
I figured it out, I just had to make it again so the text wasn't in the middle. The image works now, all I need is to link the pictures to the right pages, but I can't seem to do it. Do you know what to add to it for linking pictures to a different page? Thanks, Coocooforcocopuffs 05:42, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
Re: Request for deleted articles
Thank you, and yes, I can meet all of those requirements. My site is another Wikia Wiki, so it will be easier to link back here, and license the text. --MasterA113 00:45, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- The Wiki is still in the request phase, but it's going to be called MemeWiki. If you'd prefer, I can wait until it's approved before you let me have the articles. --MasterA113 00:59, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- May I at least see the NEDM article? I agree with you about Brian Peppers, and my site is simply going to explain who he is, and how he became popular on the internet. But, I am curious about NEDM, and would like to see the serious article if it's not too much trouble. --MasterA113 02:20, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- It's all set my friend. Thanks a ton. --MasterA113 03:19, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

No need to remove original text in copyright dispute, IMO
Hi Prodego. Thanks for your help with the John Gorenfeld article. However the text that you removed was not the same as the disputed text. It was a completely new article which had been written to replace it. There is also a dispute going out asking that the whole article be deleted. If there is no text for people to read it would be hard for them to know how to vote on this other thing. Thanks. Keep up the good work. Steve Dufour 05:17, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
Rules for resolution of alleged copyright infringement
I'm not overly concerned about the article in question (John Gorenfeld), but I'm quite curious about what you seem to be saying is a Wikipedia policy that makes absolutely no sense to me. I'm what might be called a "sophomore" on Wikipedia, not "experienced" yet but a little bolder than as a newcomer, so more likely to make mistakes, yet people think it's okay to bite me now since I'm no longer a newcomer. (I actually think this is a problem on Wikipedia; I almost quit as a result.) Anyway, you said the copyvio notice has to stay on the article for 7 days. Hypothetically, if a notice was placed just to hassle someone, or, alternatively - as seems to be the case with John Gorenfeld - a questionable allegation was rendered completly baseless by making a few changes the first day, how could anyone think that something constructive is to be gained by requiring a copyvio notice to remain in place for 7 days? I really am just curious about what seems to be a ridiculous rule, while most Wikipedia policies and guidelines seem to have been thoroughly discussed with very reasonable end results. If you'd like to point me to the rationale, or comment here (I'm "watching" the page for now) or on the Talk:John Gorenfeld page, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. -Exucmember 06:58, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

repeated approvals (VP)
Looking at this page I'm surprised that several times it seems I'm approving the same user multiple times. But there's only one welcome message (and I only Update List after welcoming) for the users. What makes it even stranger is that the times are so spread out. Do you know what's going on? --frothT 20:09, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, most of the time I just open VP, add the users with more than 250, notify, hit Done in that window, Update list, Close, then exit VP. --frothT 20:16, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks; unfortunately popups no longer work! --frothT 22:28, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- Nope :( --frothT 22:41, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- Well when I revert your changes popups work, then I put your changes back and popups no longer work --frothT 22:58, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- Oh never mind they work now o_O --frothT 22:59, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm interested in all three, but since I know how to edit the text, and I am no where near administrator ship, can you explain to me how fighting vandalism works within the wikipedia community (the task force, etc.) THanks!
Will do. Also, I have a lot of photos that I think could be a useful addition to Wikipedia. SHould I add them directly to Wikipedia or to Wikimedia Commons?
Sorry for the late reply, I've been on vacation. All the photos I want to upload are photos I have taken. Would I have to be concernec with fair use when uploading these?
Some are of natural things like mountains, national parks, etc. Others are pictures of cars and other random things I have come across in my travels.
Sorry its been a while ive been busy with work. Ill get on those photos when things slow down.
Thanks for all the help you gave me today

i. I unblocked this IP. It really was a Foundation staff member. Danny 19:59, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- I thought you all might like to know that Seand59, who edited the Free Republic article a few hours ago (and was immediately blocked indefinitely for impersonating a Wikimedia staff member), is now known as Carolyn-WMF. Her account has been unblocked by Danny. She really does work for the Wikimedia Foundation.
- The article at AmericanPolitics.com that was allegedly written by TJ Walker does not exist. Click on the link you provided. It's a blank page. I believe that Wikipedia has been the victims of a carefully crafted hoax. I contacted TJ Walker and asked him whether he authored the article. He said, "Of course not." He contacted AmericanPolitics.com and asked them to remove the article from their website. They complied immediately. Dino 21:28, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

