After the events of the first film, Buster Moon now holds a brand new show starring Meena, Gunter, Rosita and Johnny. During the show, Buster observes a talent scout named Suki in the audience, who leaves before the second act. Buster is told that he and his cast are not good enough and would never make it in Redshore City, where stars are made. Dejected, Buster returns to the theater and is encouraged by Nana Noodleman to follow his dreams. After getting Ash, who has been working as a singer at a club, the gang heads to Redshore City and sneaks in through the employee entrance for an audition with Jimmy Crystal. Crystal is uninterested in Buster's show and sends them away, until he overhears Gunter talking about his idea for an outer space show featuring Clay Calloway, a rock star who hasn't been seen in 15 years. Intrigued, Crystal tells them to have the show up and running within three weeks, granting them everything they need.
Gunter and Buster write a show entitled "Out of This World", which will star Rosita, and present it to the crew that Crystal has given them the next day. Miss Crawley visits Clay Calloway, only to be scared away before she has the chance to speak to him. Meanwhile, Rosita develops a fear of heights during rehearsal and cannot jump off the high rise, prompting Crystal's daughter Porsche to take a shot. Crystal is thrilled at the prospect of having his own daughter be the star of the show and Buster has no choice but to find Rosita another part.
Meanwhile, Johnny has been assigned to work with top choreographer Klaus Kickenklober for his part in the show as a dance battle warrior, but feels that Klaus hates everything he does. Johnny comes across a street dancer named Nooshy, who agrees to help him out. Meena has been cast in a romantic scene with hot-shot Darius, a self-absorbed model/actor/singer who can't get her name right. Meena then meets an ice cream vendor, whom she immediately falls for after having no chemistry with Darius.
Ash, being a big fan of Calloway's, accompanies Buster to his residence, where they are knocked unconscious by Calloway's electric fence. Upon awakening, Calloway says no to being in their show. Buster returns to the theater, but Ash hangs back to speak with Calloway, and eventually convinces him to change his mind. After seeing that Porsche can't act, Buster asks if she would like to switch roles with Rosita, who has now been cast as a minor character. This causes Porsche to become upset and think that Buster has fired her. After learning about this, Crystal calls Buster to his office and dangles him off the roof, only to be called away to a TV interview. Crystal locks Buster in the closet, promising to come back and finish the job.
Suki frees Buster and warns him to get out of Redshore City before Crystal can kill him. Ash arrives with Calloway, who advises Buster and the cast not to run and hide like he did after he lost his wife. Buster then decides to have the cast and crew put on the show that night under Crystal's nose, and Porsche is asked to be in it as well. After distracting hotel security, Buster addresses the hotel's patrons in the lobby and promises them a great show with the return of Clay Calloway.
It is not long after the show begins that Crystal finds out, but he and his security team are stopped by Johnny's dad and his gang. During Johnny's number, Klaus takes the place of his original performance partner and tries to undermine Johnny's performance, but with encouragement from Nooshy, Johnny is able to beat Klaus, earning his respect. During Meena and Darius's performance, she is able to visualize that Darius is her ice cream vendor crush and performs a romantic duet with him. Afterwards, Meena learns that the ice cream vendor's name is Alfonso and she asks him to hang out after the show.
Crystal manages to sneak backstage during Porsche's number. He demands for her to get off the stage, but she refuses. Crystal then grabs Buster and takes him up to the top of the set, dropping him over the edge of the balcony. Seeing Buster fall causes Rosita to get over her fear of heights and she makes the dive to save his life. When the time comes for Clay Calloway to take the stage, he claims that he is not ready. Ash leads the crowd in a rendition of one of Calloway's song, giving him the courage to perform to a huge ovation. After the show ends, the gang, now including Calloway, Porsche, and Nooshy, immediately leave to go back home as Crystal is arrested for his crimes. Before the gang can leave Redshore City they are stopped by Suki, who tells them that a major theater wants to put on their show. As the gang puts on their first performance, Buster watches from the VIP section with Nana, Suki, and Alfonso, finally achieving his dream of making the big time. [4]