VandalProof
We need to be more careful with the approvals of VP. Recently there have been a number of users that were approved who should not have been. I appears that as long as the user has +250 edits you approve. while that is one factor in approving there are others and Im not sure that your looking into them. I do not mean to insult you but I would like to take over the VP approvals completely for a while to ensure that there are no errors in approving. If you would Like I can go over the details of what to look into besides the edit count if you wish. Betacommand (talk • contribs • Bot) 19:27, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
- If you dont mind Id like to take over the approvals since there have been concerns by several people about the recent approvals. Cheers Betacommand (talk • contribs • Bot) 17:44, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry about taking so long to get back but Im done hogging the VP mod task and just a reminder please be careful who we approve as one of our approvals went rouge shortly after approval and after I removed there access they turned vandal. Hope we avoid any more like that. Cheers Betacommand (talk • contribs • Bot) 16:21, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for the message you left on my user page. It was quite helpful, and I greatly appreciate your time and effort. I feel comfortable with the present situation, and the solutions which were promptly executed seem quite satisfactory. (If I change my mind, I will contact the named parties.) It is a pleasure not only to be able to contribute to Wikipedia Articles, but to know that help is there when needed! Although I lack the technical expertise to solve some problems (for myself, let alone for others) I enjoy contributing more than my musical knowledge, by correcting faulty spelling and grammar, awkward wordings, etc. Thanks again! Is this edit OK?
Hi, Prodego! After reviewing your comments on my User Page, I realized you provided a link which could lead to private information, through a means with which most Users are unfamiliar. I therefore edited out the link. I hope you don't mind! (Of course, there are still means by which any User could locate private information, but removing this link seems to reduce the likelihood of such.)
As a general rule, is it OK for a User to edit his own User/Talk pages? (In such cases as this, or abusive/insulting messages?) I'd really like to clear my User/Talk pages of crap!)
Please don't be explosive! I'm still learning! THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP! Prof.rick 07:39, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

I think we might have another User:BryanFromPalatine sock
His first edit was to Bryan's user page. User:The_Friendly_Ghost removed the edit of some IP troll who posted a link to Bryan's phone book entry. No quarrel with the edit at all, as that needed to be removed, but isn't that a funny place to edit for your very first edit to Wikipedia? And a funny place to be looking if you were not involved? How should I proceed with this? Should I ask for a Checkuser? Or just let him be? --BenBurch 03:52, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- He's editing WW-II topics as Bryan did under his ClemsonTiger sock. And look at the wording of the protest he put on his user page when I marked it as a suspected sock. This is Bryan, I am almost sure of it. --BenBurch 05:50, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

vadalism
Hi,
I just wondered if there is a way for me and another user to stop vandalism on our article instead of deleting, we have an article called the crims which is about an online game of which we are moderators and have been assigned to stop anymore vandalism to the article as we have had recent problems which have been sorted, i have heard of something called vandal proof i would like to know if that helps stop the vandalism to articles and if so would it be possible for me and 1 other user to get it??
Regards,

Hi Prodego,
I have to ask you to check this user, WikiMan53, and his edits regarding VP: [2] - removing one user from the VP Approval list and [3] - telling the user that the his VP application was rejected, by using the same message that you VP Moderators use.
Even I, sometimes, tell peoples that their VP request will be likely rejected, but as you can see here, I clearly state that I'm not a moderator and so on. This user doesn't do the same ;-)
So, can you check the whole affair?

VP approvals
Hi Prodego, I notice you're a mod for VandalProof and that you seem to be active at the moment. I just wondered if you might consider taking a look at the Awaiting Approval section - there's a few people on it now and I've been there since yesterday. I've already been approved once but I seem to have been among the casualties of the move to the 1.31 userlist. helping on WP:OP
Hey,
I use a port scanner and a proxy scanner to check the IP's (in addition to using open proxy lists through the links you can click on at WP:OP like CBL). I'm not using particularly good scanners, just the first ones I've found (I hadn't used this stuff in a while before testing those 3 proxies yesterday) so if you have any tools to use that would be appreciated. That is, if you guys want me to help out. Yonatanh 06:39, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- TBH, I don't know too much about the specifics. I know they usually run on port 1080 and that there's socks4 and socks5. If there's more to know I'd be happy if you could direct me towards some information on the subject. Yonatan (contribs/talk) 14:59, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- As I said before, prior to offering to help out, I hadn't touched these sort of tools in quite a while. I remembered a port scanner I used to use called nscan which is what I'm using right now and as a proxy scanner I'm using some program I found through google called ProxyChecker. VandalProof
May I ask as to the reason you have declined my request for VP? I can't help but wonder if it is personal because you have in the past disagreed with my views. Is there anyone else I can contact about this? -- EnglishEfternamn talkcontribs 19:31, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- I have been keeping an eye on this user at the request of another admin, and I think giving this user this tool at this time, given the history of somewhat tendentious editing and inability to take feedback gracefully, would not be prudent and I support this decision, not that it matters in the scheme of things. ++Lar: t/c 12:17, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
Your template list on your vandalism page is out of date
Are you planing to update your vandalism page with the latest templates from WP:UWT? Will (Talk - contribs) 20:56, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- Ok. I suspect thought that the old templates will be deleted. Personally, the new ones take longer to type, but have much better text and are more consistent in names and structure. Will (Talk - contribs) 21:27, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I am getting a "you are not on the user list" error while trying to use vandalproof. Am I doing anything wrong? --Dexter prog 22:17, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
Images in MediaWiki space.
Regarding this change, please be sure we have a local copy with full protection of all images placed on MediaWiki pages, without that measure in place, one vandal could have serious affects. I've uploaded a local copy and fully protected Image:Information.svg. Thank you, — xaosflux Talk 03:45, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
You can find some of the background here. My friend from Boston can't vandalize his preferred target, Prussian Blue (duo), so he takes out his frustration elsewhere. He's started posting random gibberish to my talk page. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 04:08, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
Deletion decisions
You helped out with the John Gorenfeld article, and I want to ask a quesion of an experienced Wikipedia editor. I'm the self-described "sophomore" above (not a newcomer but inexperienced in most Wikipedia affairs). I'm not attached to the page in question - mostly I want to understand how Wikipedia works (or fails to). The AfD page states at the top, in bold: This is not a vote. In the only other AfD I've seen, the opinions were some deletes and mostly keeps, and the administrator said there was not consensus but in such cases we usually keep. I couldn't find any such rationale for John Gorenfeld. I'm guessing the administrator just added up the (non-)votes, which I counted after it ended but don't remember now (4 to 7? 4 to 9?). Anyway, there was no consensus. Also, the last two deletes said they would have (non-)voted to keep but because the subject of the article (non-)voted to delete, they (non-)voted to delete. But it was very clear that the subject of the article was a new user on Wikipedia who thought that Steve Dufour was using the article to attack him, when the edit history made it perfectly clear that the attack phrase was vandalism (which the subject subsequently admitted). Also, the copyvio issue, if it ever was a real concern, was no longer an issue by the middle of the AfD. So how can it be that (non-)votes are just counted up and a decision made in spite of the fact that there was not consensus - and without taking into account the mistake made by a key paarticipant and its impact on the (non-)votes? I wonder if the administrator even read the whole discussion and checked out the mistake. I don't see how the decision could be delete under the circumstances. When the (non-)vote is split, isn't there a tendency to make no major change, as was stated in the other AfD I saw? Is there any appeals process? -Exucmember 04:15, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Cascading
Ah, I see what you mean. Thanks, I'm not too quick on technical stuff :) Teke (talk) 03:13, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
If this actually comes into wide use as a deleted page system, it may not be a bad idea to add something to Mediawiki:Common.js, that would block out the list of pages protected at the bottom of these lists to anons (or perhaps non autoconfirmeds), so not to give ideas. It is possible to do it now, but it depends on how such a system is organized. One big page? Also, what does this system do in terms of server load? Prodego talk 02:56, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- 1. What sort of WP:BEANS invocation do you see this as? In the absence of a unified theme, each list would contain individual explanations of why the pages have been salted (for the benefit of all users). As anonymous and non-autoconfirmed users cannot create non-talk pages, I don't see why they would pose a special threat.
- 2. The idea is to divide these pages by month (and occasionally by theme, as demonstrated in the Colbert example).
- 3. Given that the deleted pages are nonexistent (which offsets the addition of cascading protection), the amount of server load should be roughly the same as (or possibly less than) the amount generated by standard transclusions. (In other words, there should be no significant impact.) —David Levy 03:19, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- When organized by topic like this, it gives ideas for misspellings (perhaps to someone who didn't think of that). It also clutters the page, which the cascade message says to come for more information. But pretty much I just want to mess with the js files ;-). Prodego talk 03:23, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- I sort of understand what you're saying, but how would anonymous and non-autoconfirmed editors use these ideas?
- In any case, feel free to experiment with the JavaScript files; this falls outside my area of knowledge. :-) —David Levy 03:30, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

help?
Can you help me create a coloured box, then put my normal text underneath it? Slaterj 18:48, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- That was quick - I'm asking for it in general practice e.g. a generic thing that'll stretch to fit text. I just want to know how to get regular text - like this underneath it! thx - Slaterj 18:53, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- let's say 5087D3 I would like it to go across fully, stretching down if text fills it! Slaterj 18:58, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, so I just need to know where the text goes in the script; if you have the box with writing in, whenever i do it i can't put anything after it. I just need to know how to create it, put the text in (and where) and then type after it . Thanks Slaterj 19:13, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
